I was a huge fan of the Sixers back in the 80's and one of my favorite players was Andrew Toney. Absolutely fearless attitude, and a first step that nobody could stop. At times he might have taken too many shots, but he could go on a run at any time. Loved his jumpshot.
The Celtics got rid of Ainge because he couldn't guard him then DJ tried but failed. Incredible first step, lethal pull up jumper. A shame the stress fractures ended his career so soon. Loved the Zink at the old Spectrum "Andrewww Toneyyyy!"
Andrew Toney.. Haid a laid back personality and a silent killer game. I really think that he just wasn't feeling the Sixers organization because we all know that they don't treat there players right.
Andrew was one of the most explosive shooters back in his playing days. I was fortunate enough growing up as a kid I got to watch him and the Ragin Cajuns of Southwestern Louisisana play and you just knew he was going to make it at the NBA level. Just a great player and a even better person.
Andrew Toney would destroy most guards today because these guards don't play lockdown defense like they did back in the 80s. In 1983 no team would have beat Philly. They refused to lose. They weren't the best team ever, but they were tired of losing to the Lakers.
Although his career was cut short by injuries, he was one of the most feared shooting guards of all time. Could've scored 30 a game if he wanted to, but realized he was on such a loaded team. Miss those days when he was lighting up the Celts.
I heard he was the one that put Lakers guard Norm Nixon out of commission in the '83 Finals. Can't say that didn't make a difference in the Sixers routing them to a championship title...
Loved Him and while he was known as 'The Boston strangler' and he must've been part-owner of the Knicks,He didn't match up that well with the Nets Guards the year after the championship and the 76ers lost in the first round to the Nets
- Excerpt from Barkley's Outrageous!, "Toney was amazingly strong, he and Moses were the only ones on the team that could post me up!" Barkley went on to say in the book, "I thought he (Toney) was the best player on the team when I got here. We had Bobby Jones, Moses Malone, and Julius Erving, but the only one I was in awe of was Andrew Toney. Current Miami Heat general manager Pat Riley once said, "He's the greatest clutch player I've ever seen. The hell with Jerry West!"
Andrew toney,Dr J and Moses Malone gave LA nightmares. A healthy toney would have been a 76ers repeat or 3peat. they probably wouldnt have taken the 86 celtics but they could have won 2 more definately
The most underrated shooting guard ever IMO. Without Andrew Toney, Dr. J and Moses Malone wouldn't ever be wearing a championship ring. He had a killer first step and a deadly scorer. Charles Barkley pays tribute to this guy in his book "Outrageous".
One of the most underrated players of all time. He could play in any era. He didn't have long of enough of a career to make it to the upper echelon, but in his prime he was one of the most feared players in the NBA.
The great Andrew Toney (aka The Boston Stangler). As a high school kid, I had the privilege of watching Toney at Southwestern La - now U of L - Lafayette. Blackham Coliseum was unbelievable then. If not for a bum foot that wouldn't heal properly, this dude was have ended up being one of the greatest 100 to ever play. Just ask Larry Bird. Best part, I don't remember anyone ever saying anything negative about the cat - graduated, good family man, etc. Big ups, Mr. Toney ...much respect.
Man, I was also a huge Laker fan in the 80's like I am now, except I still prefer those 80's Lakers and Showtime. However, that Andrew Toney was DANGEROUS whenever he got that ball. As soon as he squared up for a shot, that ball was in. Just like Bernard King of the Knicks... Great memories of great basketball and those guys didn't get the kind of money NBA players make now.
I was a huge Laker fan in the eighties (back when the Lakers knew how to win) and I WAS AFRAID of Andrew Toney when he'd play the Lakers ...he'd shoot the LA Lights Out!!!!...
andrew toney was a very deadly scorer. he plays like he has no weaknesses in his game.

Toney had more of a lightning fast first step than Joe Dumars. Joe was more complete all around though.

I think that during the regular season in 81 Andrew Toney lit the Lakers up for 46 points. They could not stop him at all.
