Radar, whether 1.7m, 10cm or the later 3cm were important but but not in isolation. It needed the Leigh Light to make ASV a submarine killer. Also HF/DF (HuffDuff) on small ships was possibly equally important, as were the escort carriers and increasing numbers of more capable escort vessels.
All in all, it was as Wellington said "A damned close run thing."
It was the introduction of airborne radar that finsihed off the U boats. If it hadn't been for a Welshman called Dr Taffy Bowen we would have been finished. Even Admiral Doenitz mentioned the role he played!!!

10cm radar was one of the true unsung inventions of World War II. Of course all you hear about is German stuff.
