Real bass or keys bass? The syncopated picking, bounciness and tone has Sting written allover it. If Sting sang backup on "The Promise", he would have been around at some point during the recording sessions. If its Nick playing keys with a bass sound, I'm impressed.
I adore this song and this video. It makes me ache for this time period again. I love the look, the fashion, the sound... Simon *sigh*, Nick. Nothing ... NOTHING compares to this awesomeness.
@csbarlow35 He married a model, fyi.....as did most members of Duran Duran. I don't know how old you are, but this was the '80's, when pop artists (esp from England) were fashion-conscious and wore makeup. It was the style at the time. Nothing more, nothing less. At least they weren't wearing fishnet stockings and spandex like '80's glam metal bands! XD
ive been a dudran duran fan since day one i listen to everything and have a totally open mind about all music and as far as im concerned ive watched them mature musically and the talent gets better although the last album was a little hard to take but still will remain a big fan
As a long standing Duran Duran (since 1982) when this album came out I had very mixed emotions about it since John, Andy, and Roger was not a part of the Arcadia lineup. As much as I acknowledge that Arcadia was supposed to be distictly separate from DD, it was still hard to see both Nick and Simon perform without the rest of the Taylors (no relation, of course :). Still... after all these years, it's wonderful to hear their music again. Cheers! :D
@arigatoMJ .....Arcadia was very set back from DD's music.....strange cause only three out of the fab 5 performed....we should just be happy that the remainders of music is still Duran because of Simon's voice, if they had a different singer, and then Roger and Nick, Arcadia wouldn't sound as good as it did! All I know if I loved the Arcadia era, I loved Nick with black hair, it suited him well! I actually picked up yesterday at a thrift store, the cassette tape for So Red The Rose.....:)
i too am a die hard fan and have been since 1981,i too was a bit dubious (would it work being away from the other two) but hey i think you could pretty much say it did.
I was a massive Arcadia fan when the singles came out, though I remember alot of interest with Election day...there seemed to be AGES before the next single and alot of the interest simply switched to other bands ( and the teenage girls that were duranies were growing up ) For my money Election day should have been put behind "The Flame" and "The promise" as they had a far better, cleaner duran duran sound.
Me mates Simon and Nicky are tops. From Duran Duran to Arcadia, they extend their creativeness, and come up with some memorable musical gems that marked the pinnacle of what the 80's were, and still is... absolute music magic. Never again this form or sound will ever be repeated or mainstream ever again, never.
Ok lads... it cost a fortune to make the video for "Wild Boys" but if we turn the watermill into a clock, and the flying chairs into... erhhh... flying chairs, we might just pull it off....
I love this video so much, I love everything Simon Le Bon and Nick Rhodes have done. This video is a standout though because of all the symbolism, if you read it symbolically it makes perfect sense and fits the song perfectly. Especially the last bit where they come to what appears to be a brick wall but it dissolves and reveals a new landscape and they walk on with a smile taking just one look back at the past, BRILLIANT!
Arcadia were Duran Duran Members Simon Lebon, Nick Rhoades and Roger Taylor who did The Recordings but didn't Appear in any of the Videos. They were Good I wish they would have done More than One Album.
Being a damn-near lifetime Duranie, Arcadia was a wet dream come TRUE for me. And, while I absolutely adore John Taylor? The Power Station was totally overrated.
This track(plus "Election Day") were the best ones from "So Red The Rose"('85). I remember prefering this spin-off band(Arcadia) to Duran Duran themselves. Simon Le Bon & Nick Rhodes looked cool with their hair black! Guests on the album included David Gilmour, Herbie Hancock, Grace Jones(sultry voice) and Sting(backing vocals on "The Promise").
SO RED THE ROSE : The "Remastered Special Edition (2 CD & DVD)" is available now. It contains the original album, all 7" / 12" Versions / B-Sides and Rarities. And by the way: all the videos + making of the videos on DVD. It`s amazing !
Great project. That's a pity that they have only one album in their discography. I think this is great band and it consists of the best of Duran Duran.
mrpobear: That is because back in the 80's the videos were something new and people flocked to see them. I remember staying up late to watch Friday Night Videos at midnight and seeing great videos. Those were pre-cable and pre satellite days for me. Most videos didn't make sense but still great to watch. Music sucks now in pop. Even Country music sucks now. Bring back the 80's.
and i find it amazing that one band was able to come up with such an incredible one in the space of one year (unless it was save-overs with overdubbing etc.) i remember finding a cassette of this in a cut-out bin for next to nothing in 1990 and thinking 'pffffbt... probably sucks' but i'll give it a go. and wow. blew me away ~ total haunting mystique ~ ~ blah blah blah. one of my all time faves, all time greatest pop/rock IMHO.
except this is not duran duran it's arcadia :D i know. close. power station. not a bad project, but to me Arcadia was the Duran Duran album of 1985 (?). power station didn't sound very DD at all. best part IMO being a cover of a t rex song. being a recording 'artist' myself i know how hard it is to put a *good* cd/album together
Since I rated So Red the Rose 11/10 I felt this would be appropriate to justify my rating. The best tracks (very tight throughout the full album) would be Keep Me In the Dark 1st = and Goodbye Is Forever 1st =. Missing - 3 The Flame - 4 Election Day - 5.
I would like to add that if pressed to choose at that time, Arcadia, in my opinion, were vastly better than Power Station and were not even comparable to Arcadia. To Duran fans it is a hard place to be - Arcadia and Power Station but Arcadia produced a fantastic, powerful, imaginative, moody, ambient, visual, catchy and elegant album of what is much closer to DD.
This did seem as that Duran were disintegrating in 1985 and to an extent they were with AT. In truthy, I kinda liked Power Station coz of my Duran loyalty but Arcadia were a decent if not equal in parts splinter group to Duran. I felt that So Red the Rose was a marvellous album and pretty much sounded like an obscure Duran album. Still, it brings be to being around 16 and thinking of kissing girls, life from a young persons persepctive, anxiety at youth and wondering where I fitted in life.11/10
Hey...is it just me or at the end of the video, do Simon and Nick walk into the 'sunset' that happens to look an awful lot like the cover art for the Notorious album??? Any thoughts?
I never understood why Arcadia never quite got the attention that Duran Duran did. I think this music is superior to DD, much more intricate and cerebral. Not that I don't like DD, but I was kind of disappointed when DD got back together and Arcadia was no more.
We, as Duran Duran fans were so heartbroken over the split at the time that it was a little difficult to accept Arcadia or the Power Station. At least, that's how it was for me.
However, I did favor Arcadia over Power Station, but I wasn't happy about it.
Arcadia does hew closer to the Duran Duran sound overall than Power Station so I could see many DD fans favouring them over PS. I mean, DD is not DD without those synths and Arcadia had plenty.
Me, I was a huge PS fan. Wore that cassette right out.
It's been a long time since I heard this song. This album is one of my favorites in the 80s. When Duran Duran disbanded for awhile, I prefer Simon, Roger and Nick's Arcadia over Taylor duo's Powerstation. Listening to it (album as a whole) is just pure bliss. Nick did a great job providing the right architecture in sound. The atmosphere is perfect.
'So Red the Rose' is my favorite album of al time along with Duran's 'Rio'. I can't say there was a bad song on 'So Red'. Never got the publicity or acclaim it deserved.
True indeed. Its a phenomenal album, one of my faves also. I recently got a copy of the fan club Singles boxset from Japan so i'm a a happy bunny right now !
17 years old... living at home with my parents, in love with the girl I thought at the time was the one and only for me. Parties were fun not dangerous.Music was about having a good time, not anger and rage. The 80's were sooo good !!!
Looking back, it's so vivid and fresh in my mind though it was so long ago. It makes me smile and my eyes water all at once because those days are never coming back. Goodbye is Forever!!
nick will play agent joe 90 in the remake of the film simon will be stingray ,roger will be alan tracy ,john will be gordon tracy and andy will be brains hahahahahahah anarky all over the world hahahahahah
I think it`s time for a CD / DVD release with all 12" Versions, B-Sides and videos from ARCADIA`s SO RED THE ROSE. Still brilliant and so fantastic songs on it.
I love nick's face in the beginning...but i alwas love him,but i like his face the most at 0:16.I love his eyes at that part!!! I hope people agree with me,if you think he's ugly, rude, etc. don't leave a comment about nick OR simon.Keep your words to yourself if you hate them!!!
Memories. Them chaps Simon LeBon and Nick Rhodes are superbly striking then as they are today. Arcadia was the "short term creative process out of Duran Duran" conjured up by LeBon and Rhodes.
Does feel like it. When my close inner circle of friends one by one left to start a new life else where (espeically one of them whom I adored), this song everytime comes to mind. It really pulls on the heartstrings. Miss them, and miss the 80's...
I am a 37 year old soul sister and I have been in love with Duran Duran since I was 11 yrs. old. When they appeared on Soul Train as did The Romantics I knew that these guys were going to be huge crossover bands. I love the 80's music it was a time when music was good and you could go to a party and really have a good time singing and dancing with friends!!! Duran Duran so totally rocks!!!
OH a great overlooked 80s gem.. they played it in the background of I love the 80s 3d today and that made me look for it.. i remember watching this video at quarter of 3 am on some late night video show in 85.. i snuck out of bed as i was like 9 or 10. First time i've seen it since, still as good as i remember. Why this song was never a bigger hit then #33 is beyond me.

I think it`s time for a CD / DVD release with all 12" Versions, B-Sides and videos from ARCADIA`s SO RED THE ROSE. Still brilliant and so fantastic songs on it.

Total cool video of a totally cool decade.
