is anybody here who could tell what kind of unit is to be seen at the end of the song, when John Entwistle seems to be not really satisfied with his sound? it´s a black box with a flashing display in it.Maybe a guitartuner? I´ve seen this unit in so many concert videos.
I generally don't care for Kenney's drumming (in the context of The Who) but this performance was freaking awesome. One of the few songs where I actually prefer KJ over Moonie's version.
I love this song. But yeah, I think the death of Keith Moon really killed the Who. Pete said in an interview that even though they did two more albums, and a few more tours, it was just never the same, and that was ultimately why the band broke up. Too bad. These guys are my all time favorite band, and this is one of their best songs, along with Won't Get Fooled Again, Amazing Journey, Who are You, and Baba O'Riley. Oh yeah, Guitar and Pen (also from Who are You album) is pretty good.
Moon played loose and had a cascading, ebbing and flowing dynamic style of playing and kenny jones is just too tight in his playing, moon magnified the sound of the band and jones minimizes it, like a polar opposite.
Oh. I have KNOWN AND LOVED The Who for so long....I don't think any one of us could EVER fathom what it would be like for Kenney Jones to come in and "do"...yet, he DID, and we gotta respect that.
i believ kenneys grossly underated i dont why he hang about taking abuse from daltrey they should of got sumbody else instead kenneys drummings great he was not trying to replace a fucking drunkhead soz mr moon but its a fact
Not to be disagreeable or troll for some online debate, but its my belief that Kenny Jones' style did not complement the Who's music. Its nothing to do with his ability, but with his style. Listen to opening of Baba O'Reilly on Who's Last. It sounds like their playing along with a drum machine, it just takes the energy out of the song. Now take Zak Starkey, his style definitely compliments the music of The Who. After having said all that, thanks the video tho.
@717mienbao I agree. I like Kenney a lot, but his drumming style does not fit the Who's classic material. Of course, after Keith died, the Who just wasn't the Who, regardless of what drummer took to the drums. I like the post-Keith stuff with Kenney on drums, Face Dances and It's Hard. Maybe Kenney's style suited Pete's writing at this point, which was, of course, different than the 60s-70s Moon stuff. But when Kenney plays stuff that Moonie played, it just doesn't fit.
@JohnnyCxviii Thanks for understanding. I hear ya. The Who songs recorded with Kenny are great in their own right and fit the music. But when one hears the music pre-Kenny played by Kenny, it just really falls flat.
Many fans seem to be down on him, but Kenney Jones kicks butt in this performance. Even during a rehearsal like this, The Who still sound dynamic and powerful. This is great footage.
I will choose nightmares and cold stormy seas, I will take over your grief and disease, I'll stay beside you and comfort your soul, when you are lonely broken and old.....
@cciemail I thought he said "A" string, but I don't know what that box is. Maybe it's part of the recording equipment. It's hard to understand what the Ox is saying anytime he talks.
@HumGuitar No, he says 'I can't use the 8 string with it' and Bob Pridden repeats it. The box is only putting out a low input and that's why the 8 string won't work. Also look what John is holding.......
I am old enough to remember this all in real time, and it was important to us as young Who fans back then. Most of us hated Kenny Jones. Daltry did too, and this was well known. Now that I'm older, I realize that he was a competent and skilled drummer who took his new job seriously and always brought it. We all just expected too much from him. RIP Keith Moon.
Pete at 1:16 -1:37 just melts my heart!! I still can't shake my high school crush on him. It's really weird!!! I should be able to shake it by now! I even used to draw pictures of him! My friends all loved Roger, but I always go for the super smart and sensitive ones. :)
@PeteTownshendFanatic I dont like what your saying because i feel the same exact way haha but i have to agree! There are no words to describe what i feel when he sings and plays because its something he loves doing and hes just so damn good at it:) You choose wisely my friend:)
@ptownshendlove19 I subscribed to your channel the second I saw it!! Looks like you're REALLY into everything Pete!! Awesome! I'd create a page like that if I was tech saavy enough. Don't need to though as there's you and probably others out there doing a great job of it. Thanks for confirming I'm not crazy for being crazy about Pete. You have very good taste.
Also, that part where John can't get the 4008 Rickey (prototype 8 stringer, Squire has the other prototype) working, it sound like it's right out of Spinal Tap 4:30 the roadie looks so bored
"The harmonies.....on the record are shit hot" 4:58
It sure doesn't SOUND like he couldn't get it work. I love that line about how the roadie has to get John's attention, then he says "Why didn't you like this one?", "Couldn't use the 8 string". But you never get a clear explanation of WHY he couldn't use the 8 string. And I love that roadie's voice..."Is it the input sensitivity?". I've always wondered why he has the Rick there when he already his Alembic 8 string by this time.
This is from the 30 Years Max R & B DVD. Sounds a little sped up, but this as well as other c;ips from this set show the transition period right after Moonie's death. Like it or not, this was a pivitol chapter of the band's great history. I love watching these clips. Great insight to the boys finding their way in a changing musical era.
This was early footage of Rabbit and Kenney Jones.I believe it was to be another documentary believed to be titled "Who Are You" but it was scrapped. The Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Number 5 Peter is playing is located in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame for anyone who interested. Gotta love Bobby Pridden!
Ya know, I've always wondered about this footage. On the 30 Years Of Maximum R&B DVD, it's referred to as an excerpt from Who Are You, but when I asked about it online, if there was more footage, people didn't seem to understand what I was asking about guy seemed to think I was talking about the clip of Who Are You that's in The Kids Are Alright. So what's in 30 Years Of Maximum R&B is all that's been seen by the public, then?

One of my favorite who songs that never got really big, i think they need to bring this back they did on thier 2008 tour but i think it needs to be a perminent song on thier setlist.
Kenney played on the Tommy soundtrack album so it wasn't exactly untried territory with him. Kenney was also very good friends with Keith from the days of the Small Faces.

YES and once again YES good bye to the loud meaningless stuff that we are fed on FM radio today......I can only say we are fortunate to have YOUTUBE to remind us of pop music's former identity

I know it's the moment of the who i his greatest prime which made them demi gods, but comming from another great band, even it was not as famous, I guess the approach must have been more like coleagues looking for chemistry than the shaken young kid in an important audition. Anyway, I know there must a little bit of that also... Take care, God bless...
hasnt got a bad cv has kenney jones.couldnt have been that bad.made a lot of money out of music.maybe yous dont as much about music as you think yous do
I never understood the sound of jones. I mean, ok, you are a clean and a bit methodic drummer, but why the plain sound? In the '82 tour it got even worst. Nobody ever noticed? So plain, it sounds like he has no microphones sometimes!
Incredible to think that Rabbit Bundrick has yet to be recognised as an official member of this band. Agreed, he's been in and out of the band but he should now be appreciated for his loyalty to The Who, if not then he's the longest serving "session musician" in existence; because what else can he be if he isn't recognised as a full time member?
I liked Kenny Jones for The Who. He was a good drummer. The guy had to step into Keith Moons shoes. No one can do that seamlessly...They continued producing great new music with him. I think they chose wisely :)
The biggest problem with Kenny Jones is that every roll he does is just a ratta-tat-tat on the snare.
After Moon figuratively exploded, I'm sure Pete and co. were looking for a more dependable drummer. Unfortunately, dependable in Kenny Jones' case translates to predictable.
I think they went with Kenney because he was a friend of Keith's and a friend of the band. I think they were more looking for someone they knew they could deal with being around, versus some "outsider". They probably also wanted some different than Keith, rather than simply get a clone who was always gonna remind him that Keith was gone (ironically, I guess you could say Kenney did just that for the fans, at least).
This is true, about Kenney Jones, he was much more 'conventional' han Keith, but Moonie's strength wasn't necessarily technical expertise either. Keith and the Who were integral to each other. Pete knew this and wanted to get away from the "Who" sound on Face Dances because he knew it wouldn't work without Moon. Jones plays differently on It's Hard, because on Face Dances he was so far from Moon that it didn't sound like the Who at all [except for on Quiet One, my favorite Face Dances track].
It wasn't Kenny Jones' fault, but I totally agree. Roger Daltrey did not want him as Moon's replacement. He was right. I don't know who had the final say about choosing Jones, but it was the wrong choice, IMO.
They should have used a very young Simon Phillips who I believe was who Roger wanted in the band. If not in '79, for sure after Philips played on Townshend's solo album " Empty Glass"
Roger was right, as always. Kenny's drums were flat and he could not light up the band.

Imagine the weight on his shoulders he felt drumming in Moonies shadow.

"What's the matter with this one" Why'd you change it?"
"Can't use the A string with it."
I love John Entwistle.

Boy...Kenny Jones. Good drummer, but soooo wrong for The Who.

Yes.

John "Rabbit" Bundrick, is the keyboard man. He's recorded on sessions with Eric Clapton and Free and many others prior to his gig backing The Who.
