He's entertaining, but please leave the photography to Alamby. She's a better photographer than him. God, even Garcia is better than him!
I love my Zeiss 1,4/50. Yeah it was a hard decision because of AF but I am 100% happy with my decision. Just force yourself to adapt and you will get used to just like anything else. I am now buying the Distagon 2,8/21 and hope to get this 1,4/85. Actually, can I request a review of
Interesting comparison here.. but when I think about the conclusion one is lead to here (ie; Canon L lens is sharper and therefore better..) I must say I disagree.. As other commenters have mentioned bokeh is not everything - Sharpness isn't everything either. And furthermore it does not in and of itself make for a better rendering, particularly in Portraiture.
But then again I could be a bit biased as a Sony shooter, for which CZ DOES make AF Lenses. Nothing beats the CZ AF version!
@1JadArdat1 And I'm pretty sure he knows that they aren't "the most important part" of an image. But this particular lens has a very, very nice bokeh so he why not highlight that feature?
@ffuuuucccckk generally, an 85mm would be an ideal length for portraits. I like sticking with 35mm and 50mm myself... I have an 85mm sigma, I don't use it too often
@ffuuuucccckk Depends on what your other lenses are, but yes it's pretty tight. 85mm is considered more of a portrait focal length, so in terms of versatility it's somewhat limited. Also it depends on what kind of sensor you're using, on a 7D/T2i/60D an 85mm is 135mm full frame equivalent, so it becomes VERY tight on one of those bodies.
The problem is that a lot of us are young enough to have "auto-focus" as part of our initial ideas of what photography is. Where as a lot of older shooters think of auto-focus as a gimmick the way some think of VR and IS as "gimmicks" on a lens. I'm sure the generation after us will be like... "wtf! crazy, lenses without VR and nanocrystal coating! bad time to be a photography brah..."
That is very true. I'm a younger gen Y photographer and got taught with film and manual focus lenses and I was like are they serious - even my p&s has af. As time went by I now appreciate the experience manual focus gives to photographing... it's still abit hard to ward off the generation stigma behind not using AF and having all these 'high tech' lenses.
@pmmj Yeah ,that would be a fear test.Ive got them both, believe it orr not,the Samyang wins.,Take a look ate the DomBower video aboud the Samyang whit Nikon mount.
How do you set up a Nikon to display the red dot with a manual lens? My D90 doesn't seem to do it and there's a big difference between what's focused through the view finder and what's focused in the final image on screen. Thanks.
You should really have compared this to the Sigma 1.4, much closer in terms of price and given the Canon outperforms the Zeiss in almost every way, it's not a case of people choosing high performance MF over low performance AF with the Canon versus Zeiss, as it is with the Sigma.
Maybe you should compare the Canon 100L vs. the Zeiss Makro Planar 100mm f/2. The Zeiss 100/2 is one of the sharpest lenses around, even wide-open, but how good is it against the 100L.
The Zeiss new design have autofocus, but only for Sony/minolta! There is a best autofocus 85 mm lens now. But for Canon I am prefer Leica R Summilux 1.4/80 mm. Try this lens if You can!
Why settle for manual focus when you can get the Carl Zeiss optics with auto focus on the Sony body's and with built in OIS? The Zeiss 85mm f1.4 ROCKS on the Sony.
I have the Zeiss 85mm lens, and can testify that this review is quite decent and honest. I like it a lot, because of the unique way it renders images (bokeh, soft focus at wide apertures, etc) and because manual focus makes me photograph more deliberately and mindfully than just clicking full steam ahead, as when using an autofocus lens.
I would love to have a camera like these, almost any of them really. I have a small, pink canon powershot though, digital camera. Takes amazing pictures, though! It has such a small lens, but i keep it in a case and have a microfiber cloth for it anyway.
A friend of mine has a nice DSLR camera that takes lovely pictures. Too bad she has fingerprints all over that lovely lens of hers.... I would die if my camera was as dirty and stained as hers D:
@tnglo so why dont u get a dslr ? for 700 dollars , a NIKON D3100 ,has really great performance :D dont get tricked wit prices and buy a d3000 , caz that cam sucks for sure ( its the worst nikon camera ever )
So out of curiosity where do you sit with the protective filter issue? I can't help but to notice that on none of your videos do you ever have any filters on for protection. Is there simply no real explanation here? Or are you against protective filters and think guys like me who spend big bucks on high end filters to put on their L's are wasting their money and settling for a lower image quality. Keep up the good vids btw! Zeiss 50mm 1.4 maybe?
@Medic1911 I can only guess, but I think the reason he's not using protective filters in these vids is because it's cumbersome to use a filter just to do some tests and record a video. Additionally, if a lens performs poorly, in some aspect, it'd would difficult to tell if it was the lens itself or the filter causing it.
PS: If you consider a Zeiss 50mm lens, do yourself a favor and consider the 50mm f2.0 macro. It's much much better performing. Just a tip;-)
@webmatros I'm out of the prime business for now, but I'd just like to see a review of all the zeiss lenses I would probably never get one but it's interesting to see some light shed on other manufacturers.
@Medic1911 The Zeiss 50mm f1.4 has already been reviewed by DigitalRev. What I'd like to see would be a review of the Zeiss wide angle lenses, or the 50mm f2.0 macro.
how does this lens perform in the chromatic aberration department? I keep hearing about the same issues with many of the zeiss lenses for modern cameras.
btw, manual focus would be ideal for people doing a lot of dslr video right?
@joshuaszeto There is quite a lot of purple fringing at wide apertures, but mostly when shooting backlit subjects, and most of it can be removed with a click or two in Capture One or other raw developers. In black&white it's of course never a problem. The lens is very soft and dreamy yet contrasty at wide apertures, below f2.8. But that makes it a great portrait lens.
bokeh is good but can be much better if you have a sharp lens. If you want to be serious about bokeh and sharpness and your a canon user there is only one choice L!.
I think doing a video on composition is not a good idea as composition is very much what makes one photographer different from another and if you want basic info on composition read a text book otherwise get out there and find your own style.
if u add extention tubes i bet the manual focus and the focus ring that takes for ever to go from infinity to 1m would make that zeiss a perfect macro lens :D
Thank you, Kai (and DigitalRev) for giving us "moral" and very entertaining videos. The last couple of vids have been wonderful. I was able to concentrate on the products and consider whether I wanted to buy them from DigitalRev, instead of whether my kids were gonna think Dad is a pervert for watching camera porn. Kai, you are a funny, smart, and entertaining guy. When I open YouTube, the first place I go is to see if DigitalRev has a new video. Thanks!
I think the Carl Zeiss has better BOKEH. As Kai said, the 85mm focal length is best for portraits(Although, I think 135mm is even better) Both lenses look very soft when shooting wide open. The Canon lens has autofocus, but is twice the price... just add a focusing screen and get the Zeiss, and enjoy better glass.
I'm surprised you didn't use Canon's Eg-S focus screen on the 5DII. Fast primes is the sole purpose of that focus screen and would have helped you w/the manual focus on the Zeiss.
Kai doesn't really care about photography, he just likes to play with gadgets (and obviously sell them to other gadgeters). He just goes happy snapping anything in front of him. He's entertaining, but please leave the photography to Alamby. She's a better photographer than him. God, even Garcia is better than him!

Much easier to focus if you use live view with a manual focus lens.
10x zoom, focus, then you only need to take the picture.

More of this, there are those who are still using old analog cameras.
I use a Nikon FE2 and thought about buying a Zeiss 50mm.
Love to see a review of the Zeiss 50mm f1,4

I'm surprised you didn't use Canon's Eg-S focus screen on the 5DII. Fast primes is the sole purpose of that focus screen and would have helped you w/the manual focus on the Zeiss.
