I think I love the scene between mother and son just before the proposal even more yhan the proposal itself ! Thornton is SO cute & gorgeous at the same time !
Plus the two of them make a really good mother/son duet.
This is my favorite part of North and South. It is the epitome of Margaret showing how not materialistic and independent she is, and how she couldn't care less about what people say about her. Well, this and the ordeal with her brother. Lol, I love the way his voice changes completely when he says, "Excuse me?"
Too bad that BBC deleted some part from the proposal scene, e.g. the discussion about the fruit. Margaret tells Thornton that her mother likes fruit, and later Thornton sends fruit to her mom.
proposal scene: I love his reactions! how he speaks, how he gets offended, how he tries to get closer to her, shouting he loves her. that is so sweet! poor little thing! he's hurting. ^_^
how ackward she is! and how violent with her choice of words! it's funny; it's the second time she refuses a man with almost the same sentence. Maybe she could have improved her way to do it. I don't know why I smiled, even if I felt for Thornton. I guess that's because she souds and looks so awkard.
when he askes her to marry him.. it is FAR FAR to much like P&P to be the soul work of Elizabeth Gaskell... so much like Jane austen its not even funny
I agree that Gaskell took alot from P&P. But I think that she uses romance to get people to read her book s in order to get them to read and think about the social issues.
@loveinthebattlefield but she probably thought the proposal (his love for her) wasn't geniune. That's what I got from it. I agree with her decision to refuse the proposal.
I never really understood what made him believe there are "other men", when she just said she doesn't know how to refuse/respond when a man speaks to her in that way.
Well, I think he's just hopelessly jealous, for no reason at all. It's just that she's pretty, it's only natural for him to suppose other men courted her and proposed her, above all when she says that, as if she already refused to other men.
@witchhuntergio There aren't in the book. After Mr Thornton has gone she wonders if being proposed to is always as painful and distressing as the TWO she has received.
I personally think that's because she says : "I don't know how to refuse when a man talks to me like u have", instead of "when you talk to me like that". When she says "a man" it includes that there was other men...
I understand what you mean! I was wondering too... but was lost as well as you were. I mean, she said she never learned, which means she has had no opportunity to. So why does he state that she has had the opportunity to? It is strange and I'm sorry but I don't know the answer either!
I was wondering what he meant. I don't know if he was asking her if his love and his heart were really that worthless to her since there were so many other suiters offering the same thing or he was telling her sarcastically that there's nobody else who will love her the way he does ("Right, as if there's a line of men waiting to propose to you in the streets!" sort of thing). The book makes me think the latter but the delivery is really vague.
Hey, thanks! :) I never thought about the sarcastic thing, that he actually didn't believe there were others! Now I've watched it again and it really could be interpreted in that way! Thanks a lot! :)
He was being mean to her because she had just rejected him. Naughty man. Of course he didn't think that there were others (or at least he didn't at this point in the story).
Well, he's pretty honest indeed, but really confident in the same time. She didn't realize hom much of an effort it was for him to confess his feelings. Too much pride in both sides !
Make sure to check out the extended proposal scene. It is even better than the one that made it into the movie! It's on youtube under "North & South (Extended Proposal Scene)" posted by HeathDances.
Yes, I watched it back then when I discovered N&S. It is so much better like that, and when I watch the shortened one, I can't help but see the missing parts !! The stress rising, the anger, the bitterness ! Both actors are truly excellent in that scene, as well as K Knightley and M Mac Fadyen in our beloved P&P.
vulnerable because he is in love.love makes you vulnerable because you depend on the feelings of the one you love.but Mr.Thornton certainly is a strong and brave man.
Did you notice that when Thornton leaves work to go to Miss Hale's, he has his hat in his hand. After she refuses him, he leaves her home bareheaded and with nothing in his hands. What happened to his hat? Were his gloves inside his hat at the beginning of this scene?
Il est très craquant dans cette scène. Perso j'aime bcp aussi son regard quand il quitte la maison de Higgins, qui vient juste d'évoquer Margaret : on dirait qu'il va le tuer !!
You mean her refusal ? Yes, but this isn't the whole scene, you can find the complete proposal scene on youtube. It seems a little less blunt as she says. But I think it isn't as violent as the proposal scene from Pride and Prejudice

I love how Thornton marches around all swarthy and scary and broody looking then he goes home and he's a right little Mummy's boy xD

what a beautiful complicity between the mother and her son. I like this conversation.
tout est beau dans la dernière partie de l'épisode.
merci beaucoup pour les sous titres; c'est super de partager des dramas aussi intenses
merci.

Haha, love the way he starts proudly 'I came because...' and then he's just like 'err... what did I say that I should say? So cute !
Check out for the extended prposal scene, otherwise you really won't see what is the colour of the fruit doing here.

Yeah, that could be.
It's also possible that he thinks her refusal means there's someone else...never thought about it that way...
Well, thanks! :)

Hey, thanks for contributing your opinion! :)
I'm starting to believe that Thornton simply was in no state to think logically in that moment... ;))

Silly girl how could she refuse him.
I love Thornton in this scene because he is so vulnerable and raw with his emotions.
-Sighs- can I keep him.
