what they need to do is make a flow valve for the exhaust like they have on the C5 vette. that way the computer can control exactly how much back pressure you are pushing and can adjust depending on engine load and rpm. that would be the best way to do it. i know many super cars have this. Not aware of any bikes that do though.
@enatc out more flow = peak and like other dude said more compression means more torque... but honestly ... i dont think normal people can see 1-2 hp more or torque
he must have already had it loosened, because i assure you they do not come out that easily. And yanking on the pliers does not work. You actually have to grab hold of the insert with pliers really tight, and with the other hand bang on the plier handles with a hammer to bang it out slowly.

Having the insert in claims to give you more torque in lower rpm ranges. Stunters usually leave the insert in.

With the DB-killer taken out it will provide you a bit more HP. It is a really small difference. The air flows out of the exhaust more easily.
