I get these insects by the truck load in my backyard every summer... we can set our watches by them... end of May, all of June, to the end of July... never seen one in April or August.
You only see them around your home after they breed. The females hang out at the tree she bred in, the male moves on and usually finds a nice porch light to hang around while death comes. Oh, they bite and are aggressive as ALL GET OUT. Stay away from them.
Nice show and info! :-) That's the stuff that SciFi movies are made of! Extra-large, PVC pipe-eating super bugs. I can't say I've ever seen a bug with forward-looking eyes like that - looks like it's staring right at us!
4" is a BIG bug but hard to really "picture" without something in the shot for scale, like a hand or foot. Maybe you could have picked it up for a quick shot! Hahaha just how brave Are you? XD
yeah, ya know I did put my foot by it for a second to show scale, but the shot didn't come out very well so I cut it out. I'll definitely do that next time -- hell I might even pick it up since I know it's relatively gentle now. At the time I had no idea what it was, so it was scary! thanks for commenting!
They like to come out at night... they are attracted to house lights.... SHIT

Just like the verse in the song about the frog and the mouse getting married:
"After that came the big black bug
(Bring somebody, we should gamble!)
On his back was a cider jug
(Bring somebody, we should gamble!)

Some good video footage and the info on this little bug is great to hear. I wouldn't like to find one in my slippers!
