The cut is so clean because they sopped the camera at the last second and replaced the actress with a doll. They then started the camera again where the executioner cut of the dolls head.
I bet Mary had wished her beheading was carried out so cleanly. The first blow missed her neck and struck her in the back of the head, the second blow left her head still attached by sinew, at which her executioner then used the axe as a saw....gruesome.
They never did their research, did they? It took at least two blows to sever her head, according to eyewitness reports. After the first blow she was heard to jmutter the words "sweet Jesus"
There is a pause just before the ax falls and its evident that there she was replaced by a dummy. Plus there is no blood and the head seems to be very light.
@michp38 there is no blood because of a super kl33n cut and head is moving like it's light because it was shot at more frames per second then the usual 16.
Got to love the cut that happens right in the middle there so they could put in the dummy of the actress so she isn't really, you know, beheaded and stuff.
You know, you DO got to love the cut...that's the first time that technique was ever used. You wouldn't have a whole lot- heck, you probaly wouldn't have any- of the modern special effects if no one experimented with it back then.
Some credit this with being the first horror movie ever made. Rather it is or not, who knows. For it's time (1895) it is pretty revolutionary. Awesome footage, thanks for posting.
its a fake!

Hmm fake!! Not!! It's real!! What is fake is her beheading in 1598... (I think that's the year?) at the hands of Queen Elizabeth. She
Really lived another 297 years, then to be executed on this old footage for everyone to see !!!!
