Emo consists of three chords loosely played in 4/8 repetitions for the sake of supporting whining, moaning vocals with 2/2 or 2/4 drum patterns in the background. Thrash metal contains tightly-played sweeps, spider riffs, hammering, bending, etc. Your emo musicians wouldn't even know what the tremolo bar (for guitar newbs) is if Guitar Hero didn't give bonus points for using it.

Actually, "emo" refers to emotive. As in, emotive hardcore. Funny story, some of the artists quite early on used to get quite emotional on stage during some songs. People who werent exactly fans of the genre thought to themselves "Heh.. Emotive? More like Emotional." and it was all a big joke and many lulz were had. But now we have a problem; people are confused as to what the word "emo" really means. The joke has spiralled out of control and obscured the reality of the word "emo".
