This is from the American Folk Blues Festival, 1967 European tour.
The film footage was taped for a Danish tv-channel, 11 October 1967. The complete footage also includes: Skip James, Son House, Bukka White, Hound Dog Taylor, Koko Taylor, Little Walter and Otis Rush. All videos can be found on youtube.
To all you guys who complain that you were born too late to see Sonny & Brownie play: You're right. No video comes close to capturing the energy and the music they made. I saw them about 1/2 dozen times in the 70s. Incredible and unforgettable!!!
To all you guys who complain that you were born too late to see Sonny & Brownie play: You're right. No video comes close to capturing the energy and the music they made. I saw them about 1/2 dozen times in the 70s. Incredible and unforgetable!!!
I surf alot around youtube, and even the most famous songs do usually have a "dislike" wote... but not Sonny Terry and Brownie... they are way to cool for that.
Brownie and Sonny were masters of the Piedmont blues. The Delta blues. is a very different sound--and not all blues sound alike, even within the regional traditions. As with any musical genre, you have to listen a while to understand it.
Gotama... I've got the video, unbelieveable but also in the room were, Hounddog Taylor, Little Walter, Koko Taylor, Bukka White, and a few more I'm sure I'm forgetting.
I'll tell you who else was in that room... Koko Taylor,. Hound Dog Taylor,. Little Walter,. Bukka White,.. and when you watch the dvd (American Folk & Blues Festival vol 3), you can see how Skip James' and Son House's eyes light up when Brownie starts blowing that horn....
WTFFFFFFFFF, Who, please, anyone, name me anyone who can play that Harp like Mr. Sonny? I know there's a lot of talented guys/girls out there with this instrument, but his style- I find- is tooooo tough to copy. It's complicated and SMOOTH, I try and copy and it's UNATURAL
i have searched a very long time for another harp player like terry, i say with confidence there is nobody EVER who will play like him. the only thing i suggest is something that i noticed and began to copy, and it actually helps the style - try playing the cross harp backwards, with the 10th hole on the left, and the 1st hole on the right, it seems like it is easier to bend and manipulate notes with the reeds upside down. just my speculation though.
Sure, various folks expanded on the blues...rock, rockabilly, soul, R&B, Motown, rap, hip hop, jazz, fusion, etc.....but remember the BLUES came first--- well over 100 years ago.
How can any of you say anything. dont critise their music because its their music. and reflects what they are. just listen make your own links, but dont become a critic.
you fucks... tednottodd is right. plus SRV sucks. he has no soul compared to these guys. this music is the real deal. "SRV", as you call him, has NOTHING on this, and never will.
the blues had a baby and they named it rock and roll. you guys don't know a thing about the blues. SRV loved these old blues masters, even he knew they were the real deal. he was borrowing all their licks, throwing in his Hendricks licks and calling it new. Nothing wrong with that, that's what all musicians do, but it ain't new.
all delta blues usually sound the same. If you ever hear a blind boy fuller or robert johnson album, all there songs sound the same. Its people like SRV that took blues to a different level.
You have a lot of growing up to do lad. It's cool to have your hero's, I loved Stevie too, saw him 5 or 6 times live. But SRV was SRV because of cats like this. I've watched your video, not bad for a beginner, but you will live to be 100 before you can play an acoustic guitar and sing like Brownie. Listen and learn child.....but keep jammin.
Its amusing you think SRV took anything to a new level he was good.. But typically as in all music the people who REALLY took things to new levels are forgotten and the credit is given where its due but not as much as it should be
