  • Roger was right, as always. Kenny's drums were flat and he could not light up the band.

  • let there be rock...!!!!

  • Death before Disco

  • So good!!!

  • Its a tuner

  • is anybody here who could tell what kind of unit is to be seen at the end of the song, when John Entwistle seems to be not really satisfied with his sound? it´s a black box with a flashing display in it.Maybe a guitartuner? I´ve seen this unit in so many concert videos.

    Thanks for help

  • I generally don't care for Kenney's drumming (in the context of The Who) but this performance was freaking awesome. One of the few songs where I actually prefer KJ over Moonie's version.

  • @sbamkmfdmdfmk Cool story, douche.

  • I love this song. But yeah, I think the death of Keith Moon really killed the Who. Pete said in an interview that even though they did two more albums, and a few more tours, it was just never the same, and that was ultimately why the band broke up. Too bad. These guys are my all time favorite band, and this is one of their best songs, along with Won't Get Fooled Again, Amazing Journey, Who are You, and Baba O'Riley. Oh yeah, Guitar and Pen (also from Who are You album) is pretty good.

  • The Who lost a dimension when they lost Moonie.

So they're just a great band here, but not the total buzz they were in their prime. Love the candid chat at the end of the clip.

  • You rock!!! 2:28

  • angry Pete with a beard is always good.

  • kenny jones tells a great story of keith coming through the wall of their hotel rooms just to say hello.

  • kenny jones and keith moon were good friends so I don't think it was easy for him he was replacing one of his good friends.

  • Roger I love you!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "A" string.

  • Great performance! I love how Pete's persistent and over-eager harmonies crack both he and Roger up, lol

  • Great performance! I love when Pete's persistant & perhaps over-eager harmonies crack both he and Roger up in the beginning, lol

  • Kenny passes!Sounded fine.Looks like a funtime.

  • Moon played loose and had a cascading, ebbing and flowing dynamic style of playing and kenny jones is just too tight in his playing, moon magnified the sound of the band and jones minimizes it, like a polar opposite.

  • Oh. I have KNOWN AND LOVED The Who for so long....I don't think any one of us could EVER fathom what it would be like for Kenney Jones to come in and "do"...yet, he DID, and we gotta respect that.

  • i believ kenneys grossly underated i dont why he hang about taking abuse from daltrey they should of got sumbody else instead kenneys drummings great he was not trying to replace a fucking drunkhead soz mr moon but its a fact

  • Im sorry Kieth was the one and only no replacing him at all

  • Not to be disagreeable or troll for some online debate, but its my belief that Kenny Jones' style did not complement the Who's music. Its nothing to do with his ability, but with his style. Listen to opening of Baba O'Reilly on Who's Last. It sounds like their playing along with a drum machine, it just takes the energy out of the song. Now take Zak Starkey, his style definitely compliments the music of The Who. After having said all that, thanks the video tho.

  • @717mienbao I agree. I like Kenney a lot, but his drumming style does not fit the Who's classic material. Of course, after Keith died, the Who just wasn't the Who, regardless of what drummer took to the drums. I like the post-Keith stuff with Kenney on drums, Face Dances and It's Hard. Maybe Kenney's style suited Pete's writing at this point, which was, of course, different than the 60s-70s Moon stuff. But when Kenney plays stuff that Moonie played, it just doesn't fit.

  • @JohnnyCxviii Thanks for understanding. I hear ya. The Who songs recorded with Kenny are great in their own right and fit the music. But when one hears the music pre-Kenny played by Kenny, it just really falls flat.

  • good also be a rehearsel for the 1979 tour

  • 0:08 ¿kenny jones? this song, sister disco, was recorded with keith moon as a drumer

  • @rollingstone80 this was kenney jones' audition for drummer

  • Many fans seem to be down on him, but Kenney Jones kicks butt in this performance. Even during a rehearsal like this, The Who still sound dynamic and powerful. This is great footage.

  • good replacement drummer

  • I will choose nightmares and cold stormy seas, I will take over your grief and disease, I'll stay beside you and comfort your soul, when you are lonely broken and old.....

  • what's that piece of equipment they're talking about at 4:32?

    no H pin? WTF?

  • @cciemail He can't use the '8 string' with it!

  • @garethnh I thought he said "A" string, like on a guitar or bass.

  • @cciemail I thought he said "A" string, but I don't know what that box is. Maybe it's part of the recording equipment. It's hard to understand what the Ox is saying anytime he talks.

  • @HumGuitar No, he says 'I can't use the 8 string with it' and Bob Pridden repeats it. The box is only putting out a low input and that's why the 8 string won't work. Also look what John is holding.......

  • @garethnh Ahh, didn't notice the 8 string bass, my mistake.

  • that's gold

  • I am old enough to remember this all in real time, and it was important to us as young Who fans back then. Most of us hated Kenny Jones. Daltry did too, and this was well known. Now that I'm older, I realize that he was a competent and skilled drummer who took his new job seriously and always brought it. We all just expected too much from him. RIP Keith Moon.

  • I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that bit at the end.

  • DAMN, PETE'S SOOO HOT!!!!!

  • pity the who will never tour again though

  • great vid!!! thx for sharing

  • It's a shame you can't hear Jon's thundering bass groove.

  • Pete at 1:16 -1:37 just melts my heart!! I still can't shake my high school crush on him. It's really weird!!! I should be able to shake it by now! I even used to draw pictures of him! My friends all loved Roger, but I always go for the super smart and sensitive ones. :)

  • @PeteTownshendFanatic I dont like what your saying because i feel the same exact way haha but i have to agree! There are no words to describe what i feel when he sings and plays because its something he loves doing and hes just so damn good at it:) You choose wisely my friend:)

  • @ptownshendlove19 I subscribed to your channel the second I saw it!! Looks like you're REALLY into everything Pete!! Awesome! I'd create a page like that if I was tech saavy enough. Don't need to though as there's you and probably others out there doing a great job of it. Thanks for confirming I'm not crazy for being crazy about Pete. You have very good taste.

  • Kenney is the drummer they needed at that time, IMO.

I've always liked how cool John looks at 0:48

Also, that part where John can't get the 4008 Rickey (prototype 8 stringer, Squire has the other prototype) working, it sound like it's right out of Spinal Tap 4:30 the roadie looks so bored

"The harmonies.....on the record are shit hot" 4:58

  • It sure doesn't SOUND like he couldn't get it work. I love that line about how the roadie has to get John's attention, then he says "Why didn't you like this one?", "Couldn't use the 8 string". But you never get a clear explanation of WHY he couldn't use the 8 string. And I love that roadie's voice..."Is it the input sensitivity?". I've always wondered why he has the Rick there when he already his Alembic 8 string by this time.

  • Roger is so strong here. The harmonies between him and Pete are very good too.

  • Its even more amazing that a drum set as intense if not more than keiths, but you can call him John

  • This is from the 30 Years Max R & B DVD. Sounds a little sped up, but this as well as other c;ips from this set show the transition period right after Moonie's death. Like it or not, this was a pivitol chapter of the band's great history. I love watching these clips. Great insight to the boys finding their way in a changing musical era.

  • Thanks to KJ's great drumming,The Who

were able to carry own sucessfully after

    Moon's death!

    Jman

  • Yeah!!!!

  • the new drummer never replaced the legend that was keith moon

  • This was early footage of Rabbit and Kenney Jones.I believe it was to be another documentary believed to be titled "Who Are You" but it was scrapped. The Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Number 5 Peter is playing is located in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame for anyone who interested. Gotta love Bobby Pridden!

  • Ya know, I've always wondered about this footage. On the 30 Years Of Maximum R&B DVD, it's referred to as an excerpt from Who Are You, but when I asked about it online, if there was more footage, people didn't seem to understand what I was asking about guy seemed to think I was talking about the clip of Who Are You that's in The Kids Are Alright. So what's in 30 Years Of Maximum R&B is all that's been seen by the public, then?

  • isnt this wear they filmed the video for you better you bet?

  • nice gibson les paul

  • you know benoit david is living the sister disceaux dream. i hear drummers unable to rattle of the way that Moonpie and Mona Lisa went as rote. WHO DAT

  • disco rivals

  • watching any of the guys (even if the ox only stands still) is hypnotizing because they're all so good at their instruments and they make it seem so effortless.

kenney jones is alright in this vid but in some other who concerts he is right boring...

  • Yes THE WHO is the best band ever

    This ong is good

  • God bless Bob Pridden.

  • Whom Roger Daltrey describes as the guy who always got the tape machine thrown at him, especially when it didn't work.

  • One of my favorite who songs that never got really big, i think they need to bring this back they did on thier 2008 tour but i think it needs to be a perminent song on thier setlist.

  • Proof, that the Who are the best rock band ever!!! I would give my right arm if I could have been a fly on that wall.

  • oh yeah

  • lol just to find out that flies are deaf

  • this has to be one of there best song, look at the intensity

  • Vintage

  • go away disco......

  • I really thinck they 're kiddin' :-)

  • Great post. The band is tight! Love the bit at the end.

  • Jones gave a lot of these songs a cool, fresh groove. This is a great example.

  • Fabulous song.

  • Confirmation that The Who were the Guvnors.

  • Kenney played on the Tommy soundtrack album so it wasn't exactly untried territory with him. Kenney was also very good friends with Keith from the days of the Small Faces.

  • From a 1979 Documentry that has never been release with the exception of this one, Who are you , and dialogue featuring Pete talking about Rabbit. From 30 yrs video.

  • Wow! Fantastic! Long time fan and never seen this, thanke for the upload!

  • Promo video?

  • Nope, just an audition video from a documentary 30 Years of Maximum R&B, I believe.

  • @CallMeLightning905 it is lol good dvd.... haha pete HATES this song.. bt as u can see daltrey loves this song.. vocals are intence in this song

  • @CallMeLightning905 yes, one of the first Kenney Jones and Rabbit auditions

  • Nice upload, i used to have this vid 20 yrs ago but god knows what happened to it

  • Kenny is great but when you have an old dog teach the young dog the tricks you've really got something

  • Without keithmoon is so hard

  • my god dwhat a recording session, rock on :3

  • this was gone..now ITSS BACKKKK!!

  • i like the extra riff bend he thows in at 1:40 when hes just strumming.

  • The song is so important to music. Love Live Rock! Good bye Disco! Some one today needs to bring this song back for today, but change the words to Goodbye Rap! And good bye empty modern pop! Hello Rock ! Long Live Rock! LONG LIVE WHO!

  • YES and once again YES good bye to the loud meaningless stuff that we are fed on FM radio today......I can only say we are fortunate to have YOUTUBE to remind us of pop music's former identity

  • snortlaughs

  • great upload

  • Kenny did a great LP with Paul Rodgers. The Law!

  • could it be the fact that he took the place of an unreplaceable drummer?

  • Comment removed

  • Don't Hate Kenney. The Small Faces were fantastic.

Imagine the weight on his shoulders he felt drumming in Moonies shadow.

I didn't like it either, but the 3 remaining members wanted to keep playing & stay together.

I am tipping a lot of drummers would have turned down the gig when asked, kenney didn't.

At least the music stayed alive....

  • because it was his first rehearsal as a new memeber of The Who

  • kenny is an awesome drummer, check his small faces solo.

  • you're a fool hes a great drummer, he just didn't work as well with the who as Zak does

  • Go away and watch some of the Faces clips

  • Would you be wooden when it's your first rehersal with THE WHO.

  • no not really i have been a who fan for over 20 years so i know the music inside out & keith moon was a bass drum led drummer where as kenney jones is an old school pop drummer.

  • i doesn't matter if you know the music inside and out, if it's your first rehearsal with THE WHO you're going to be nervous. I'm sure Kenney Jones knew what he was doing.

  • I know it's the moment of the who i his greatest prime which made them demi gods, but comming from another great band, even it was not as famous, I guess the approach must have been more like coleagues looking for chemistry than the shaken young kid in an important audition. Anyway, I know there must a little bit of that also... Take care, God bless...

  • Kenny is goos, but keith is the best.

  • hasnt got a bad cv has kenney jones.couldnt have been that bad.made a lot of money out of music.maybe yous dont as much about music as you think yous do

  • Great version even with Jones on the drums.

  • I never understood the sound of jones. I mean, ok, you are a clean and a bit methodic drummer, but why the plain sound? In the '82 tour it got even worst. Nobody ever noticed? So plain, it sounds like he has no microphones sometimes!

  • where is Keith Moon?

  • where do you think :(

  • six feet under......

  • agreed rabbit has been there for such a long time. i had no idea he wasn't recognized officially. we love you rabbit. R.I.P. moony and john

  • Incredible to think that Rabbit Bundrick has yet to be recognised as an official member of this band. Agreed, he's been in and out of the band but he should now be appreciated for his loyalty to The Who, if not then he's the longest serving "session musician" in existence; because what else can he be if he isn't recognised as a full time member?

  • At the end, Johns like....Huh?

  • the band is the best both very bad thing that the drummer and bass die but still today we remember them as gods os music as jimmy hendrix

  • and you do???

  • Lame response - Daltrey and Entwistle conceded as much after Jones dismissal - not sure about Townshend though.

  • pete sounds so awesome in this video, must have been a good day :) and kenny sounds ok too.

  • I loooove Pete's voice!

  • I liked Kenny Jones for The Who. He was a good drummer. The guy had to step into Keith Moons shoes. No one can do that seamlessly...They continued producing great new music with him. I think they chose wisely :)

  • @ThePipersNicks

yea it wasn't a bad choice.

i like them today with ringo's son. he's ridiculous but i think it was because he was taught by "uncle" keith (moon) as a kid.

  • @ThePipersNicks he was a solid drummer, but lacked any pizzazz!

  • great song,thanks,have a nice evening

  • The biggest problem with Kenny Jones is that every roll he does is just a ratta-tat-tat on the snare.

After Moon figuratively exploded, I'm sure Pete and co. were looking for a more dependable drummer. Unfortunately, dependable in Kenny Jones' case translates to predictable.

  • I think they went with Kenney because he was a friend of Keith's and a friend of the band. I think they were more looking for someone they knew they could deal with being around, versus some "outsider". They probably also wanted some different than Keith, rather than simply get a clone who was always gonna remind him that Keith was gone (ironically, I guess you could say Kenney did just that for the fans, at least).

  • That rates right up there with the cars in swimming pools and hotel foyers!

  • This is true, about Kenney Jones, he was much more 'conventional' han Keith, but Moonie's strength wasn't necessarily technical expertise either. Keith and the Who were integral to each other. Pete knew this and wanted to get away from the "Who" sound on Face Dances because he knew it wouldn't work without Moon. Jones plays differently on It's Hard, because on Face Dances he was so far from Moon that it didn't sound like the Who at all [except for on Quiet One, my favorite Face Dances track].

  • "What's the matter with this one" Why'd you change it?"

"Can't use the A string with it."

    I love John Entwistle.

  • Good song...!!!

  • i watched this clip so much on my old vhs that the tape automatically stopped at petes part when i would rewind. how absolutely gorgeous!

  • Boy...Kenny Jones. Good drummer, but soooo wrong for The Who.

  • It wasn't Kenny Jones' fault, but I totally agree. Roger Daltrey did not want him as Moon's replacement. He was right. I don't know who had the final say about choosing Jones, but it was the wrong choice, IMO.

They should have used a very young Simon Phillips who I believe was who Roger wanted in the band. If not in '79, for sure after Philips played on Townshend's solo album " Empty Glass"

  • How old is Rabbit in this? Like 12? lol!! Great song!!

  • He was born in '48, so about 31

  • Sorry to ask such a dumb question, but who is Rabbit? Is he the keyboard player? Thanks in advance.

  • Yes.

  • John "Rabbit" Bundrick, is the keyboard man. He's recorded on sessions with Eric Clapton and Free and many others prior to his gig backing The Who.

  • One of their best songs,so many.I go where the music fits my soul.
