  • Kai doesn't really care about photography, he just likes to play with gadgets (and obviously sell them to other gadgeters). He just goes happy snapping anything in front of him. He's entertaining, but please leave the photography to Alamby. She's a better photographer than him. God, even Garcia is better than him!

  • Hi Kai, can u make a video comparing Carl Zeiss Lenses 35mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.4 for Canon please?

  • your ment to use a focusing screen with that

  • I love my Zeiss 1,4/50. Yeah it was a hard decision because of AF but I am 100% happy with my decision. Just force yourself to adapt and you will get used to just like anything else. I am now buying the Distagon 2,8/21 and hope to get this 1,4/85. Actually, can I request a review of

    the Distagon 2,8/21?

  • Kai, photos are NOT only about bokeh, you should talk about other things when it comes to photography, bokeh is just a small part about the photo.

  • @1JadArdat1 Yeah no shit, but bokeh seems to be all that noobs care about so he's giving them what they want.

  • @rsmith1240 LOL true

  • @1JadArdat1 And I'm pretty sure he knows that they aren't "the most important part" of an image. But this particular lens has a very, very nice bokeh so he why not highlight that feature?

  • @rsmith1240 yeah of course. im just saying every one of his lens reviews seems to be about only bokeh lol

  • Do you ever get tired of saying BOKEH?

  • fuck red ring, i want silver ring !

  • @PlasmoX Oh thanks! that really helped

  • Gun shop?

  • @poopwazza and uncle sam?

  • just wondering if 85mm is too much zoom for most of the time?? im considering buying one

  • @ffuuuucccckk generally, an 85mm would be an ideal length for portraits. I like sticking with 35mm and 50mm myself... I have an 85mm sigma, I don't use it too often

  • @ffuuuucccckk Depends on what your other lenses are, but yes it's pretty tight. 85mm is considered more of a portrait focal length, so in terms of versatility it's somewhat limited. Also it depends on what kind of sensor you're using, on a 7D/T2i/60D an 85mm is 135mm full frame equivalent, so it becomes VERY tight on one of those bodies.

  • a review of the Sigma 85 would be good

  • @Radders123 What the hell are you talking about?? They already reviewed the Sigma 85mm. Search it

  • Samyang 85mm f/1.4 - just cost USD300+...

Is it even worth it to buy this manual focus Zeiss when a similar manual focus Samyang is around??

  • @CyberSetan Technically the Zeiss out-resolves the Samyang, but that doesn't mean the Samyang isn't usable.

  • @CyberSetan I like my zeiss lens, I use it mostly for video because of the super long focus throw, and it's buttery smooth... :)

  • i see gun shop :)) 5:30

  • Beautiful Lens! I'm gonna get one right now!

  • AF is for Noobs! :P

  • Beautiful lens

  • Fook mi, was he stoned?

  • 5:32 gunsssss lol. thats a lot of them.

  • Owww! Awww! Sexy times!! <- priceless.

Only a photographer can find a lens or a camera "sexy". :-)

  • The problem is that a lot of us are young enough to have "auto-focus" as part of our initial ideas of what photography is. Where as a lot of older shooters think of auto-focus as a gimmick the way some think of VR and IS as "gimmicks" on a lens. I'm sure the generation after us will be like... "wtf! crazy, lenses without VR and nanocrystal coating! bad time to be a photography brah..."

  • @MobiusCoin

That is very true. I'm a younger gen Y photographer and got taught with film and manual focus lenses and I was like are they serious - even my p&s has af. As time went by I now appreciate the experience manual focus gives to photographing... it's still abit hard to ward off the generation stigma behind not using AF and having all these 'high tech' lenses.

  • why would they compare a $400 off brand 85mm 1.4 with a high end $1300 high end 85mm 1.4.

Its like trying to compare the samyang 85mm 1.4 with the nikon 1.4g......cant even compare the 2 because there nothing alike

  • @SRAphotog It kind of is a $1300 off brand lens.

  • Try the Samyang 85mm F 1.4?

  • Try

  • Please try the Samyang 85mm F 1.4 compare it whit the zeiss.

  • @helthuismartin lol that is totally impossible for samyang to compare with carl zeiss....samyang is good if you have really tight budget

  • Her name is Alamby...

  • I love Lambi so much

  • kai can u do a battle of 85mm including the samyang/rokinon 85mm 1.4

    for nikon

  • @pmmj Yeah ,that would be a fear test.Ive got them both, believe it orr not,the Samyang wins.,Take a look ate the DomBower video aboud the Samyang whit Nikon mount.

  • Please don't hold it one handed without a strap. My feet get shaky...

  • beautifull alamby...

  • @dinamykdi - i know ! i love alamby !

  • cool how they don't mind the photographer there?

  • Zeiss glass is great, but only on rangefinders.

  • @SuperHolybasil I fully Agree, did some testing and it actually kicks Leica Ass when comparing similar optics.

  • Bohkeh!

  • LOL @ that guy's face when you were going "OYEA" at the bike seat

  • How do you set up a Nikon to display the red dot with a manual lens? My D90 doesn't seem to do it and there's a big difference between what's focused through the view finder and what's focused in the final image on screen. Thanks.

  • set it to burst and spin focus ring around - pray that at least one shot will be great :)

  • McJagger or Steven Tyler...methinks Kai meant Tyler.

  • @thePowerPlant He's British so, Mick Jagger is kinda like Steven Tyler's equivalent.

  • You guys shoulda done thr 50/2 or the 100/2!

  • You should really have compared this to the Sigma 1.4, much closer in terms of price and given the Canon outperforms the Zeiss in almost every way, it's not a case of people choosing high performance MF over low performance AF with the Canon versus Zeiss, as it is with the Sigma.

  • ALAMBY IS SUPER CUTE!

  • If he add this lens on a Nikon D700, it won't suffer the Focus dot to appear when it is there like what he ecperiences...

  • what is BUKEH?

  • @SananPotter it's BOKEH!

  • @NanouoMusic but what does mean/stand for?

  • @SananPotter oh it's just the out of focus part in the background.

Often bokeh is so out of focus that it turns into circles and stuff like that.

If you want to see what I mean just go to google images and type bokeh

  • @NanouoMusic is it good to have moore or less bokeh?

  • @SananPotter depends on how you like your photos

  • @NanouoMusic do you like moore or less bokeh?

  • @SananPotter depends on the composition but for the most part more bokeh

  • 09:11 nice photo

  • Maybe you should compare the Canon 100L vs. the Zeiss Makro Planar 100mm f/2. The Zeiss 100/2 is one of the sharpest lenses around, even wide-open, but how good is it against the 100L.

  • The Zeiss new design have autofocus, but only for Sony/minolta! There is a best autofocus 85 mm lens now. But for Canon I am prefer Leica R Summilux 1.4/80 mm. Try this lens if You can!

  • DUDE WAS THAT A CHEYTAC M200 @ 5:33 ALONG WITH AN M249 PARA??!?!!

  • I WANT ONE..@_@

  • how lovely grandma model. i think shes a filina.

  • I would pick canon for photography but zeiss for video

  • love this guys vids knows what hes talkin about

  • 2:14 DRTV umbrella?

  • expensive stuff

  • auto focus is for slags

  • Can review a samyang 1.4 lens too?

  • this guy is so weird, i love it

  • Why settle for manual focus when you can get the Carl Zeiss optics with auto focus on the Sony body's and with built in OIS? The Zeiss 85mm f1.4 ROCKS on the Sony.

  • Toy guns

  • wtf 5:32 o_O

  • @kekssalat

    It's an airsoft gun shop.

  • why are you comparing a photography lens to a lens better suited for cinema?

  • @StanGrunder You actually don't know what you're talking about, do you?

  • @Harlei3 you are actually don't know you're a rude asshole, do you?

  • No point for me to have such a shallow DOF with manual focus.....frustrating..

  • What the fuck is going on at the shop in 5:32?

  • Comment removed

  • @Bringadistuckamuncle Asia, the mecca for BB Guns enthusiests. Actualy they used one last week on this channel.

  • @Bringadistuckamuncle Airsoft :) or illegal weapon shop :D

  • 7:36 omg XD you are just so funny Kai XD

  • time to compare the sigma 85 1.4 to the nikkor and canon 85's

  • I have the Zeiss 85mm lens, and can testify that this review is quite decent and honest. I like it a lot, because of the unique way it renders images (bokeh, soft focus at wide apertures, etc) and because manual focus makes me photograph more deliberately and mindfully than just clicking full steam ahead, as when using an autofocus lens.

  • new video please!

  • Kai ma żarty jak Strasburger...

  • I would love to have a camera like these, almost any of them really. I have a small, pink canon powershot though, digital camera. Takes amazing pictures, though! It has such a small lens, but i keep it in a case and have a microfiber cloth for it anyway.

A friend of mine has a nice DSLR camera that takes lovely pictures. Too bad she has fingerprints all over that lovely lens of hers.... I would die if my camera was as dirty and stained as hers D:

  • @tnglo so why dont u get a dslr ? for 700 dollars , a NIKON D3100 ,has really great performance :D dont get tricked wit prices and buy a d3000 , caz that cam sucks for sure ( its the worst nikon camera ever )

  • @Thebenjstr it is safe. bought a lens recently. it arrived 3 days later (ordered from Australia)

  • So out of curiosity where do you sit with the protective filter issue? I can't help but to notice that on none of your videos do you ever have any filters on for protection. Is there simply no real explanation here? Or are you against protective filters and think guys like me who spend big bucks on high end filters to put on their L's are wasting their money and settling for a lower image quality. Keep up the good vids btw! Zeiss 50mm 1.4 maybe?

  • @Medic1911 I can only guess, but I think the reason he's not using protective filters in these vids is because it's cumbersome to use a filter just to do some tests and record a video. Additionally, if a lens performs poorly, in some aspect, it'd would difficult to tell if it was the lens itself or the filter causing it.

PS: If you consider a Zeiss 50mm lens, do yourself a favor and consider the 50mm f2.0 macro. It's much much better performing. Just a tip;-)

  • @webmatros I'm out of the prime business for now, but I'd just like to see a review of all the zeiss lenses I would probably never get one but it's interesting to see some light shed on other manufacturers.

  • @Medic1911 The Zeiss 50mm f1.4 has already been reviewed by DigitalRev. What I'd like to see would be a review of the Zeiss wide angle lenses, or the 50mm f2.0 macro.

  • Great reviews Kai and team...

BTW, what is Alamby? Something like char siu?

  • @esexx no its the girl that help kai :D

  • anyone have the BGM? i luv it!

  • lol gun store at 5:30

  • how does this lens perform in the chromatic aberration department? I keep hearing about the same issues with many of the zeiss lenses for modern cameras.

btw, manual focus would be ideal for people doing a lot of dslr video right?

  • @joshuaszeto There is quite a lot of purple fringing at wide apertures, but mostly when shooting backlit subjects, and most of it can be removed with a click or two in Capture One or other raw developers. In black&white it's of course never a problem. The lens is very soft and dreamy yet contrasty at wide apertures, below f2.8. But that makes it a great portrait lens.

  • Kai was that the 85mm 1.2 lens at the beginning of the video?

  • bokeh is good but can be much better if you have a sharp lens. If you want to be serious about bokeh and sharpness and your a canon user there is only one choice L!.

I think doing a video on composition is not a good idea as composition is very much what makes one photographer different from another and if you want basic info on composition read a text book otherwise get out there and find your own style.

  • Do a video on composition.

  • if u add extention tubes i bet the manual focus and the focus ring that takes for ever to go from infinity to 1m would make that zeiss a perfect macro lens :D

  • I like how he called out all the people who senselessly comment on the girls the use in the videos, way too much. nice.

  • review the sigma 150mm macro thumb up !

  • the bokeh is awesome

  • Kai! Do a Zeiss with AF! The 85mm F/1.4 ZA for Sony Alpha!

  • GTA's gun store !!! 5:30

  • lol, anyone else notice the gunstore at 5:30 ?

  • Thank you, Kai (and DigitalRev) for giving us "moral" and very entertaining videos. The last couple of vids have been wonderful. I was able to concentrate on the products and consider whether I wanted to buy them from DigitalRev, instead of whether my kids were gonna think Dad is a pervert for watching camera porn. Kai, you are a funny, smart, and entertaining guy. When I open YouTube, the first place I go is to see if DigitalRev has a new video. Thanks!

  • Why Kai always shoots wide open?

  • 5:30 WEEAPONS! Crazy shop! We don't have shops like those in Italy..

  • Kai...go into that gun shop you passed on the street. Take pics and buy a new gun for high speed photography part 2.

  • 5:28

Oh, he seems to be passing by Freddiew's gun shop.

  • Do a review on Zeiss on the 35f2.0 , 35f1.4 and canon 35/1.4,35/2.0.These choice confused me for a long time!

  • with the canon 85mm shooting @ 1.2, you can't make a bad picture

  • @Moemay9 It's can make bad picture if you carry this lens and walking for a mile, It's really huge. :)

  • SPECIAL REQUEST FOR KAI.

Do a review of Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f/0.95 Micro Four Thirds Lens. Kai said that Voigtlander also make Zeiss lens. I want one now!

  • @YouFirstEye they did that review 2 months ago, btw I highly recommend it, especially if you're shooting video

  • I think the Carl Zeiss has better BOKEH. As Kai said, the 85mm focal length is best for portraits(Although, I think 135mm is even better) Both lenses look very soft when shooting wide open. The Canon lens has autofocus, but is twice the price... just add a focusing screen and get the Zeiss, and enjoy better glass.

  • @RoyVanNistelrooij how much does it cost to add a focus screen?

  • ohhh my god do a review on the opteka 650-1300 $249 US that would be an epic review

  • Damn guys, if you think Elamby is really something, then you haven't seen any other attractive asians...

  • Let me check the Manual Focus on those rifles @5:30 Kai...Bokeh!!! :D

  • @Thebenjstr YES, JUST GOT 60D NO PROBLEM.

  • Whoa the guns at 5:33

  • Manuel focus forever!

  • How about you guys do a review about cheapo SAMYANG 85mm vs this expensive ZEISS , as both manual lens and min aperture f1.4

  • 8:02 How dare you calling alamby a granny... X3

  • PLEASE DO A REVIEW ON A 17-55 f/2.8!!!!

  • Seems to be raining a lot lately in Hong Kong

  • BJAlew Not real guns, Airsoft toys.

  • @scottt923

I believe mostly 5D Mark II with EF 24-105mm IS.

  • guns??? 5:32

  • What camera is the camera man using?

  • alamby can review a didgeridoo camera :)

  • @ 05:30 Zombie Apocalypse store.

  • You have the best job!!

  • amazing looks like a crystal ball

  • Much easier to focus if you use live view with a manual focus lens.

10x zoom, focus, then you only need to take the picture.

  • More of this, there are those who are still using old analog cameras.

    I use a Nikon FE2 and thought about buying a Zeiss 50mm.

Love to see a review of the Zeiss 50mm f1,4

  • Creepy place were you can buy a lot of guns.. @ 05:29

  • @gigicalifornia pretty sure they're just bb guns...

  • you can with the Canon... ;) the Zeiss is just too old fashion...probably only good for shooting portraits in the studio!!

  • MORE ALAMBY AND LOK! THEY ARE OVERWHELMINGLY ADORABLE!

  • BUTTERY!!!!!!!!!!1

  • U should make a contest bout something, u guys are awesome and lock should make another rewiew too hes fun hehe;D

  • Stop commenting about Alamby, go out and get laid

  • When you guys Alamby is cute, either you guys are sarcastic or you must be real fags.

  • I'm surprised you didn't use Canon's Eg-S focus screen on the 5DII. Fast primes is the sole purpose of that focus screen and would have helped you w/the manual focus on the Zeiss.

  • what type of video camera are you guy's using to do this video I would love to see a review of that.

  • @UCITWORLD They usually use the cannon eos 7D or 5D mk ii (which is used in this video.

  • how about a Sigma 85mm 1.4mm review?
