  • Am I the only one that actually likes this cover ? I think its awesome

  • Soundgarden covering this song is like Christian-Rock...makes no sense to me. Like shouting at the devil (isn't that what Satan would want?)...Soundgarden for when i am depressed, sympathize with pot-smokers and want to lay around wallowing in self-pity. Devo for when I want to Whip-It, or rejoice or be flippant about De-evolution. I suppose it is flattering that they did this cover, but just bizarre.

  • Give Soundgarden props. It can't be easy to lay down a lazy-sounding cover of Girl U Want. Very difficult to get this vibe actually. Even SG couldn't hold back in the refrain.

  • jesus this sounds like this.

  • I heard DEVO play this song live earlier tonight. They're what, in their 60s now? They had more energy than this.

  • Grunge Devo? Now that's funny!

  • music is an opinion, you dont have to like it. you dont need to bash it. fucking morons

  • I love Soundgarden but this is baaaddd..Leave the Nerdrock to the Gods of it.

  • DEVO even topped this alleged cover when they did the theme music for Tank Girl. This is just horrible!

  • She's "just A girl"? …. (giggles) … if you believe that's the case… you're ambling about in the wrong neck of the woods!

    (sad)

  • @bonzeblayk Huh?

  • @Badgerinthenight

… this is THE girl we're talking about here… THE GIRL.

That's the way the lyrics in the original go… THE girl. SHE'S - THE ONE -.

She infests your dreams with that sweet sweet voice and her siren song, that aroma of undefined love, OMG THIS IS - TRUE LOVE - !

Fortunately, I no longer obsess over this kind of thing?

(but am no less susceptible - hiya SG !-)

    PS: DEVO are genus ;-)

  • @bonzeblayk Lol dude I have absolutely no clue whether you are agreeing with me or not.. or even what you're trying to say in general.tbh.

  • @Badgerinthenight - you wouldn't want me to undermine my reputation as a largely unintelligible icon of Paleo-Goth mus-ethosography, now would you?

    ;-)

But nah, there's a big difference between A girl and THE girl. When you succumb to the allure of THE Girl-U-Want?

    NONE OTHER WILL DO!

But yah, in this I do agree with you: D-E-V-O do it better... though I also enjoy Soundgarden's interpretation of it!

  • Caffeine anyone?

  • Sounds like dudes who can barely play the instruments.

  • All DEVO covers are technically failures within themselves. To my knowledge every single "cover" DEVO did they made their own. If you're covering DEVO... DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT WITH IT! Especially here, cause this sounds like crap period.

  • @MrTrty5 check out the KROQ Devotees album. KROQ held a contest soliciting DEVO covers from listeners, and they put the best ten on an album. Some of them are extremely reworked; Jocko Homo as a circus anthem, and played on a touch-tone phone are my two favourites.

  • DEVO took your girl ..

  • I started looking for the tracking (speed) knob on my turntable then realized, oh wait...

  • Lay off the Valium, guys!

  • i highly recommend the freelance whales version

  • soundgarden ruined this song, hey soundgarden, dont cover any more devo songs please, you suck!

  • @mycuff2 Yeah, go listen to that faggy band now. I bet you will cause if you say Soundgarden sucks you must have a really bad taste. If you don't like this cover, that's one thing, but Soundgarden sucks? Go listen to Britney.

  • way too slow....

  • they shouldn't have covered this song

  • This covered isn't how I pictured it would sound. I would've thought he'd do his high screaming vocals for the chorus.

  • horrible. raped.

  • @gastonepenzo ffffffaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggg

  • Whoa, that was unexpected. Interesting... interesting, but slightly raped.

  • I love this cover it has a totally different sound than the original which really represents the popular music of soundgarden's time. It's great but even though I like this nothing can beat the original.

  • And like their grunge brethren Nirvana, not only did Soundgarden cover Devo, but they also covered The Beatles.

  • Yeah, 'Rusty Cage' was fantastic, but Johnny Cash also did an exceptonal cover of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus"...alot better than Manson's rendition, in my opinion. lol. But his cover of NIN's "Hurt" might as well be the greatest cover song of all time.

  • @doctorshifty83

That whole Johnny Cash album (Man Comes Around) is fucking awesome. I really love his version of "Hung my head" aswell (Sting Cover). As for "Girl U want" covers, my favourite is Zombie Ghost Train's version.

  • This is very cool. I prefer Devo's version... crisper feel suits it better. But this is still cool.

  • @supahz I agree. Too murky.

  • Where can I buy this song?!

  • I've never heard the original, but i love this.

  • god bless u cornell

  • this is so great! I love how they cover Devo and Black Sabbath, it just shows you how they embraced both Metal and alternative music.

  • DeVo coverd the Rolling Stones Satisfaction and made it their own.

  • chris cornell-core!

  • My dad grew up with Devo in Akron, and they came to my house to play with my uncles band in 73...I'm the biggest Soundgarden fan you'll find....and i'm a huge devo fan so i was so happy the first time i heard this, especially with the twist that soundgarden puts on it

  • I love this, first time hearing, but about good covers...check out Children of the Revolution by the Violent Femmes, instead of that T-Rex shit.

  • awesome cover.

  • Heavy... Metal... in a good way !

  • I like the cover but I was hope hoping for something up tempo and Chris using his incredible vocal range.

  • THEY'RE BAAAAAAACK!!!!!!!!!! ALL FOUR OF THEM!!! They're gonna perform on Conan Tuesday November 9, 2010. Can't WAIT!

  • If they kept the original up-beat tempo, it could've been much better. Soundgarden-wise, it's a good cover. :)

  • i think this is better than devo's version...its sexy.

  • @Carina08x i'd pick devo over soundgarden in terms of sexiness any day

  • I like Soundgarden but this song is too slow for my taste..

  • The reason why Soundgarden is so good is that they aren't just into music LIKE THE MUSIC THEY MAKE....I bet all these guys love Devo, B 52s Talking Heads "Hey Mickey"

  • damn way better than devos

  • @metalyouth666 lol i dont even know he they are xD

  • @tigerintermusic look up whip it on here by devo

  • @deluxereissue, I agree, the Devo version is terrible. I hate when bands do the exact same thing the original artist did.

  • cool

  • Great cover...and they did a good job staying true to the Devo Math.

  • This just goes to show what a big influence Devo has been to others.

  • I love the Garden, but this is just not one of their better songs. Devo really did it best the first time.

  • this is totally cool, and im not into s.g. at all

  • This is Rock/Pop Composer Robert Nix and I do say-great cover done in the soundgarden style.

  • Such an awesome song...I so miss the days when bands like the Garden were in...New music sucks so bad man...seriously...

  • @JonasC22 I feel ya brother. Gone are the days of waiting to see the new song from the new Nirvana album on a saturday on MTV. I miss the '90s :(

  • great song

  • I like it! : )

  • I've been meaning to listen to this for many years, finally here I am. This is one of the best Devo covers I've ever heard, something both Devo and Soundgarden can be proud of.

  • @Druffmaul Yeah for sure... I can't understand haters..... it's music and an art to be takin and put in any form the artist so desire's... you can like it or not

  • Even though Freedom of Choice was the huge hit album, I have always thought Duty Now for the Fututre was the best album and it would be nice to see more covers from that album.

  • Great song. I love it when bands cover songs that are completely unlike them!

  • Love the original, love THIS. It's obvious the band appreciates the song and that should be enough. It's cool that BOTH bands are playing dates this year after long periods away.

  • Pretty good cover, as a Devo fan I must say that this is a nice version the kind I would expect from Soundgarden. Speaking of great covers check out Devo - Satisfaction!!

  • just a girl

  • I think it does a lot. Being able to juxtapose the sludgey, male-centric rock formula over a song like this and have it rock pokes holes in both formulas, and it would be easy to have it fall flat by being insincere about it. Soundgarden, certainly helped along by Matt Cameron's odd-time wizardry, shows that the song was no fluke for DEVO, and gives it a new set of legs to walk around on, hopefully turning people onto it who might not otherwise be caught dead listening to DEVO. Perfect B-Side.

  • Comment removed

  • THIS IS AWFUL BUT NICE TO KNOW SOUNDGARDEN DIGS DEVO

  • This must sound GREAT on Horse.

But my Weed says this sucks.

  • Hands down the worst version of this song. Just awful.

  • @JohnnyLovelyOfficial agreed. Why the hell would you want to make devo depressing.

  • @JohnnyLovelyOfficial Your hands down the biggest dipshit on earth.

  • awesome cover

  • I feel that Devo's version is the perspective of the nerd, this is the perspective of the jock. Nerds FTW!!

  • I LOVE IT!! Very happy to hear about Soungarden getting back together!!!

  • One of the Best Covers IMO

  • I think the version that played in the Tank Girl opening credits is the best one, but regardless, this is still great.

  • It took me a little bit to adjust to it being played so thuddingly slow, but I kind of like this. In a way I think it's only appropriate that they tried to remodel it into a Soundgarden song, since any time Devo does a cover, they basically turn the source material into a Devo song (like their version of "Satisfaction" of course).

  • @quetzalcoatlustastic

    good point ... like it!

  • i love this song<33

  • i think its better than the original...i love it!! :D

  • Holy Sh*t. Great cover, great song TO cover. Awesome!

  • GREAT COVER. SHUT UP

  • you fux have no idea, Devo fkn rule it, Sepultura do another great cover version of Mongaloid - watch?v=pCQukZaoZXQ

  • Everyone after randomwordcombination are assholes that don't know jack about music

  • @ReRemixedLive New Wave is punk descended (albiet pop-py as fuck), and Devo is practically an electronic punk band.

  • Die asshole, it'd after a windchime type thingy

  • learn to type you fucking mong!

  • What??

  • Oops.

  • i don't like this cover, the original rulez!

  • this is bad.. reminds me of loud love days soundgarden as a child

  • only soundgarden can make devo badass

  • Nirvana did pretty good at Turnaround though. I love that '90s bands covered this stuff.

  • Good version! One of the rare cover that really works.

  • Devo re-recorded their own song for the "Tank Girl" soundtrack, and were told to use this as a reference point. They used the slowed down version...

  • This song is my FIRST intro to SoundGarden. I grew up in the '70s-'80s and am a big fan of Mark M. and the gang. I couldn't believe another band did a cover of this. I drove to the closest "record" store to find it. They were out of their EPCD (extended play compact disc), for those of you under 35!!

  • Was it Crow's Nest?

  • Yep! However, Crow's Nest doesn't exist anymore. It closed a number of years ago. AB Gusto's is still open, though. (that's a bar across the street!)

  • if it wasnt a cover and just a regular song, it would be pretty cool, it still is, it isnt a bad cover, but its not quite as good as it could have been

  • True, Dare To Be Stupid is the BEST Devo non-cover possible.

And the video! Weird Al totally gets it.

  • This reminds me of Zeppelins' "When the Levee Breaks." There's no point in comparing this with Devos' version. They're totally different. As it should be. Why rehash something? Only Weird Al could out-Devo Devo at their own game.(Dare to be Stupid) I like this but I like the way the original makes me wanna jump around.

  • Sounds like the moon's drowning.

    In the best possible way.

  • it would rock if motley did it...nice tho.

  • I prefer Devo's, but I like this version. The music of this version and Devo singing would be pro.

  • Darker and Heavier than the original version...seems like it was written to be played in this way...more effective...I like it...

  • imo they have totally given the song the full soundgarden makeover. but they have lost the poppy edge that make the song good. slowing it down with the sledge type feel just isnt doing the song justice . its still interesting to listen to, though definately not even close to the quality of the original!

  • this is pretty awesome

  • No.....I really have to say....I....don't like bashing people so I'll just say what I feel is right.

This version SUCKS. It's UBER suckage. It sucks so hard it's making a black hole of suckage. I mean.....my GOD is it horrible.

Devo version rules though. :p And I do like Soundgarden as a band.

  • @razer2002ro ok well stated and black hole and everything after sucks but this sounds better to me

  • zzzzzz...Mark where are you?

  • this is total crap...chris cornell rocks, but this is toatal poo-pooo

  • meh good cover sort of but stick to your own stuff boys ...note i didnt say it sucked but doesnt have the feel of the spuds version

  • It's not supposed to have the feel of the Devo version, dumbass. Hence why it's called a "cover."

  • @p9byrd Being a cover has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not it has the feel of the original. That's a choice the band doing the cover makes. A lot of bands that do covers try to keep to the heart of the original song.

This cover blows and the instrumental makes no sense in the context of the lyrics. This is just SoundGarden bastardizing the song.

  • @p9byrd same as cornell rapping down rodeo?? lol

  • Bongie Boy

  • This was a damn good cover !

  • I really don't get the people who don't get why Soundgarden did this song in this style. That's because it's Soundgarden you dweebs. If they tried to do it like Devo it would be god damn awful. A great cover is when a band does it in their own style. It was also just on a b-side, so they weren't trying to cash in on Devo's fame to try and get a hit.

This would be in my top 3 covers. Also like Sonic Youth's "Superstar" by the Carpenters & The Cure doing "Don't Believe a Word" by Thin Lizzy.

  • @DeluxeReissue

I guess they forget how different Devo's cover of the Stone's "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" was.

  • @BuckToff

Exactly dude. I heard a radio interview with the guys from Devo talking about when they played their cover of "Satisfaction" to Mick Jagger at his house to get his approval before releasing it. They described it as a typical Jagger moment - he started dancing round the room, yelling "I LOVE IT!" - in typical over the top Jagger style.

Oh yeah, another great cover was Johnny Cash's version of Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat". Cash's version of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" ruled too.

  • @DeluxeReissue Add Judas Priest's cover of Fleetwood Mac's Green Manalishi to that list of awesome covers!

  • @DeluxeReissue just because its in their own style it doesn't make it good, it just means they did it in their own style

  • @DeluxeReissue Spacemen 3's cover of Little Doll by the Stooges and Nirvana's cover of Love Buzz by Shocking Blue.

  • @DeluxeReissue You're right.... ,but this song is only a slow version! I think this is a bad cover....

  • Nah. I like the original too much.

  • It sounds a lot diferent from the original girl u want but its still a great song.

  • They mellowed it out I liked it, not as much as the real song but it was as close as you could get with your own twist.

  • Yet another reason to love these guys.

  • this is the illest cover, devo makes several different versions of this song, some are slower or same speed as this

  • annoying to hear chris cornell sing over a devo song

  • correction- SG is a great band, Devo is a singular band in modern music. It's like comparing every other guitarist to Hendrix.

  • this was on someone's list of best song covers, which is how i stumbled across it. i love soundgarden, but feel they made a mistake here. it IS too slow, and it's very depressing. vand now that i think about it, devo is probably one of the most under-rated bands of all time.

  • Yeah, they slow it down too much. The Zombie Ghost Train cover of this song is much better in my opinion. ZGT also did a really good cover of Runaround Sue, as well.

  • Dead Vampires also did a good cover, though they changed it to Ghoul U Want.

  • id slap 10 bucks in these dudes hands if i ever seen them, for making this ill cover

  • omg omg ogm, holy fucking shit, what the fuck goes on??? this is the most rediculous thing ever

  • Story I heard was that the Director of Tank Girl (Film) couldn't afford the Soundgarden License fee to use it in Tank Girl, thus to have a work around, he got Devo to reverse engineer the Soundgarden song Girl You Want. So Devo recorded Girl You Want in THEIR style making it sound like Soundgarden.

  • Yea, except the director of tank girl was a woman..otherwise you're right.

  • I don't think it's so bad. I just wish it was upbeat as the original but I guess that's just their thing.

  • Im starting to love this song .I did when I first heard it ,but thats just me

  • i hope the jonas bros band does a shitty cover of 'black hole sun' so soundgarden knows how it feels...

  • EXACTLY

  • That comment was funny as hell!

  • thank you

  • soundgarden turned this song into a trailer park rape anthem.

  • cris cornell is s song writing machine paying ommage to another

  • You fucktwit... the god damn title of the song is "Girl U Want" you fucking idiot, and I hope to god that's not how Soundgarden spelt it.

  • chris cornell/soundgarden makes this song kinda sexy

  • Yes and so does Mark Mothersbough/Devo

  • we must repeat

  • this song rules man! great song for cruisin around

  • This slower version gives the song a cool shoegazer feel, really cool move on their part I think.

  • Sounds like they were all on Oxy's.

  • I'm a HUGE DeVo fan, and I'll give it thumbs up. DeVo was about turning things up over end, if this isn't turning this song upside down then what is? Props!

  • they should speed up teh tempo

  • Chris Cornell knows that we are DEVO!!!!!!

  • wth is that supposed to be a compliment

  • Gotta love Soundgarden but this cover blows Spuds unite against change or not

    Covers should conform or not

    Devolution in progress or regress

    I say GOLLY

  • It sounds too slow for me. I'm disappointed, but Soundgarten is a great band, though !

  • this is the worst cover.

  • you crazy, thats hot! open your mind!

  • A cover is NOT supposed to be a duplicate of the original.

A cover is the band's DIFFERENT interpretation of a song.

A cover SHOULD BE sounding different than the original, or else why play it?

  • otherwise it's a tribute and should be judged that way

  • The guitar here is terrible. Destroys all the fun of the original. Soundgarden is a fine band but here they missed the mark by along shot.
