@RTotalwar2011 No i believe this is rather accurate, you see the spartans only held on so long because they limited fighting the persians to a man-to-man style of fight, which was the forte of the spartans, who were much stonger one-on-one. Otherwise if the pass were mile(s) wide then the Spartans would have been succombed easily by being out numbered N (lots, or copeous) to 1
First: The Spartans fought in a battle formation called phallanx. This was when the spartans put the spears in front of the enemy, and when a persian arrived he was not fighting one man, but a great number of spears. Second: The Spartans and allied forces had enough soldiers (~5000) to make a line strong enough to keep the persians away for three days.
@RTotalwar2011 yes, i understand, i realize that i didnt word that quite correctly. I meant to say the chose the narrowness of the pass so they would not be flanked.
Why do you say that? Spartans where flanked. They where defending two passes, but the 1,000 greeks that leonidas put in the second pass ran as the inmortals had the way discovered.
@RTotalwar2011 Ah! Actually, the common version of the story is that they were not defending the second pass for the Persains didn't know about it until a traitor told them for money.
GET IT RIGHT!!! it was the last stand of the spartans so the greeks could successfully escape and regroup. and also, many greeks first defended the pass but when the one army defending the flanking rout retreated fearing for their city state the greeks needed to escape and the spartans offered to stay and guard the pass. since they did the battle of Platea happened and the persians got whooped by 10,000 spartans leading 30,000 other greeks. So yeah, kinda everyone was right for the most part.
yea, there were way more that 300men defending that pass, also Spartans were so heavily armored that the cheap Persian weapons couldn't penetrate their armor,
No, you're fucking stupid. So is that fucking movie. Yes the Spartans were great warriors and they had tremendous morale, but their strength lied in the phalanx which involved heavily armored soldiers packed tightly, presenting a powerful wall of spears to the enemy. I don't care how strong your body and will power are or how gallant and swift you are. You don't beat thousands of other well trained soldiers by jumping around with swords and preforming acrobatic moves.
@Limbach17 umm thats what i said? they didnt have heavy armor..a shield a helmet and a spear isnt heavy stuff, well yes it kidna is but it kinda is not
@riseavengdsevnfold Spartans wore bronze breastplates and greaves . They also carries the sword(Xiphos) ,Spear (Doru),Shield (Aspis) and the chopper (kopis). ^^
Its is still an absolutely awesome vid though, i really love the realism of the troops. U really accurately got the shields sign right. It was close enough. I am not so sure about the uniform though. But still awesome
the video is inaccurate, there were not exactly and not just 300 spartans. The spartans had some more troops with them like missiles or javelin throwers.
right to all your retards who think they are macedon, look up on your history, the spartants used that symbol on their shields, not the macedons. thats just some bullshit the total war series put in, dont believe everything a game does, the unit i used is a mod, which a designer made, i downloaded it to be used in this movie, cos its the most accurate account of a spartan
word δουλεια (work).δουλος was a "worker".sometimes he remained a "worker" for ever, but many times, he coylg regain his freedom.
"σκλαβος" was someone who hadnt any rights.he was a prisoner of war who had to work forever and live forever in captivity.
helots was a 3rd different thing. helots were the old ahaians who lived in old sparta, before the dorians come from epirus, to peloponesse and take over sparta. the old spartans, the ahaians (like king menelaos) became sklaves of the
dorians. but they were entire families. so, the spartans allowed them to have a house and to live like δουλοι, not like σκλαβοι. but anytime sparta need helots to serve the spartan soldiers, then the helots coyld easily become from δουλοι,σκλαβοι...
spartans were cruel to helots. but if they didnt be like that, then the helots would revolt and sparta could be devastated for ever. because helots were 10 times more than spartans
@siyco90 tbh the Spartans actual used animals painted on their shields. One spartan painted a fly on his shield and someone asked him why. He said when the enemy is close that that fly will appear to be a lion and he will fear it. (history channel)
wow learn your facts people there were about 100 over all soldiers with about 700 thesbians the battle was not the only way there was a small road that xerxes had seen and transported 10000 men to surround the spartans/thesbians, there was also a naval battle and it really was for Athens fighting for the burning of a perisan capital the persians were actually good but they wanted vengence for this one thing ok?

@InfamousCrack123 the helots were slaves. They were forced to till the fields etc. and sometimes fight (although they usually fought through promises of freedom rather than any greater form of compulsion). Don't delude yourself about the Spartans look at it more objectively
Not bad, but btw, the persians didnt invade because they wanted more land, they did it as payback for greece attacking and leveling numerous cities of persia, so persia retalliated by the battle of thermopylae, then leveling most of athens, the persians never did attack sparta, only thermopylae, you forgot, there was actually 4000 greeks, and 300 spartan soldiers at the battle for thermopylae, then there was the persian army, witch some guesses reach 3 million while others around 300.000
though technically if you go by traditional history the date of the battle ranges in between august and september 480 BC, the months of the Spartan Calendar are made differently than the modern English one, so the months are actually 100 years more recent than we think, and the months are and years go a bit off in mediterranean history until the coming of Julius Caesar.
the persians wernt issued armour like the spartans they had to get there own armaments and most of them were slaves from all over the persian empire plus spartans were an extremely barbaric nation bein brought up as warriors and taken away from there parents at 3 yrs and put into a 'herd' of children were bulling was encouraged to 'toughen' them up, that only happened if the father liked the child or otherwise he would hav killed it by leaving it in the wild
good question hav a point. i suppose most of the celts werent actually they fought amongst themselves about family fueds wich is a good reason people like the romans were the worst cause they conquered the world and treated people like shit just cause they could
spartans left their child to die if they thought they were weak so they would not waste resources on him. it was said something like 1 in 3 new born males and about 10% of females were left to die.
kk. But this vid said three days, so no need to put negative thumbs at my comment since it is true>holding a pass for three days and dying then isnt much of a great deed.
even 3 days is much if its one to a hundred, LOTS of strategy , strength , and will power needs to be mixed to acomplish that, dont thinkany1 theese days could manage it, its HUGE and a great deed ,even 3 days
They just planted there army of almost 1000 men in a chokepoint, and used there superior warriors to deny the Persians entrance. But certainly they must have some losses to. And numbers at the Persian side didnt really matter, since battles of 20 vs 20 ore so could only be fought in the pass because of the size.
would u like to fight all day never sleeping and getting almost no food for 3 days getting splattered with other mens blood and worring ull neva c ur family again? then tell us 3 days isnt long
They got rests in between, in which they could eat and drink. If one can rest he does not needs to sleep, especially if he is an elite veteran spartan hoplite, chosen from the best of the best warriors from the world. I think they knew they were going to die instead of crying about it.
there is some thing i do not get.if xerxes found a road behind the spartans, instead of attacking them from both sides, why didn't he just send his whole army through it to athens with out the greeks knowing?
because greek scouts saw that the persions were coming that way and some of the persian scouts reported that theyve seen greeks running around up there. there were troups up there but they chose to run away.
Both ways where guarded by several thousand greeks.
But the guards in the "upper way" in the mountains got tricked to retreat to their hometowns as they believed their homes where under attack. So in fact Xerxes sent troops along that way. The greeks at thermophylae would have been slaughtered (surrounded). So they descided to retreat most of the host, and impose as being still a few thousand, while they roughly only where only 1000 and sacrisfied themselves to allow the retreat of the rest.
because if xerxes took the path to athens he would have met athenians ready to defend their city and the 300 spartans and the 700 thespians and 400 thebans who were with the spartans (wich many people dont know about)would have came around and followed them down the path and the persians even though they were a larger force would have been surrounded. The persians actually played it very smart and patient but ofcourse were eventually defeated a few years later.
now if you started reading this dont stop its really scary!ok send this to five other videos in 143 minutes. when you are done press F6 and your crushes name will appear on the screen in big letters this is weird because it does work. If you break this chance you wont have a crush in the next five years
About the Lambda, they used because the Spartans descended from the Lacaedmonians.
And the 300 were leading 7000 other greeks. After the first day, Leonidas sent back 2000; and in the final day there were just the 300 Spartans and 1000 Thespians.
as i just stated the A was not used by macedonia, it was infact used by the greek states, and spartans, the 1.5 version of rome total war is historical incorrect with this. This is why i am using a historical correct mod on rome total war, so the units are how they should be! the A is greek!
Well, you are right, about the use of the A, but take on mind that is not an "a" is an "l", a lambda, and is the letter of ELLAS, maybe is that the reason of the use of that letter on the shields, or maybe in the case of the macedonians is Lexandros, or alexander, is a supossition only ;), ah by the way, nice video ;)
o you are refering to their shields? actually RTW is historical incorrect, this mod is correct, the spartans used that A on their shields, not macediona
Hey just like to make an announcement, im sorry for keeping you waiting for so long. i Promised you another battle months and months ago. I have been have alot of troubles, especially with my movie editor! However i can assure you that the 10,000 spartants battle is closer to release than ever before! so thank you all for waiting, and again sorry for all you who have been waiting patiently. This movie has no lagg to!!! :D
at the end persians can not afort any more caseultis so they finish them with arows. The adds for persia vs greece was 50 to 1 and more, it was not only spartans but a feuw ather greek all over in small nombers that won grade battles .
Themistoklis came up with the battle plan and plus the fight in the sea was 50 to 1 , Athens had 300 ships only and distroyd the persians ships ,
third day spartans stay and the rest of the greek left ,at the beginning of the war leolidas got killed , but moral did not brake the killing number was unknown but more then 30.000.
the movie 300 is a great in fact i have it butits not 100 percent historicaly acurate spartans wore heavy armour their were alot of other greeks to andthe immortals didn't look like mutant samurais but the movie is good 5 stars (plz send map)
yeah but ofcourse it's not hirtorical correct, the movie was made from a comic book. That's also why everything looks sow weird and in fact the 300 spartans didn't had to fight 1 million but that doesn't make it less cool
first the immortals attacked then leonidas felt and only a less than 15 spartans left alive and they got into narrowest corner of pass then they launched arrows those spartans alive were trying to protect the body of leonidas but they didn't so xerxes ordered to fix leonidas's head on the large stick. persians lost nearly 20000 men and with that more than 10000 immortals xerxes also lost 2 of his brothers.
Actually.... The Greeks had nearby navy and a few thousand men from Athens and possibly Corinth. Either way, It wasn't just Leonidas' bodyguard of 300. The navy and men we strategically placed-and got pwned.
Let us have the glory p.s. they had around 2000 Greek soldiers including the 300 Spartans and remember: 300 WAS BASED OFF OF A GRAPHIC NOVEL (the movie of course)
300 really acsisted (dislectic :P) but its very a push-up brah story :P:P probably they were outumbered but they ere with around 2000 against 10.000 and then (what they say) a small passege doesnt count for numbers its about how you fight
Thermopylae did very little except slaughter 7000 Greeks. There was a force of about 7000 Greeks total and there were also Thespians involved in the final stand on the third day on the hillock. After, Ahasaurus went on to complete a very successful campaign that resulted in the destruction of Athens.
haha, a very successful campaign indeed...that resulted in the Persians withdrawing from Greece and abandoning their interests in Europe, that's all they wanted to begin with. Look at the size of the Persian Empire in that era compared to the city states of Greece, how embarassing to have your ass handed to you like that...now I understand where the theory of suicide bombing comes from.
it wasn't that campaign. that defeat didn't come until a year later and Ahasaurus wasn't even in Greece, he was on his way there to continue, but the general he left in charge didn't follow orders. for a year the Greeks were dominated by Persia, and only won b/c the Persian general wanted to go home and had fought the posting. Sry, but the Greeks definitely did not "kick ass"
Too bad it was an illegal war that went against the laws of Sparta by a commander who thought he had a destiny because of the Delphi. Not unlike Iraq, really. Remember Herodotus: Thermopylae was considered by almost all Greeks an unmitigated disaster.
reenactor19th you are an idiot leonidas thought it was his destiney and after Thermopylae the persians lost to the 10,000 spartans and 30,000 greeks and kicked the persians asses plus only 300 spartans and 700 thesbians remained even after ephilates and they still kicked persians ass until they figured out to use arrows again
i didn't say the spartans couldn't fight. i said it was an illegal war, and it was. you didn't even touch my argument, you just spouted nonsense somebody told you. see me again when you're worthy and have informed yourself.
very cool and all, as a visual representation of the film 300 or of Miller's graphic novel but it isn't very historically accurate. 300 does not attempt to portray the battle as it really happened, so don't take Miller's word for it: do some reading on the battle to see how different the real thing actually was. (for example, the 300 were actually backed by more than 1000 troops; the last stand was not finished off by arrows but up close)r)
and in real life spartans didnt fight in speedos... they had Corinthian helms (Not that fake shit from 300) They also had longer spears and leather armors.
you'r probably right about the spears but their armour was definitely bronze at the time and it would be a multi-piece one with long greaves and arm-braces, chestplates, shield and helms. truth be told even though the helms may not be too accurate, they do look cool as hell in 300.
this isnt dark messiah. this is rome total war. and where did u dld the freecamera from?? and yep, it was pretty accurate. tho u didnt say how the thespians stayed back with the spartans as well. ;)

good question hav a point. i suppose most of the celts werent actually they fought amongst themselves about family fueds wich is a good reason people like the romans were the worst cause they conquered the world and treated people like shit just cause they could
whowantsabighug 3 years ago
Yeah your right. I think its because they were Pagans, where there is religion there is war and persecution.
FightForChangeNow 3 years ago
dont say pagans it makes u sound like some wierd crusader knight whos scared of multi god religions. HAIL TO TANIT!!!
whowantsabighug 3 years ago
I was complementing paganism because it is one of the few like budhism that doesn't breed violence, war, and persecution.

spartans left their child to die if they thought they were weak so they would not waste resources on him. it was said something like 1 in 3 new born males and about 10% of females were left to die.

3 days is not very long
MasterofPainfulDeath 3 years ago
3 days isnt the real thing, this guy just looked at the movie and based the vid on that, they held guard there months , and it was one on a hundred
AlienFromMars007 3 years ago
kk. But this vid said three days, so no need to put negative thumbs at my comment since it is true>holding a pass for three days and dying then isnt much of a great deed.
MasterofPainfulDeath 3 years ago
even 3 days is much if its one to a hundred, LOTS of strategy , strength , and will power needs to be mixed to acomplish that, dont thinkany1 theese days could manage it, its HUGE and a great deed ,even 3 days
AlienFromMars007 3 years ago
They just planted there army of almost 1000 men in a chokepoint, and used there superior warriors to deny the Persians entrance. But certainly they must have some losses to. And numbers at the Persian side didnt really matter, since battles of 20 vs 20 ore so could only be fought in the pass because of the size.
MasterofPainfulDeath 3 years ago
would u like to fight all day never sleeping and getting almost no food for 3 days getting splattered with other mens blood and worring ull neva c ur family again? then tell us 3 days isnt long
whowantsabighug 3 years ago
They got rests in between, in which they could eat and drink. If one can rest he does not needs to sleep, especially if he is an elite veteran spartan hoplite, chosen from the best of the best warriors from the world. I think they knew they were going to die instead of crying about it.

there is some thing i do not get.if xerxes found a road behind the spartans, instead of attacking them from both sides, why didn't he just send his whole army through it to athens with out the greeks knowing?
carthagertw 3 years ago
because greek scouts saw that the persions were coming that way and some of the persian scouts reported that theyve seen greeks running around up there. there were troups up there but they chose to run away.
mohawkman2006 3 years ago
Both ways where guarded by several thousand greeks.
But the guards in the "upper way" in the mountains got tricked to retreat to their hometowns as they believed their homes where under attack. So in fact Xerxes sent troops along that way. The greeks at thermophylae would have been slaughtered (surrounded). So they descided to retreat most of the host, and impose as being still a few thousand, while they roughly only where only 1000 and sacrisfied themselves to allow the retreat of the rest.
Jiyukan 3 years ago
because if xerxes took the path to athens he would have met athenians ready to defend their city and the 300 spartans and the 700 thespians and 400 thebans who were with the spartans (wich many people dont know about)would have came around and followed them down the path and the persians even though they were a larger force would have been surrounded. The persians actually played it very smart and patient but ofcourse were eventually defeated a few years later.

would that have been theban hoplites or sacred band?

About the Lambda, they used because the Spartans descended from the Lacaedmonians.
And the 300 were leading 7000 other greeks. After the first day, Leonidas sent back 2000; and in the final day there were just the 300 Spartans and 1000 Thespians.
(forget my spelling and grammar, i'm brazillian)

as i just stated the A was not used by macedonia, it was infact used by the greek states, and spartans, the 1.5 version of rome total war is historical incorrect with this. This is why i am using a historical correct mod on rome total war, so the units are how they should be! the A is greek!
siyco90 3 years ago
Oww ok :) You got 'Spartan Troops' @ RTW at the Greaak army.. so.. NVM :)
vcwsmit 3 years ago
Well, you are right, about the use of the A, but take on mind that is not an "a" is an "l", a lambda, and is the letter of ELLAS, maybe is that the reason of the use of that letter on the shields, or maybe in the case of the macedonians is Lexandros, or alexander, is a supossition only ;), ah by the way, nice video ;)
xpidude 3 years ago
why do you think that?

Because it is...I recognise the weird A from Rome total war of my own. Why don't you take Greece in this battle?!

siyco90 3 years ago
Lol how gay, that ain't sparta, that's macedon from RTW xD
vcwsmit 3 years ago
o you are refering to their shields? actually RTW is historical incorrect, this mod is correct, the spartans used that A on their shields, not macediona
siyco90 3 years ago
Hey just like to make an announcement, im sorry for keeping you waiting for so long. i Promised you another battle months and months ago. I have been have alot of troubles, especially with my movie editor! However i can assure you that the 10,000 spartants battle is closer to release than ever before! so thank you all for waiting, and again sorry for all you who have been waiting patiently. This movie has no lagg to!!! :D
siyco90 3 years ago
at the end persians can not afort any more caseultis so they finish them with arows. The adds for persia vs greece was 50 to 1 and more, it was not only spartans but a feuw ather greek all over in small nombers that won grade battles .
Themistoklis came up with the battle plan and plus the fight in the sea was 50 to 1 , Athens had 300 ships only and distroyd the persians ships ,
HellonearthKratos 3 years ago
the video is so coll garde job .
about the comments lol
there were 300 spartans + 700 ather greeks
the first day they kill 30.000
second day the kill 30.000
third day spartans stay and the rest of the greek left ,at the beginning of the war leolidas got killed , but moral did not brake the killing number was unknown but more then 30.000.

the movie 300 is a great in fact i have it butits not 100 percent historicaly acurate spartans wore heavy armour their were alot of other greeks to andthe immortals didn't look like mutant samurais but the movie is good 5 stars (plz send map)
DarthNithilues 4 years ago
yeah but ofcourse it's not hirtorical correct, the movie was made from a comic book. That's also why everything looks sow weird and in fact the 300 spartans didn't had to fight 1 million but that doesn't make it less cool

they fought 3 days and third day they fell
first the immortals attacked then leonidas felt and only a less than 15 spartans left alive and they got into narrowest corner of pass then they launched arrows those spartans alive were trying to protect the body of leonidas but they didn't so xerxes ordered to fix leonidas's head on the large stick. persians lost nearly 20000 men and with that more than 10000 immortals xerxes also lost 2 of his brothers.

TxTechRox123 4 years ago
Actually.... The Greeks had nearby navy and a few thousand men from Athens and possibly Corinth. Either way, It wasn't just Leonidas' bodyguard of 300. The navy and men we strategically placed-and got pwned.
lordrez 4 years ago
it'ts not all like the movie.
as Lordres says they got reinforcings of the great Greek navy and 7000 warriors from Athens.
pwner9999 4 years ago
yeah that history channel special. they dident show the navy in the movie
smakabitch 4 years ago
Let us have the glory p.s. they had around 2000 Greek soldiers including the 300 Spartans and remember: 300 WAS BASED OFF OF A GRAPHIC NOVEL (the movie of course)
rjkillakat 4 years ago
300 really acsisted (dislectic :P) but its very a push-up brah story :P:P probably they were outumbered but they ere with around 2000 against 10.000 and then (what they say) a small passege doesnt count for numbers its about how you fight

Thermopylae did very little except slaughter 7000 Greeks. There was a force of about 7000 Greeks total and there were also Thespians involved in the final stand on the third day on the hillock. After, Ahasaurus went on to complete a very successful campaign that resulted in the destruction of Athens.
reenactor19th 4 years ago
haha, a very successful campaign indeed...that resulted in the Persians withdrawing from Greece and abandoning their interests in Europe, that's all they wanted to begin with. Look at the size of the Persian Empire in that era compared to the city states of Greece, how embarassing to have your ass handed to you like that...now I understand where the theory of suicide bombing comes from.
TxTechRox123 4 years ago
it wasn't that campaign. that defeat didn't come until a year later and Ahasaurus wasn't even in Greece, he was on his way there to continue, but the general he left in charge didn't follow orders. for a year the Greeks were dominated by Persia, and only won b/c the Persian general wanted to go home and had fought the posting. Sry, but the Greeks definitely did not "kick ass"
reenactor19th 3 years ago
Too bad it was an illegal war that went against the laws of Sparta by a commander who thought he had a destiny because of the Delphi. Not unlike Iraq, really. Remember Herodotus: Thermopylae was considered by almost all Greeks an unmitigated disaster.
reenactor19th 4 years ago
reenactor19th you are an idiot leonidas thought it was his destiney and after Thermopylae the persians lost to the 10,000 spartans and 30,000 greeks and kicked the persians asses plus only 300 spartans and 700 thesbians remained even after ephilates and they still kicked persians ass until they figured out to use arrows again
DarthNithilues 4 years ago
i didn't say the spartans couldn't fight. i said it was an illegal war, and it was. you didn't even touch my argument, you just spouted nonsense somebody told you. see me again when you're worthy and have informed yourself.

Aww..I prefer 300 den dis boring stuff
Gerard167 4 years ago
very cool and all, as a visual representation of the film 300 or of Miller's graphic novel but it isn't very historically accurate. 300 does not attempt to portray the battle as it really happened, so don't take Miller's word for it: do some reading on the battle to see how different the real thing actually was. (for example, the 300 were actually backed by more than 1000 troops; the last stand was not finished off by arrows but up close)r)
KIKO755 4 years ago
and in real life spartans didnt fight in speedos... they had Corinthian helms (Not that fake shit from 300) They also had longer spears and leather armors.
decimuscarrerus 4 years ago
you'r probably right about the spears but their armour was definitely bronze at the time and it would be a multi-piece one with long greaves and arm-braces, chestplates, shield and helms. truth be told even though the helms may not be too accurate, they do look cool as hell in 300.
KIKO755 4 years ago
they didnt have longer spears! and they did wear a small leg robe with a bronzebreast plate
