Howdy Doody is such an icon in the history of childrens televison! I wonder if the little boy billy tate from mobile alabama is still alive! I can't help but look at all those young people & wonder how many became parents, grandparent or even great grand parents! What their lives turned out like, if their still alive they'd be about 70 now?
Don't you remember when Buffalo Bob had his heart attack and Pinky Lee filled in for him till he recovered and returned? It was in the mid-1950's. THen, Princess Summer Fall Winter Spring, played by Judy Tyler, disappeared when she died in real life from car wreck? She was replaced by a puppet! Mary L. Foess
@samk1101 Do you mean "afro" as in African American? You know they didn't show African American people on tv back then unless they were depicting some kind of servant. I am glad that we (our country) has come so far in this area. Although, we still have far to go.
The little boy is my dad! Right now we live in Austin, Texas even though he was originally from Mobile, Alabama. Right now he is 67 and has really changed since then! Now he has really loud and obnoxious voice and is not shy at all. He still has the video that they gave him and this is the same one
@heatherinparis You must be Canadian. Timber Tom was the Canadian counterpart to Buffalo Bob, to satisfy the CanCon rule so the show could air there. For a while, he was also played by "Buffalo Bob" Smith. The two versions were taped one after the other, and occasionally Howdy would *almost* refer to his human pal by the wrong name.
Clarabelle is one creepy clown. I guess you'd have to like clowns. I would have had nightmares. But this was another era and I'm sure most kids loved this show. I have a friend who was in the peanut gallery when he was a kid, and I was curious to learn about this show. Thanks for posting.
Mr.Forrest was serving as the guest host/performer on"Puppet Playhouse"/"Howdy Doody"..just as"Children's Theater"was making it's debut on WNBT TV Ch.4 in NYC.
TV is big if 1 mil viewers tune-in. Back then, radio pulled over 40 million listners per shows, like Jack Benny & Amos & Andy - in the early days of tv when the airwaves werent cluttered with so much J U N K. you could count well over a milllion viewers - Come to think about it I prefered those days to these and you didnt have to pay to be insulted with the mindless "stuff" of today. Thast the reason I tune in to UT as much as I do.
actually the reason radio ray and a few other hosts filled in is because buffalo bob as in the hospital. while he recouperated a few other hosts filled in to keep the show and merchandise going until buffalo bob could return. the kids were told why buffalo bob couldn't be there and seemed to be okay with having other hosts for the tiem being when it occurred.
I was wrong..that was not Jimmy Blaine serving as the show's guest host/performer..that was Ray Forrest..hosting the show as"Rodeo Ray".Mr.Forrest was the host/performer of WNBT/WRCA/WNBC TV Ch.4 NYC's"Children's Theater".
That was Jimmy Blaine serving as a subsitute host/performer on the show. Mr.Blaine would go onto host the first version of NBC TV's and Hanna/Barbera's
"Ruff & Reddy Cartoon"with the Rufus Rose puppets.
I'm quite sure that, by August of '49, "Buffalo" Bob Smith, who hosted EVERY "PUPPET PLAYHOUSE" telecast since it began in December 1947 (as well as his morning "drive-time" radio show on WNBC-AM, New York), was "worn out" to the point where he said to NBC, "I NEED SOME TIME OFF!!!". So, "Rodeo Ray" filled in for him on this episode [but he still managed to pre-record Howdy's voice on disc], and others did fill in for him from time to time...but NOBODY could handle the show the way Bob did.
August,1949?Buffalo Bob must have been on vacation since Rodeo Ray was hosting. This was way back when Bob Keeshan was still Clarabelle and Dayton Allen was still the voice of Mr.Bluster.
I think Both.Dayton Allen, who also did many voices for Terrytoons(including Heckle AND Jeckle)was behind many of the marionettes on the Howdy Doody show(Including Hector Hamhock Bluster,Phineas' other brother). When he was fired in 1952(along with Bob Keeshan, over a salary dispute)he had many other jobs on shows like Winky Dink.Allen Swift turned out to be good enough to replace him on the voices of puppets like Mr.Bluster, the Inspector and the Flubadub.
@gabsylv Give me a break. This isn't about social commentary. It's not that America was perfect in 1949-- we know it had problems. But t.v. was a lot better. TV is a reflection of society's values. This tv show was wholesome and good and a lot better than Snooki and Kim Kardashian's crap all over t.v.
