king george may be mad but he was a faithful husband
europe is plagued with unpleasant and abusive monarchs. no wonder why they suffered for such violent revulsions. and yet here we are in this tiny island, (separated from the petty wars in europe) prospered with the leadership of our bright and compassionate kings and queens.
while european monarchs hid in their lavish palaces away from the public, our monarchs even decided to stay at buckingham palace located right in the middle of the city
@williamparky I'd already bought the King's speech from HMV when I found out that if I'd just gone to Sainsbury's I'd not only get it cheaper, but with this film free too.
"In 1788 King George into the 28th year of his glorious reign..." A glorious time that was indeed. At this time the British constitution was at its best. The King, the House of Lords and the House of Commons were each other's check's and balances. Today the government is all-powerful, seeing that it must have a majority in the House of Commons in order to rule, the sovereign no longer interferes in politics and the House of Lords have lost their right to veto bills.
Back then it was considered quite acceptable for unelected institutions to hold checks and balances over each other- even the House of Commons was not democratically elected in any real way before 1832.
However, since the Budget of 1912, you would need democratic legitimacy in all three institutions to have valid checks and balances operating between all 3 institutions- the Queen is an advisor to the House of Commons and the Government is/are effectively the leaders of the Commons.
Ok... dude.... like.... luxurious luxuries--- thats a tad bit repetitious. You're just jealous you don't get 1.2% of Great Britains tax dollars for your palaces and "luxurious luxuries." Perhaps if you were to pay an "English Speaking tax", you would be able to communicate in an appropriate manner. One that could be understood by "English Speaking" people... You're just jealous that you don't have a loving caring Monarch For Life representing you. Get a job. Buy an English book. Colonist......
Our Monarchy has always been interesting. In this rapid change world, we have atleast something that we all can take for granted: Our noble Monarchy...

God save this "figure head" that takes 1.2% of all tax dollars for her palaces and luxurious luxuries.
You Canadians sure do know how to take it on the chin by the red coats. Kudos to the British for the best brain washing effort on the northern colonists in the new world...
P.S. Do you know the British charge you an English speaking tax? My god We Americans fought back and blew the heads off the British for taxing our breakfast.
I dont think you know what you are talking about-you know how much the British monarchy costs each person a year-the equivant of 35 cents-for the stability and cultural value of that, and the guaruntee it places on the parliamentary system, its invaluable
@TylerMaple3009 The Queen was born in England as were her mother and father, grandfather, grandmother, great grandfather, great mother and great-great grandmother, great-great-great grandfather, great-great-great-great grandfather for that matter - makes her pretty English to me. She's also descended from King Egbert of England and Cerdic, King of Wessex (they were the kings of England before England itself).....
@TylerMaple3009 ...They have German "descent". The Royal family have lived in this country for more than 400 years. King George I - the "German" king was HALF German on his father's side but his mother was a BRITISH royal and so when his cousin Queen Anne died George I became the king of Britain. The Queen and the rest of the royal family have for about 100s of years had no German connections apart from their distant cousins and they were all born and raised in Britain....
@Henners1991 No. First go and take history lessons. They were from Hanover. Saxe-Coburg Gotha was Prince Albert's last name, hence, it became the name of his son, Edward VII. And then his son, George V, changed the name of the dynasty. Queen Victoria or her predecessors were NOT S-C.G! Her husband was.
@TylerMaple3009 ...She is also a descended of Henry VII, Essyllt, Idwal, Owen and Margaret Tudor, Rhys, Edmund Tudor and to name a few. Just of her ancestry you think she is German then you may as well call everyone in the world African
@324wilson Hear, hear! As an American, I am proud to have had my ancestors come from such a noble country with a noble monarchy. I may not be British by birth, but I am by heart and desire!
King George actually had a congenital disease called porphyria which has to do with defective enzymes involved in haem synthesis. Some of the side effects include: hallucinations, paranoia and usually dark red coloured urine and faces....these explain his madness!
I believe it was originally called 'The Madness of Kign George III', but they thought it better to just call it 'The Madness of King George' as the American audience would wonder where were parts I and II......lol, just saying what I heard once.
@CroppyBoy1798 It's an urban myth. Accoriding to the director and Nigel Hawthorne, the actor who played George III, it was changed because they wanted to clarify it was about a king as American doesn't have royalty. For me, either one could be true.
@Ariel62073 Oh, he was mad alright, he suffered from a disease called Porphyria, which affects the brain. No cure for that in those days!

deathnotex100 10 months ago
His mother was born in Gotha, Germany, arriving in England at age 16.
She spoke no English upon her arrival -- she was not a Bitish subject.
Therefore, both George III's parents were German
