Soundgarden covering this song is like Christian-Rock...makes no sense to me. Like shouting at the devil (isn't that what Satan would want?)...Soundgarden for when i am depressed, sympathize with pot-smokers and want to lay around wallowing in self-pity. Devo for when I want to Whip-It, or rejoice or be flippant about De-evolution. I suppose it is flattering that they did this cover, but just bizarre.
Give Soundgarden props. It can't be easy to lay down a lazy-sounding cover of Girl U Want. Very difficult to get this vibe actually. Even SG couldn't hold back in the refrain.
All DEVO covers are technically failures within themselves. To my knowledge every single "cover" DEVO did they made their own. If you're covering DEVO... DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT WITH IT! Especially here, cause this sounds like crap period.
@MrTrty5 check out the KROQ Devotees album. KROQ held a contest soliciting DEVO covers from listeners, and they put the best ten on an album. Some of them are extremely reworked; Jocko Homo as a circus anthem, and played on a touch-tone phone are my two favourites.
@mycuff2 Yeah, go listen to that faggy band now. I bet you will cause if you say Soundgarden sucks you must have a really bad taste. If you don't like this cover, that's one thing, but Soundgarden sucks? Go listen to Britney.
I love this cover it has a totally different sound than the original which really represents the popular music of soundgarden's time. It's great but even though I like this nothing can beat the original.
Yeah, 'Rusty Cage' was fantastic, but Johnny Cash also did an exceptonal cover of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus"...alot better than Manson's rendition, in my opinion. lol. But his cover of NIN's "Hurt" might as well be the greatest cover song of all time.
That whole Johnny Cash album (Man Comes Around) is fucking awesome. I really love his version of "Hung my head" aswell (Sting Cover). As for "Girl U want" covers, my favourite is Zombie Ghost Train's version.
My dad grew up with Devo in Akron, and they came to my house to play with my uncles band in 73...I'm the biggest Soundgarden fan you'll find....and i'm a huge devo fan so i was so happy the first time i heard this, especially with the twist that soundgarden puts on it
The reason why Soundgarden is so good is that they aren't just into music LIKE THE MUSIC THEY MAKE....I bet all these guys love Devo, B 52s Talking Heads "Hey Mickey"
I've been meaning to listen to this for many years, finally here I am. This is one of the best Devo covers I've ever heard, something both Devo and Soundgarden can be proud of.
@Druffmaul Yeah for sure... I can't understand haters..... it's music and an art to be takin and put in any form the artist so desire's... you can like it or not
Even though Freedom of Choice was the huge hit album, I have always thought Duty Now for the Fututre was the best album and it would be nice to see more covers from that album.
Love the original, love THIS. It's obvious the band appreciates the song and that should be enough. It's cool that BOTH bands are playing dates this year after long periods away.
Pretty good cover, as a Devo fan I must say that this is a nice version the kind I would expect from Soundgarden. Speaking of great covers check out Devo - Satisfaction!!
I think it does a lot. Being able to juxtapose the sludgey, male-centric rock formula over a song like this and have it rock pokes holes in both formulas, and it would be easy to have it fall flat by being insincere about it. Soundgarden, certainly helped along by Matt Cameron's odd-time wizardry, shows that the song was no fluke for DEVO, and gives it a new set of legs to walk around on, hopefully turning people onto it who might not otherwise be caught dead listening to DEVO. Perfect B-Side.
It took me a little bit to adjust to it being played so thuddingly slow, but I kind of like this. In a way I think it's only appropriate that they tried to remodel it into a Soundgarden song, since any time Devo does a cover, they basically turn the source material into a Devo song (like their version of "Satisfaction" of course).
This song is my FIRST intro to SoundGarden. I grew up in the '70s-'80s and am a big fan of Mark M. and the gang. I couldn't believe another band did a cover of this. I drove to the closest "record" store to find it. They were out of their EPCD (extended play compact disc), for those of you under 35!!
Yep! However, Crow's Nest doesn't exist anymore. It closed a number of years ago. AB Gusto's is still open, though. (that's a bar across the street!)
if it wasnt a cover and just a regular song, it would be pretty cool, it still is, it isnt a bad cover, but its not quite as good as it could have been
This reminds me of Zeppelins' "When the Levee Breaks." There's no point in comparing this with Devos' version. They're totally different. As it should be. Why rehash something? Only Weird Al could out-Devo Devo at their own game.(Dare to be Stupid) I like this but I like the way the original makes me wanna jump around.

@p9byrd Being a cover has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not it has the feel of the original. That's a choice the band doing the cover makes. A lot of bands that do covers try to keep to the heart of the original song.
This cover blows and the instrumental makes no sense in the context of the lyrics. This is just SoundGarden bastardizing the song.
I really don't get the people who don't get why Soundgarden did this song in this style. That's because it's Soundgarden you dweebs. If they tried to do it like Devo it would be god damn awful. This would be in my top 3 covers. Also like Sonic Youth's "Superstar" by the Carpenters & The Cure doing "Don't Believe a Word" by Thin Lizzy.
Exactly dude. I heard a radio interview with the guys from Devo talking about when they played their cover of "Satisfaction" to Mick Jagger at his house to get his approval before releasing it. They described it as a typical Jagger moment - he started dancing round the room, yelling "I LOVE IT!" - in typical over the top Jagger style.
Oh yeah, another great cover was Johnny Cash's version of Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat". Cash's version of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" ruled too.

Yeah, they slow it down too much. The Zombie Ghost Train cover of this song is much better in my opinion. ZGT also did a really good cover of Runaround Sue, as well.
Story I heard was that the Director of Tank Girl (Film) couldn't afford the Soundgarden License fee to use it in Tank Girl, thus to have a work around, he got Devo to reverse engineer the Soundgarden song Girl You Want. So Devo recorded Girl You Want in THEIR style making it sound like Soundgarden.
I'm a HUGE DeVo fan, and I'll give it thumbs up. DeVo was about turning things up over end, if this isn't turning this song upside down then what is? Props!
Am I the only one that actually likes this cover ? I think its awesome

… this is THE girl we're talking about here… THE GIRL.
That's the way the lyrics in the original go… THE girl. SHE'S - THE ONE -.
She infests your dreams with that sweet sweet voice and her siren song, that aroma of undefined love, OMG THIS IS - TRUE LOVE - !
Fortunately, I no longer obsess over this kind of thing?
(but am no less susceptible - hiya SG !-)
PS: DEVO are genus ;-)

But nah, there's a big difference between A girl and THE girl. When you succumb to the allure of THE Girl-U-Want?
NONE OTHER WILL DO!

Yea, except the director of tank girl was a woman..otherwise you're right.

I don't think it's so bad. I just wish it was upbeat as the original but I guess that's just their thing.

This slower version gives the song a cool shoegazer feel, really cool move on their part I think.

I'm a HUGE DeVo fan, and I'll give it thumbs up. DeVo was about turning things up over end, if this isn't turning this song upside down then what is? Props!

It sounds too slow for me. I'm disappointed, but Soundgarten is a great band, though !

A cover is NOT supposed to be a duplicate of the original.
A cover is the band's DIFFERENT interpretation of a song.
A cover SHOULD BE sounding different than the original, or else why play it?
DancingSpiderman 3 years ago 5
otherwise it's a tribute and should be judged that way
sirlonghair 2 years ago
The guitar here is terrible. Destroys all the fun of the original. Soundgarden is a fine band but here they missed the mark by along shot.
