female rappers was the shit in the 90's they got a lot bolder and more sexy. yoyo, kim, missy, mia x, foxy, eve, queen pen, left eye and lauryn was the shit!!!
I rememer hearing about this album, but I think it got shelved and not released. I could be wrong though. She looked great! The hook by Lavert sounds like a D-Train song called "Something's on My Mind", but I could be wrong.
Seriously--she is really prettttty. The green eyes are craaaazy. She's probably one of the top gorgeous female rap chicks. She has pretty features. After all these years I'm just really noticing how bomb she is :-) She could be Tyra Banks sister, really tho'~
Yoyo'z my favorite female rapper, Ever!! She puts it down harder than them all, period! Beyonce got no realness compared to Yoyo. Props to Yoyo and Ice Cube, the REAL BONNIE AND CLYDE!!
she is a old school legend for the new gen!! im one of her Fans. Yo-Yo, Queen Latifah, And Mc Lyte made it possible for the up coming female rappers. I was lsitnening to all of them as a teen myself. Now im 33 and remember all there songs
I thought of this song for years and years and years. I knew I had it on tape somewhere (recorded from the radio) and FINALLY I found it. I was so happy and rocked the shit out of it!!!
My favorite song of hers although album was shelved, the industry sucks for underating her talents fools they are, but supposedly sucking up and sex sells, not real messages in rap.
Yeah, it was just something that I noticed everytime Yo-Yo gives shoutouts and or interviews, even when she talks about female rappers. How can you talk about most of the old female rappers and even the newest rappers that have not been out that long, but skip over Salt 'N Pepa?
It's almost like it is done on purpose, that is why I was just curious, but anyway, they were on BET performing together (sort of anyway).
I asked this on youtube before & some people answered as best they could, but the question is: Why doesn't Yo-Yo ever shoutout Salt 'N Pepa? Never in any songs or interviews does she mention them.
Even this song, she mentions some hip-hop playas, everyone but Salt 'N Pepa. How can you not mention them. It was only in the recent BET 2008 Music Awards that I seen them together, at least when the camera is rolling.
I have never heard any beef between them & was just curious that's all.
That's interesting, I never realized that until you brought it up. I doubt there was ever any beef between them. Yo-Yo probably had a tighter relationship with some of the other female rappers. I notice she mentions Mc Lyte and Queen Latifah a lot. Lyte and Yo Yo were both on the same label in the early nineties, so they probably formed a solid relationship from ending up at industry parties all the time. As far as Latifah, she worked a lot in Hollywood during the early 90's going back to
Fresh Prince of Bell Air and of course Living Single and probably bumped into Yo-Yo a lot, who stayed on the west coast. Then later on all three of them ended up on the "I Wanna Be Down" remix, so they must have a lot of history together. Salt N Pepa stayed a lot on the east coast and weren't on the same label.
On this song she shoutouts Missy, Lil Kim, Da Brat, Foxy Brown, and Queen Pen who all happened to be popular in 98. I guess she was just keeping it current. SNP broke up around
You're welcome! I'm a Yo-Yo fan too...I hope she doesn't hang up her rapping days completely, it would be good to see her tour with some other hot female rappers from back then.
The album "Ebony" had it been released and promoted right could have kept her in the ranks with the top ladies in the game at the time...I have the album it was good.
Exactly...I've heard some of the album and it sounded like a more mature Yo-Yo but her edge was still there...She could've easily had a hit with Ebony.
I agree she did develope more as an artist it was certainly more radio friendly then her previous stuff..."Do you wanna ride?" with Kelly Price(MJB initially recorded it with Yo-Yo but label poiltics & contractual ish prohibited Mary from being on the song) would have been the 2nd single it did get sent to DJ's and I can remember hearing a few clubs play it.
Yo-Yo had her own radio show for a few years but it has been canceled recently. She also had a tv show called Ms. Rap Supreme where she attempted to find the next hottest female rapper. So she has tried to stay current.
know what u mean... dat song is dope! ok, gotta say that tha old stuff with ice cube was better... but it´s still boomin! sry i didn´t know about the tv or the radio show because i´m not from the states, but i can imagine that the shows were good ;)

@only1jamesp It was done as a tribute. She says "We lost 2 of the best in the game. N... What's good?" - She's referring to biggie and 2pac

Remember I have been asking if there were any problems between Yo-Yo and Salt N Pepa?
It seems like, lately, they have been performing together. Maybe that's a nod to people like me who were inquiring about their relationship.
They should make a song together!!

"The eyes are green, I used to rock braids and tight jeans"
"It was all a dream, I used to read Word Up magazine"
"I came back like you thought I would but we lost two of the best in the game, so what's good?"
"I'm blowin up like you thought I would, call the crib same number same hood, it's all good"
She shouts out to female rappers the same way he shouts out to DJs.
Like I said, still a hot song, but you can't deny the similarities in delivery.

Back when this song first came out, I was trying to figure out if she rapped this way as a tribute to B.I.G..
BDizzleNY06 2 years ago
yeah I think that might be it, I mean that would make the most sense.
symmetryx 2 years ago
Yeah it was a tribute to BIG and Pac...because she refrences both of them...it's just how she was feeling a the time about the game.
boriquacub76 2 years ago
yeah I see the similarities and the intentions...some folks just want to over analyze.
