  • They didn't all die, but most did. The pilot misjudged the landing and the left rear set of lending gear got caught on the fencing surrounding the deck, once the pilot decreased his rotor speed the helictopter got caught in the draft from the shift and flipped backwards into the water.

  • oh dear

  • It is not a CH-47 Chinook, it is a CH-46 Sea Knight used by the Marines and Navy and yes they all died...

  • @specwargru No... they did not ALL die, I dont know where you get your facts. I met two of the surviors not long ago, they are both retired from the Marine Corps and one of them is currently an instructor at Camp Pendleton.

  • @MrHuffmeister I was Active duty in a Harrier Squadron at the time of this event and that was the story we had heard. Glad there were survivors. Unlike the collision they had between a 46 and a Cobra over Pendleton before our float in 96. That was another terrible disaster. The fact that it is a CH46 and not a CH57 still stands though.

  • @specwargru Yeah I'm glad not all was lost, still a very unfortunate event. You were in the Harrier community? What squadron were you a part of?

  • did they die or what
