I'm grinning reading your comment. I think that therapists who work in pediatric centers tend to talk that way in general! Also, since Joe is essentially nonverbal, a lot of people speak as if he has difficulty understanding.
Joe actually understands normal adult conversation fluently in Spanish as well as English! I suspect he has a smattering of other languages as well - he likes to find Teletubbies or Blues Clues or nursery rhymes on YouTube in Japanese, French, and Russian!
