Harper had no right to limit the right of any elected MP to participate in Government should they so choose.

I have only to point to the fact that the GG calls heself the DEFACTO Head of State. As the BLOC Party have already formed the opposition at one time , they have demonstrated they are a Defacto government in waiting if called upon.

Harper broke the unwritten rules of which our Democracey is based- all MP's are equal.

Thats a minor issue. Harper is overthrowing the govt by declaring that he has supremacy power, he wants to get rid of the governor general.

The problem of with that is rules dont play it his way. Governor General under Canadian constitution cannot be overthrown by any Prime Minister. GG represents that Queen and only the Queen has the jurisdiction to remove GG. However, GG has the power to remove PM.

If the coalition had backed down after Harper had removed the offending measures they would have had a good victory; and weaken Harper enough that the progressive wing of the CPC (me included) would have been able to turf him.

Harper should indeed step down. He has lost the confidence of the house and without that confidence he cannot effectively govern. The responsible thing to do would be to step down to avoid further political turmoil. The Governor General will then decide whether to have another election or allow the coalition government. Dissolving parliament and dragging this thing out for another 2 months is irresponsible. Either way Harper should step down, it is the only reasonable and responsible thing to do
