We let all their products into the US even to the detriment of our own workers but the Chinese government prevents our companies from operating freely there. But forget the companies and balance of trade issues. How can the US have a relationship with a country that denies THE most basic freedom--freedom of speech? Friends of mine in China must use vpn software in order to use Facebook. They're afraid someone might say something truthful about Tibet, evidently. The US gov needs to step up here.

I as a Chinese has to agree with you: we have the right to access all kinds of websites. This constraint is a nightmare for all Chinese, especially in this Information Age. But about that Tibetan issue, I just want to say: "Kindness fight for truth but evil create 'truth'. Things can be judged too easily but never can be too complicated." My friend, learn the China and Tibet's history, Why some Tibetans left but most of them stayed? Do you know how Dalai Lama rules Tibet before he left?

The US should be the last country to criticize China for occupying Tibet -- Hawaii (once a sovereign nation) was annexed for strategic & economic reasons in a truly embarrassing episode in US history, for example. I am not acting as a representative of my country, though, when I criticize China for occupying Tibet. Hawaii should be a sovereign country just as Tibet should be. And the Chinese people should be able to create new political parties & vote for whomever they choose.

With the influx of people from the mainland to Hawaii, how likely would it be that the majority of people there would want independence? Same thing in Tibet with the influx of Han Chinese. I've heard many Chinese curse Tibetans for being "dirty and lazy." Truly amazing behavior! but always expected from conquerors toward the conquered. After the PLA took Tibet, they straight away began land reform, slaves were liberated. I like Chinese people and Tibetan people very much--that's why I hate to see them become more like us. Modernization is a curse. The "developed" world should not be the measure of all things. Look at how polluted China has become since they began this mad march toward modernization. Each time I go to China, it is more polluted than before. I fear for my health whenever I go there. I can't believe people actually have to breathe the air and drink the water there for long periods of time....

I used to buy a lot of Chinese food items exported to the US--not anymore because I'm afraid of what they might contain. I hope the Chinese people will insist upon clean air and water, and stop this crazy grab for money that most of them seem to be involved in. I would rather live a quiet, content existence in Sichuan or Yunnan with clean air and water than be a rich city dweller in Shanghai or Beijing any day.

Yeah, I accept this. Modernization has made us lost two most valuable things: evironment and traditions. Our government will surly pay for what they have done to the rivers, trees and atmosphere. Actually, I have great hope for the Chinese people--so far they've been too smart to be fooled by the Middle Eastern religions, like Christianity, Judaism and Islam; but instead greatly developed and nurtured Buddhism--a philosophical tradition that can easily be made compatible with science.

Some people pray in the morning, but we most of the time pray during holidays. Our family consecrate the Maitreya. We put some wines and food on the table. During winter, we add some cloths for her. My grandpa also pray, and he is a member of the CCP...
