  • 5:47 The actual stall was witnessed by his wife on the carrier Nimiitz. It was not planned for.

  • What's Charlie Sheen doing in this old movie?

  • I think a dogfight like this would be tricky for the Tomcat pilots as well as the Japanese. The Zero's best dogfighting speed was below 250mph; the Tomcat's is well above this. At these low speeds the Zero had optimal maneuverablility while the F-14 would be grasping for lift somewhat; the Tomcat's stall speed is 127mph. Probably what the Tomcat pilots would do is make "boom and zoom" passes with their cannon or missiles rather than try to turn with the Zekes.

  • Zero: RAT-A-TAT-TAT

    F14: BRAAAAAP! BUH BYE!

Love that Vulcan Rotary Cannon!!! 20 mm rounds at 6000 rounds per minute!!!

I miss these old "rah rah America" movies from the Cold War.

  • Thanks for uploading. Great movie!

  • What's really amazing is that the "modern" jets in this clip are nearly as old and primitive today in 2012 as the Japanese zeros were when this movie came out in 1980. Today's B1 and F18 would cut these Vietnam-era jets in half.

  • Ultimate Vengeance Moment - 6:45 - after the Captain of the Aircraft Carrier says "Splash the Zero's"....it shows those the F-14's wings folding back...know what that means?! AFTERBURNER TIME!!!! if the sheer gravity disturbance of these two fighter jets didn't knock those 2 Japanese Planes outta the sky, their Radar Locks DEFINITELY WILL

  • That one F-14 almost put it in the water, I'm sure it was a mistake to go below 500'

  • If only Hollywood would make films like these now instead of all those dark gloom and doom films. And all those damn comic book characters i'm sick of seeing on the big screen. make one about real heroes.

  • Just wondering how the pilots could know so much about what was happening to the people on the yacht way before they got there?

  • @SuperMagnumpi The F-14 actually carries an onboard videocamera system meant to identify Russian bombers at long range. (ie, 50 miles) So it's very likely they could see the yacht and people with it as they were much, much closer than that.

  • F14 Tomcat...such a beautiful machine!

  • man, I miss the tomcat

  • Love the video..Fast forward to 5:50..tomcat goes into stall, dropping to 500 ft..hits afterburners before crashing..splash the dam zeroes already!

  • Haha the thing is they didn't even need to use missiles ! They coulda have kept using their guns and save the missiles for the Nazis !

  • 5:53

The F14 was almost lost and -just- recovered in time in this scene.

  • in the film, as soon as the Captain of the Carrier gives the F14 Tomcats "Clearance to Arm and Fire", they hit the Afterburners...you see like a quarter shot of one of the F14 Tomcats & the wings like fold-back, & the light coming from the jets gets a lot more concentrated & it's like, to begin with, the fuel that the F14 has to burn off costs more then the entire fucking Japasnese Zero....

  • hey... does the zoeroes add on to the f14 kill count?

  • Wonder what happened to the pair of F-14's that appeared in the movie. . .Hoped they survived the scrapping and made it to a museum. . .

  • Harvey cant swim, but he can float!

  • @HuasoPodrido Harvey had a life vest on, dude. That's obvious even in the video. If nothing else, Senator Chapman orders him to take it off and dive under the water, which refuses to do, stating that he can't swim.

  • Incredible video! This sequence comprised some of my favorite daydreams before I noticed girls! ...and to think: these were F-14A's. BEFORE they got the engine upgrade from the TF-30's

  • It's like the best of naval aviation comes full circle, the A6M being the first and the F14 being the last.

  • The Zero Pilots were scared shitless when they saw the Tomcats!

  • @SenseiJubei You forgot that the F-14 looks much better than the F-18, and combat scenes wouldn't have the same feel to them.

  • just a great movie. Thanks for posting

  • I love the F-14s

  • this movie rocks for those others who like this movie you should read the book weapons of choice it's about advanced fleet of warships that gets thrusts back to WW2 very ineresting book

  • @Dogapsa

Cool idea, but the best thing is that Peter Douglas(Kirk's son) was in this film too, and a SEQUEL would be cool if the Dougs were in it playing 2 generations of Capt. Yallering, like Tideman's character.

But I also plead the SCARFACE angle: I would rather this time(less) legacy continue as a videogame franchise to hardcore fans.

  • God, Tomcats are so beautiful in real life...

  • They should be a remake of this movie but a 2010 Aircraft carrier Fleet sent back to 1776 and assist destroying the British Navy in the Atlantic

  • But, then again, if they did do a remake, they would have to use F-14s--I"m but there is NO subsitute--so I wouldn't mind seeing the CGI!

  • I think that they used the Nimitz b/c of its namesake....

  • Is the story about the pilot of one of the F14 actually recovering from a near crash after stalling in that scene really true ( check 5:50 ) ??? Would really like to know as he sure as hell looks like he missed the water from really few inches...

  • @Shaktidej I believe what happened was that when the pilot was trailing the Zero he didn't realize that in that slow speed climb, that he dipped below 100 knots and stalled as he went inverted so he had to punch the burners and pull out. It wasn't a stunt, it was an accident, but it looked good and sounded good, so they went with it.

  • Please dont remake this movie they will ruin it ,Hollywood writers would put some polictical statement in there some how to coinside with the fucked up times Leave this one alone so i will always have this great movie in my memory bank

  • @GLDHUNTRS I totally agree. Hollyweird, please leave this movie alone!

  • AWESOME movie

  • Loved this movie, thanks for posting these clips. The roar of the approaching tomcats is awesome, like the thunder of justice.

  • @BlahGuyson--Thanks for the info.

  • Cool footage and music to match.

  • The Zeroes were highly maneuverable, but yes, at the cost of VERY light armor-it was only as thick and tough as the receiver of a modern day M-16 rifle. Couldn't go in excess of somewhere around 600 mph or else the airframe would start disintegrating in mid-flight!

  • @JerseyCaptain weren't the Mitsubishi A6-M's highly manoeuverable, but lightly armored? I'm not sure,do you know?

  • @Dakers11 Sorry I didn't see this sooner, Dakers. I don't check as often as I should. I really don't know though.

  • @JerseyCaptain The A6M had no pilot armor and no self-sealing fuel tanks. These "shortcomings" were designed in to save weight and thus allow spectacular performance from a less than spectacular engine. When shot with explosive ordnance or incendiary bullets the Zero flamed up like a meteor. There's is almost no way a Tomcat could shoot down a Zero such that the pilot could survive.

  • @enscroggs

    its a movie ffs

  • @enscroggs Right on target my friend. That is why The Grumman F-6 Hellcat was built. To shoot down the A6M. Amazing to see the last good Grumman Ironworks bird (the Tomcat) in action. Had the priviledge (as CVW-14 MMCPO) to watch VF-31 Felix in action on this great aircraft's last combat cruise.

  • @Dakers11 yes they were, but it means nothing when your up against an opponent who has you radically outgunned in the radar and speed department haha!

  • @Dakers11

yes, the A6M had very light armouring.

  • @Dakers11 The Mitsubishi Zero was a highly maneuverable, but not at top speed when its roll rate decreased. The Zero was a kite, protective armour and self-sealing gas tanks weren't part of the design. The emphasis was on range, rate of climb, etc. but to achieve these design goals, the pilot protection was zilch. The movie fudges a bit for storyline; a 2 round burst from 20 mm HEI would have blown Zero out of the air and 2 m effective explosion radius would have killed the pilot instantly.

  • Remakes I’ve just about now fucking had enough of them! I don’t even bother going to the cinema for remakes and CGI and this fucking 3D crap! It’s simple to clean up the film prints and re-release them it costs far less money over a re-make that everyone is going to dislike.

  • They had no chance of getting out of it against the F-14 Tom Cats. Meow Gotcha!

  • A remake only this time med sea and this time the cats buzz by one of Hitlers speeches, and of course check the Russian front.

  • I'm not talking about a Remake ! I'm talking about a continuation. No CGI, just a real Super Carrier with its crew as Extra's that ends up along side the Nimitz. Thats the the beginning of the story. Then the Super Carrier is sent to first Century Rome, surrounded by a thousand Roman vessels who attack the Super Carrier. Check the History of Rome's Navy. Fact, a storm at that time hit the mighty Roman Navy and out of a thousand ships only two ships returned to port. Or was it a storm?

  • @Dakers11 I think a remake would be OUT OF ORDER! Just clean the print up for a 4 week cinema release in DOLBY STEREO DIGITAL selected for THX cinemas only because only THX can GIVE IT THE PUNCH!

  • never remake this movie!!!!

  • @metaljohn666 Not gonna ruin the end if you haven't seen it, but the dog actually plays a key roll! And yep, he makes it. Good ol' Charlie!

  • All I know is if I were one of those Japanese pilots I would say fuck this and go home and eat some tacos or something.

  • I think it could be remade, but it would require delicate care and the help of the U.S. Navy once again. Screw the CGI.. give us the real deal again.

  • @maelstrom79: It'd be interesting to see how the Japanese navy of 1941 reacted to supersonic tomahawk cruise missiles hitting their ships. I imagine that'd be a shocker.

  • @maelstrom79 Sir, both the Tomahawk (RGM/UGM-109 series) and the harpoon (AGM-84/RGM-84UGM-84) missiles are subsonic missiles (R- ship launched, A- air launched, U- submarine launched). Other than that, interesting suggestion.

  • 5:48 The screaming of the Tomcat...goosebumps.

  • I love this scene, best part of the movie. And no never make a re-make

  • I love this scene, best part of the movie

  • Yet another video ( and movie ) to prove the Tomcat KICKS A**

  • The Japanese Zeroes were the most feared on the planet for their maneuvarability and if I thought I was never going back to my own time, militarily I would have no choice but to take orders under President Roosevelt and wreak havoc on the Empire of Japan!!! But my question is would it cause a time paradox it makes you wonder?????

  • this movie is so f-ing cool.

that is my OFFICIAL review. can U DIG IT?

  • One modern aircraft carrier would have won the war in under a year.

  • They were the true talons of the sky, prestine angels with wings of fire.

  • An excellent movie, and I watch it on DVD almost every other day. Just one small error. In the movie, the Nimitz encounters the storm on 6 Dec 1980 and is swept back in time to 6 Dec 1941 (one day before the attack.) When Kirk Douglas shows aerial recon photos to James Farentino, Farentino says "our planes have taken photos of something that hasn't existed for over forty years." That's wrong, it was just 39 years. Did Farentino fumble his lines?

  • @minutemanIV I dont think so. He used a round figure (we all do) about events that are several years (in this case decades) in the past.

  • @cabbievonbump Also, there's a scene where Kirk wants to discuss matters in private with Ron O'Neal & Farentino on the bridge,so he orders this blond shipmate to leave the room. Kirk says to him "You !", and the guy quickly exits & heads towards the mess. In the mess, the guy says to his fellow shipmates, "I was just on the bridge, and they're scared. Jesus, we, the Germans and the Russians have finally done it. We're at war." That actor is Peter Vincent Douglas, the movie's producer & Kirk's son.

  • @cabbievonbump Like the 2000 years when we speak about the death of Jesus Christ on the cross.

  • I like the screaming engines.

  • Great movie. Thanks for posting these scenes.

  • Charles Durning is so fat that Jap bullets wouldn't have been able to penetrate him fully.

  • @minutemanIV Watch it. He's a decorated WWII vet, and fabulous actor. And he's not even half as fat as he became later in the decade.

  • @stableshadow I didn't know Durning was a WW2 vet. Hell, that makes all the difference. My granddad was a Royal Air Force pilot during WW2, so I have a special admiration for WW2 vets, be they Brit or Yank.

  • @minutemanIV My dad was a captain in the "Deutsche Luftwaffe" at the end of WW2, a squadron leader.

  • @mszs If your dad was a Luftwaffe squadron leader at the end of WW2, then he missed out on all the fun. The fun was at the start of the War, during the Battle of Britain, when your pilots tried to overwhelm the Royal Air Force pilots but failed. Maybe your dad and my granddad flew over the same patch of sky, ever thought of that?

  • @minutemanIV I didn't think of that. My dad was a pilot from the beginning of WW2 and had missions all over Europe and Africa. He flew as a fighter as well as transport pilot. Once he had crash landing leading to the discovery that the main fuel tank was filled with water! He told me that he flew everything except the ME262. That wasn't however his dream goal. When he started with flying he wanted to become a Lufthansa pilot, so he got the pilot training from the Luftwaffe.

  • This is my favorite movie of all time... no CGI effects! GREAT

    Thanx JerseyCaptain!!!!!

  • @GundamSlayerNeo

I saw this movie as a kid when I dreamed of being a fighter pilot. It kills Iron Eagle and Top Gun, both of which I loved.

  • @darthinfurnus Same here. I dreamed of being a Corsair II pilot, not the Tomcat pilot. (Sigh) My grades weren't good enough, though, for either college or the Academy. Closest I came to those birds is building models of them.

  • Yes, the Tomcat was my favorite plane also. Long before Top Gun came to the Silver Screen. Too bad they retired it...but that is progress for ya.

  • too bad you didn't let it run a tad bit more with the E-4 locating the Japaneese Fleet "Negative Radar Emissions" multiple surface contacts.................

  • Ahhh ... this movie is a classic :D This movie is the reason i went out and bought third party decals for this model Tomcat i am putting together. I wouldn't have anything other than the 84!

  • if they remake dis they should use the f117 nighthawk the f 35 jump jet or my favorite f23 black widow fighter.

  • @jemun223 Nope. If they remake it, use whichever airgroup the carrier has assigned to it. Hmmm, interesting question. Which carrier? Enterprise, Nimitz, Eisenhower, et al?

  • I love the little plume of smoke when the Tomcat engages the Zero with its 20mm cannon. LOL. If it was real life it would have shredded the Zero, like a machine gun shooting at paper.

    Tomcats forever.

  • I don't want a remake,and this is why(SPOILERS!):

    1. The Final Countdown's entire cast of exrtas were the actual USS Nimitz crew.

    2. The arial stunts were... REAL AIRPLANES(!) and not CGI.

    3. The "intellegently controlled" time storm that returned the Nimitz back to the exact moment it left the "present day" at the end never had an explanation, but for some reason I believe Hollywood would have some time traveling CGI alien ruining the ending in a crappy remake. Just my opinion.

  • Given a crappy, sappy product like "Pearl Harbor", which was made so recently, and then "Tora Tora Tora", which still ranks as THE definitive film on the Pearl Harbor attack (even though it was done in the 70s), I am inclined to agree with you dude. Amazing what they did with "Tora Tora Tora" back then, and totally embarrassing and irritating what they did with "Pearl Harbor".

  • @JerseyCaptain

Thanks, and I agree about "Pearl Harbor". Let's make sure that ET never ruins the mysterious ending of one of the best time travel movies ever.

like Lasky says"You may be the victims of some kind of a joke whether the Pentagon is behind it or the Kremlin, or some little green men from Mars, I promise you I'm as much in the dark about it as you are".

  • @JerseyCaptain..I couldn't agree more with both of you, Pearl Harbor was such a syrupy joke.....There IS a reason some movies haven't been remade (Bladerunner) and some great films like The Posiaden Adventure were remade and were CGI nightmare's....Take Kelly's Heroes with Eastwood and Savalas....the movie used REAL M4 Shermans and REAL Panzer Mark VI Tiger tanks.....you just CANT remake those movies and do it right....

  • @throbbin87 I can tell you like the REAL DEAL with effects, and thank you for including Sgt Kelly in the mix. For the "Oceans 11" fans of the old series and the new, all I can say is Kelly's Heroes are the "original" bank robbers that stole a "national treasure" with the help of some awesome hardware; "Woof! Woof!"

  • @SenseiJubei....thanks man, realism, even if you have to modify something to make it look real, means that people LOVE their craft, not just trying to make a quick buck!!

  • @throbbin87 Tiger #115 from "Kelly's Heroes" was such an awesome T-34 makeup job, it fooled me too! At least they didn't use "Battle Of The Bulge" Korean-era Pershing tanks as Panzers with British actors as Nazis. One thing is for sure; the Tiger makes one hell of a getaway car!

  • @throbbin87

The M4s were real enough, but not the Tigers. They were mock-ups on T34 chassis. The M4s were actually part of the Yugoslav army and were "rented" for the film - including many of the crews. At the time of the movie, there were no functioning Mark VI Tigers. I think that even today, there is only one in operating condition.

  • @mekozak....thanks for the info on the Sherman's, How much did they modify the T-34's?? because the T-34 has simple wheel, christie suspension and in the movie, like the real Mark VI (which was a BIG problem) that tank had interlocking road wheels, so they had to have changed wheel and track configuration too?

  • @mekozak....actually there are 6 Mark VI, Tiger I Tanks on display in the world, four are operational although only one is actually used that way. Bovington Military Museum, running Tiger, Saumur, France, operational, but an indoor exhibit, Viamoutiers, France, runs, but indoors, Kubinka Museum, Russia, same as above. US ARMY Proving grounds, Runs, but being repaired and a damaged non-op on in the lenino-snegiri museum in Russia.

  • @JerseyCaptain Jersey, you got that so right...they used tora tora tora clips in several movies.. The dumbing down of most movies today is sad with lame cgi effects and gratuitous sound affects to placate the 20 somethings..

  • @JerseyCaptain I agree, "Pearl Harbor" was a total waste of my time and money. I would prefer Tora Tora Tora to any other. They used real aircraft and payed close attention to the facts, unlike "Pearl Harbor". This movie is good too, due to the fact that they used real aircraft, and a real Nimitz Class carrier.

  • @JerseyCaptain Pearl Harbor was an over price love story plain and simple. I have to watch Tora Tora Tora.

  • @2199 I don't think there has ever been a more "no freakin' duh" concept than that. ROFL Yes, I know. But over-priced? Perhaps. Unnecessary and melodramatic? Surely.

  • @JerseyCaptain True that. True that.

  • I'd still like to see a remake but I see your point. CGI is not perfected by any means and Hollywood abuses it because they dont want to work hard anymore setting up camera shots and getting correct lighting. They just want to push a button and collect big at the box office.

  • @SenseiJubei It would be nice the Japanese Aircraft were more authentic.

  • @SenseiJubei

Don't forget they actually fired the cannon and shot an AIM-9 at a drone. It might sound cheesy but this movie helped steer me towards joining the Navy.

  • @SenseiJubei About #3 on your list (nine months ago from this post. In the book, it was Tydman Industries that set up the time trip.

  • @cabbievonbump Did'nt realize there was a book, but thanks for the info. Maybe I should quit reading blueprints and pick up a novel sometime! ;)

  • @SenseiJubei Your opinion on a remake of this movie is my opinion as well!!

Given all the silly talentless crap that has come out of Hollyweird for the past 10 or so years a remake would do this movie no justice whatsoever! I say HELL NO to a remake! I'll keep watching the best version...the original from 1980!

  • @SenseiJubei Agree 1000%

  • @SenseiJubei the movie was made in the 80's, there was no CGI

  • Whens the remake coming? I cant wait.

  • i'd love to see a remake of this movie...

  • 05:50 lol I bet that was not deliberate! It looks like the Tomcat was trying to copy the Zero's role, but it was too slow, so the Tomcat stalled while inverted.

  • jesus crist i thought you realised that this was a movie scene. and he probably stalled the roll th make sure the "zero" was out of his way before he dove, c'mon get a grip would ya?

  • @TheScrumpty Why would I believe that?

  • it was a movie scene man the "zero" would not have been able to get out of the tomcats way if it had not already cleared, watch it again real carefully, the roll went right to the point to where the tomcat pilot could see it was clear and he stopped it to look then continued, IT WAS A MOVIE SCENE and not worth anyone getting killed over a little restraint i think is very prudent

  • @TheScrumpty we can agree it was a movie scene. It just looks to me like the Zero slowly did a graceful roll, and the Tomcat tried to follow it (for no better reason than it would look good). You can see at 05:47 the Tomcat is slowed almost to a crawl even before he tries to execute the roll, and just runs out of energy half way through.

  • at least we agree it was shot for a movie, but speaking as a former tomcat pilot i would have done the same thing, i would have paused completing the maneuver to make sure the slower plane was out of my way before commiting myself to a maneuver that he would not be able to get out of my way once i performed it beleive me the tomcat can roll and and that pilot did not even come close to how fast it can roll when you want it to

  • @TheScrumpty you THINK that you are a pilot. Keep dreaming tomcat fanboy. The Tomcats are never comming back to US service. You are just a civilian boy with a military papa. And you ask him all these questions, then you apply it to youtube and use it for evil.

  • ok you said you were gonna piss me off about 2 weeks ago and i told you you couldn't but now you have, my father did serve and he flew the F-4 phantom in vietnam on 5 seperate cruises, and was shot down by enemy sams twice, the second time ended up as a pow, till the end of hostilities, now you can say whatever you want about me, but my father gave more than most, and your talking about my father is way far out of line, btw he died 5 years ago and cant defend himself here leave this alone man.

  • Okay...I won't tolerate cheap shots. *Blocked* Take your hostility elsewhere.

  • You don't use punctuation marks, periods at the end of your sentence's and don't use a capital i (I) as a noun. You don't use capital letters to begin your sentences, or for proper nouns. As an officer (commissioned or non) you would always write properly. Did you graduate High School? Jr. High? GED? Anything?

  • guess what i am 42 years old today and retired so i dont have to worry about that shit number one, number 2 if you have not noticed i do tend to write long detailed and complete answers here and only have 500 characters to do it in, so if the grammer gets missed i dont care, neither should you i am getting you the information i can in the space i can fit it into and yes i did graduate HS and college it is required for a fighter pilot to have a BS degree

  • Okay, "TheScrumpty"...that slam against "nineteenEcho" went too far. I don't know him from Adam, but I know you could have been a bit more level in your reply. Even if his comment was a bit pointed and insulting (which was also wrong). *Blocked*

  • Dude, technically you are right. But is there any need to be insulting to the guy? Isn't there more than enough of that going on here on YouTube, much less the rest of the internet?

  • he was slow but it it looked to me like he still had plenty of energy and if the sound was accurate when he started he did not have a lot of power on the engines, like he did at the bottom of the dive when he was in was in zone 5 burner

  • Unnecessarily rude. Relax. The dude has a right to comment. Again...as I said earlier, *blocked*. I have no tolerance for sarcasm in the comments of my videos. Move on.

  • When I think of F-14 movies, I always think of this, not Top Gun. Nowadays, they'd do this scene in total CG and it would look TERRIBLE. I am soooo glad this was made. It's right up there with the greatest in aviation movie classics. Love it!

  • Ahhhhh I loved this movie as a kid the F-14 was what got me hooked onto aviation....its a gorgeaous plane I love it If I had to stock my Naval Air Forces with two Fighters it would be The F-14 and the Su-33

  • Two of the greatest fighter aircraft ever made... the A6M2 Zero (yes, I know they're modified AT-6's) and the F-14A Tomcat. Yes, they were costly to maintain & fly, but unmatched in its role as a Fleet Defense Interceptor. Give me a Turkey any day instead of the Super Hornet...

  • 7:34 OWNED!

  • Flying Cadillac Ahhhh The 80s Greed was good, and the famous high maintenence Tomcat, those were the days f we could only go back n time. Just take lots of grease for the Cat....B

  • Great Flick, They really need to remake it. If it is remade, have the F-14s reprise their role and use real zeros instead of modified T-6 Texans! Still, a great flick! I love the roar of the F-14 jet engines!

  • "Hey fox, that woke them up" God, I love this movie... even if that liberal scumbag Martin Sheen is in it.

  • even a normal pistol coud have penetraded the body of this guy at 1:33 so a board machinegun of a plane simply killed both

  • What I cannot understand is how the second Tomcat downed the Zero with an AIM-9b Sidewinder. If the missile is heat seeking, how much heat could a radial engine from the Zero throw off to attract the missile?

  • I was a Navy Ordnanceman. We tested the sidewinders by turning the power on to the aircraft and waving a flashlight in front of the sidewinder. It is so heat sensitive, it would follow the heat from the flashlight.

  • I remember that now. On the carrier during Desert Storm, pre-launch checks. The Ordie would wave a flashlight back and forth in front of the missile...

  • it's not only a heat seeker, it follows the target locked from the Tomcat

  • @JFDhater Every aircraft creates heat. Look at the E-2C, Propeller, but it has to produe heat to let the engine do its thing.

  • Michael Douglas is the Captain of the new Super Carrier . Martin Sheen is the Efficiency Expert on board. they head out and meet the same vortex. Where the Super carrier meets the Nimitz carrier, just after the Nimtz's launch Michael meets Kirk, Charlie meets Martin. They all recognize each other. Immediately there after, a double vortex grabs both ships .Sending the Nimitz back to 1980 & the Super Carrier back to Rome, beset by a thousand Roman ships. The Roman ships regretfully attack.

  • Michael Douglas does not play the Captain - it was Kirk Douglas, Michael's father.

  • @Dakers11 CORRECTION! Michael Douglas is the captain of the NEW Super Carrier & Charlie Sheen is the Efficiency Expert on the NEW Super Carrier. The same vortex grabs the Super Carrier. Which takes them to the point right when the Nimitz is getting ready to Launch against the Japanese. They end up along side each other. That is where Michael meets Kirk and Charlie meets Martin. They are both the sons, but at a later date in their lives. Thats how the fathers recognize their sons & the situation.

  • best way to kill an entire formation of zeros with an f-14 just break the sound barrier in the middle of them

  • How come everyone is forgetting about radar targeting and tracking?

  • Are you trained and experienced fighter pilots? Just wondering. I loved this movie for the thought it invoked, not thinking it could ever happen, but seeing some of the comments, just wanted to know if you from hence you speak, or is it all theory and video game experience? The F4 is only in service with other than US forces. The F14 was only sold to the Iranians and those are trashed, no other country was able to purchase them.

  • No. However, there are experienced pilots who have replied to this or the other half of the video presentation. You may want to seek them out.

  • No i am not any expert. im just an aviation buff is all. read a few books many years ago and the tomcat has always been my favorite bird.

i just felt the other guy was talking out of his butt. probably should have just stayed out of it. my appologies to Jerseycaptain and everyone else.

    Rayven

  • i think you should. the tomcat had to be put through its paces prior to adoption by the us navy. the slat winged f-4 was used in air to air trails. which has better maneuverability and less speed.

the the f-14 out performed in all areas. offering an over 20% increase in all areas

    acceleration

    g-force

    climb rate

    maneuverability (almost 30% there)

    turn radius was increased 40%

it was designed to OUT perform the f-4. the birds are still operational i would assume they are better.

  • There are different kinds of maneuverability. IE A FW-190A-4 was "more maneuverable" than the Spit V even though it couldn't "out turn" it. Was more responsive, far superior roll rate, and had amazing touch at high speeds. But it's wing loading was terrible for "turning". The Spit had it all day over the 190. They stopped designing planes for "turning" a long time ago and were happy to sacrifice turning ability for speed. F-14 can do everything better than a F4 at high altitude.

  • you throw in distance. im sure the effective range of the tomcats cannon is much greater than the guns of that time.

means the tomcat can stay further back and not be forced into a high g turn and still stay on the zero as it makes its turn. at least long enough to get a burst into him.

so saying a tomcat can never turn with a zero ever is BS

You should read Robert Shaws book on acm. i did in 1990. still have it on the shelf

    so check it out dipshit

  • it would also depend on the turn the zero is making. i have seen (in real life) a tomcat maintain formation with a wildcat. if a tomcat where totally incapabable of turning with an aircraft like due to speed issues then it would not have been able to make that turn as they came around for that pass in real life.

  • look the question was cana tomcat fly slow enough to engage a zero. yes it can. however a real pilot would not engate a zero in a knife fight with a tomcat.

they would use their superior speed to make a fast gunrun pass in essence doing the same thing chanault taught the tigers to do over chine in 40.

a p-40b can not turn with a zero also. but it can make a dive attack at high speed and use momentum to reaquire an altitude advantage.

the tomcat would do the same on in the horizantal

  • F-14

Stall speed, power off: at 52,357 Ib(23,749kg)110 kts (127 mph; 204

    km/h)

and a zero is max speed of 350 MPH / 305 KT

assuming the zero is only doing 280 miles an hour. the tomcat has more than a 140 mph to play with and still maintain maneuverability without stalling.

i would say that it is extremely possible for a tomcat to turn with a zero.

  • But for the fact that experienced F-14 pilots HAVE responded in this and the other half of the video presentation on this movie, and verified that it is indeed possible, and discussed the mechanics of it.

That coupled with the very obvious film footage (which is definitely not doctored; nor could it be digitally-rendered, given the time this movie was made) which shows two real F-14s doing maneuvers with two mock-up Zeros (using equivalent engine types).

    Your point, therefore, is moot.

  • Taking missiles out of the equation, an F-14 could spend all day in a dogfight with a zero. F-14 wouldn't go below 700mph to stay maneuverable and a zero won't exceed 250mph in a dogfight. F-14 hasn't a snowball's chance in hell staying on a zero's six. F-14 would probably run out of ammo missing it due to the speed and maneuverability differences.

  • I forgot to add of course the Zero hasn't a snowball's chance of shooting the F-14 down. In fact, the puny ballistics on the Zero 20mm cannon (all 120 rounds of it) would hit like a spit wad on a jet going 700mph if he was even lucky enough to make contact. This is an entertaining match-up though.

  • And you've flown an F-14 in mock aerial dogfighting, or in military wargame exercises, in a way that can confirm this fact?

  • I love the part while watching the Zero...you see the F-14 came in through the clouds behind him.

  • Yeah even though it would be make believe it still would be fun to watch. We never got the chance to shoot them all down. Damn storm came back and threw them back to 1980(?).

  • i wish they could make a movie, where 20,100 modern U.S military soldiers with modern tanks, planes and helicopters went back in time and punched the shit outta the nazis and japs

  • Plus the F-15 is a fixed wing aircraft. Wings do not sweep like the F-14.

  • Dakers: that's a good idea =) James Cemaron was the directof of the film ? (the realisator, xD) I'll learn more a=every days...

  • It's amazing that the tomcats are as maneuverable as they are. They weigh more then a fully loaded B17 bomber.
