@snailhands I am curious.. how do fingers effect the TONE? I agree playing can be cleaner sounding and open up possibilities impossible with a pick (then again, I like to tremolo pick a lot on bass and it's hard to do with fingers, so the inverse is true too). But, unless I misunderstood your post, I don't see how this could effect the actual tone of the bass.
@mradamcooley There is more treble attack when using a pick, and you loose your low-end by a pretty big margin, which is not desirable when playing stoner/doom. Hence, why every doom metal player usually uses their fingers. Al Cisneros never uses a pick and it's obvious that he derives his tone from Geezer Butler, who has the best bass tone for doom style music in my opinion.
@mradamcooley Speaking very generally, fingers=more bass, softer attack, pick=more treble, harder attack. I try to offset the increased brightness of pickstyle by using flats and boosting low mids.
@otusqueeky1 Neither did I until I tried to learn the damn thing. I'm still not really sure how Al is counting some of the parts but I made it through this take!
@thirdwheel one hour's worth of song where every change and tangent was thought out prior recording?
that would require all three of them using sheet music.
i mean, thats about the only way i could really see it.
i just assumed they jammed for their entire recording session, listened to the sessions, and then took one final take using the best bits from the earlier sessions as way points between the main riff.
@alucardisdumb Every bit of Dopesmoker was planned out in advance, as the band themselves said in Decibel's feature on the album. The song gradually evolved over a period of several years, and you can actually hear that evolution if you check out the bootlegs of the '94 tour. The tempo is a lot faster, but most of the riffs are there.
@alucardisdumb Nope it was planned. Here's the band's whiteboard with the riffs lifted out: h ttp :// a1. sphotos. ak. fbcdn . net/hphotos-ak-snc6/284630_10150247360737811_559977810_7866938_2520795_n .jpg Remove the spaces.
@BovartNigga Did Prison Planet already, check my other videos. There are a few good Spacegrass videos on youtube so I'll probably try something else. Been messing around with "Muchas Veces" and "Eight Times Over Miss October" lately so I might do one of those.
play with your fingers!! you'll get such a better tone.

Well with all analysis of the evolution of Sleep's "Dopesmoker" structure aside, THIS ROCKS!

@dhenriquezmedia Thank you! I've spent an absurd amount of time figuring out how this song works, so I do tend to ramble about it sometimes, haha.

So glad to see you use a pick. Finger picking is overplayed.

This bass line is very reminiscent of Geezer Butler in all of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

see the real trick to al's playing is that he plays everything improv for the most part.
i mean he has times where he reigns it it for changes in beat/time signiture shit like that.
alucardisdumb 9 months ago
@alucardisdumb Live, maybe, but Dopesmoker was not improvised at all on this recording.
