If government scientists are being censored by politicians, defiance is absolutely called for. As scientists, their first duty is to the evidence, not the whims of their superiors.

Is this guy an idiot? "There were 350 more *POLITICAL* appointees under bush than cliton. THEY"RE POLITICAL! POLITCAL! POLITICAL! Where did they go? Well the only real logical explanation here is that they went to fight against the scientists because they're *EVIL* republicans."
Dude, there are legitimate gripes that you can have against Bush, pulling things out of your ass and claiming that the republicans are having a "war on science" is deliberately ignorant.

I love these pseudo intelectual liberals who have never taken a math class in their life lecturing us on science.
Embryonic stem cell research is debanked by the American Medical Association. An embryonic stem cell cannot be put into an adult human without grave risk of cancer which is why currently the research is on adult stem cells. Here's a question for Mr. Mooney if embryonic stem cells are useful try telling me why instead of lecturing me on what politics I should have.
Please research your topics a little more. Scientist aren't simply going to pump stem cells into an adult. However, scientist can and have created organs (such as bladders and other structures) that are rather needed for an adult to function. They have less chance of rejection and other symptoms of transplants. Best part: No one has to give up an organ for some one else to get one.
PS: He's talking about politics because that is what the speech was about, not stem cells.
I don't agree completely with your logic. Though there are many ignorant people who deny science depite the evidence that is right there in the thier face, I see science as not disproving God, but demonstrating just how elegant and beautiful his work is. To me, science proves there is a God.
We are nearing the end of religious incredulity. Every single year science uncovers new evidence, which without intent, sullies the integrity of religion everywhere.
I can't help but feel that what we are currently experiencing is religion's "last gasp!" Kicking and screaming, unwilling to behave rationally, the pious will stop at nothing as they attempt to smother scientific discovery.
How is it possible that three educated persons could obliterate a vast amount of scientific evidence that has been proven to be a rational and coherent theory? I can not even fathom voting for someone who is blind to plain facts and reality in order to validate some subjective belief. If a candidate can deny these facts in favor of a misplaced religious conviction, what other facts is that candidate capable of doubting?
what does science have to do with abortion at all? abortion is a political man made decision, it has no impact on science at all. now, if you're talking about embryonic stemcell research and how bush wont allow testing on those, then perhaps you have something going.
Science has a lot to say on the issue of abortion:
There are those that claim that because a zygote has a complete set of DNA it should therefore be considered a "person" with rights (and even that the rights of such a person should trump the rights of the mother - but that's another issue).
Science tells us that at the end of life, the cells and tissues of a fully formed human body can be kept metabolizing long after the brain of the person is dead and unrecoverable. There is little or no controversy that such a body ceases to qualify as a person despite it having a full set of DNA inside cells that are metabolizing and replicating. So, based on scientific evidence, we can say that the standard set for "personhood" used by "pro-lifers" is inconsistent.
Moreover, science tells us that the cells of a 4 day old zygote are completely undifferentiated cells; they are completely incapable of higher function beyond duplication of themselves (much like adult stem cells). Not only that, but there are fewer cells in the cluster of a zygote than in the brain of a fly. As such, a zygote has less sentience than even a fly: it is completely incapable of suffering and additionally it has no personal history nor memory that's lost in its destruction.
Finally, if in fact we are unable to use science to determine the threshold of when a person's life begins and ends then a strong case can be made that the threshold is a religious-based standard, and as we all know, it's unconstitutional for the U.S. government to enact laws based on religious assertions.
i totally agree with your outlook on the issue. it's not one of black and white definition, but varied levels of gray, dependent upon circumstances. religion uses absolutism to define life's begging and end, when in reality it's grayed throughout.
"There are those that claim that because a zygote has a complete set of DNA it should therefore be considered a "person" with rights"
I'm sorry, this is patently absurd. What about when they split? What about when they fuse? You're playing a very crude arithmetic here and it is not appropriate.
Life beginning at cognition and sentience is a much more logical position, unfortunately, this does nothing to please the religious right who, for some reason, so desperately want to protect the unborn.
This is very astute, but I think science will survive. It's interesting that anti-liberals (other than me) are the only ones who see fit to comment to far. Must be getting under the skin :-)
science is not liberal or conservative you bloody fool. It is a pure subject. Politics is a abusive unpure entity used by those in power to get what they want. Regardless of the truth.

Liberals claim to be 'scientific' yet many do not believe in the concept of human races. The preach equality.
I don't think there need be mroe evidence to prove genetic human variation between populations.
