Something I never noticed before.. in the closing 250m, the Canadian in the 3 seat is out of sync with Barney Williams at stroke, beating him up the slide and taking his crewmates at 2 and bow with him. His shins also go past the vertical at front-stops, unlike the rest of the crew. Obviously the crew as a whole was still pretty darn fast despite this. But could they have been faster?
I watched this race repeatedly throughout my high school career and I'm now just seeing this. This is by far the most unbelievable video of rowing you can discover on youtube. Such legends in this video.
What an amazing race! Still has the hairs on the back of my neck stand up even after all these years! Too bad Steve wasn't still in the team for that one. Amazing. Good luck for our boys on London 2012....
What an amazing Olympic moment. Nothing like seeing the very best go one step beyond and claim their race. I was cheering for Canada, but was just blown away by the moves in the last 500 to the finish. What a great race...and what a drama
Probably the greatest Olympic rowing race ever! I remember well watching this and feeling sick as the Canadians pulled ahead, then watching awestruck as the British pulled it back! Ed coode is probably the most underrated athlete ever! Legend!
The Canadians had the little boat that could. The Brits chose to put their hard hitters in the straight 4 rather than the 8. That the race could have gone either way is enormous credit to the Canadian team. Only Jake Wetzel went on to enjoy Gold in Beijing. The other 3 in the boat moved on to other things. Come to think of it: what if the Canadian boat had won. Would Jake had moved on too? If so, what would the impact have been on the development of the Canadian 8 where he was an asset?
Also well said but in rowing I always find commentators to be a bit biased towards britan usa canada and australia although there are many crews (depending on which final) that have just as much potential to win but they still get little attention
@paintball254 Bravo for being a good sport Mr Paintball254 and expressing international unity! I understand what you mean, but as Mr SRALtwt4Seat said, commentators rightly honour their country of origin. Also, perhaps it's the same in Canada and the U.S., but here in the UK the commentators are all ex oarsmen themselves, so you can expect some of those old feelings of rivalry and reverence for other specific countries to come through in what they say. It's not such a big deal really.
I remember being in the bleechers at the LA Olympics and one of the highlights was sitting within earshot of the respective world press and listening to the various reporters and how each focused on their own countries teams.....which is what you would expect...right! Obviously all the teams are close at this very elite level.
@oneworldfamily Just spotted this comment again (Yes, I do come back to watch this video that often. It's one of my favorite recorded racesof all time.) after some time. Canada, USA, Australia, and Britian are four of the biggest forces in rowing and over the course of the last several Olympics they have done the best in the sweeping events, but lots of other countries get recgoniztion for sculling events, such as France in this video which I highly reccomend you watch /watch?v=a3b8eZyVPdA
@paintball254 Every country is going to have biase for their country. Would you be happy if (I am not sure if you're American or not, but I will assume you are for right now.) a US announcer paid little to no attention to the US simply because they were focusing on the MANY other nations? No. The country is going to support their athletes. That's just how it is.
@tiaguinho619 Yeah Matthew exudes supreme confidence in his/their abilities. If you watch one of the Gold Fever episodes I uploaded he's talking to Steve about how much they're going to win by!!

@Lippmaniac No idea I'm afraid. I assumed it was some incidental music from the BBC. It sounds like it might be good 2k erg test music!

@oneworldfamily The name of the song is Palladio. Various artist have done covers, my personal favorite is by Escala.
