  • To the people calling these guys hipsters, thank you. You have finally, albeit, unintentionally, placed a positive meaning to this derogatory term. I have noticed people calling Animal Collective, Fleet Foxes, Dirty Projectors, and many more bands "hipsters". Call me ignorant, but it seems to me the one thing all these "hipster" bands have in common is that they make great music.

  • @whitebloodcell305 Amen brother

  • Those girls....

  • The weird shit he does with his voice is just incredible. I think it's creative as hell. It seems like something that could make or break if someone liked them or not.

  • dave totally looks like a cross between rivers cuomo and david byrne. totally.

  • the ladies' voices are angelic.

  • YAY @ all the Fun with Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

    I wanna play, too.

  • This looks soooo cultish :P

  • singing next to cops:)

  • does anyone know the chords in this song? PLEASE

  • @Travmann777 yeah, I go with you, would like to learn this one

  • He needs to get better-fitting pants

  • lol thats the most polite way to tell a cop to fuck themselves ever

  • pure magic @2:55

  • this was the most amazing live performance ive ever seen

  • its that zeitgeist rolling through parricide rhythms which makes it hot

  • hahahah holy shit I love his guttural screams and whatnot

  • LAWLLL @ 1:19

  • wow i watched this on mushrooms and it blew my mind. im totally a fan now

  • How can anyone like this shit? More hipster crap invading the city I was born and raised! This was simply horrible and pretentious.

  • @MyLittleHero95 you're simply over opinionated and whacked out of your god damned head. i guess you have that right as a troll. but i can prolly bet that you don't play music...and i hope to god you never start. and if you do, well then i'd recommend more dirty projectors to you.

  • @trevormsmithbsu Sorry for the late response, but you're wrong! Firstly, I'm not "whacked out of my god damned head." Secondly, I do play music, actually, I play the piano and guitar since I was twelve.

The troll here seems to be you. Are you some hipster that lives in my beloved New York, or do you still live in some shitty small town with aspirations to come here? Typical.

  • @MyLittleHero95 what entitles you to ownership of creativity?

  • @MyLittleHero95 its just music dude calm down..

  • @MyLittleHero95 @MyLittleHero95 I'm with you man. these cats responding are saying 'it's just music' etc but this video demonstrates a symptom (albeit a 'creative' one) of what's been happening to our city for the past decade or so... enjoy your music, folks. Real New Yorkers are paying for it with gentrification, rising rent, and outlandish prices for basic necessities. And please, if you're going to respond to prove me wrong, don't be from a place other than NYC, because you don't understand.

  • @defdeezy what is music then? tell me what its all right to listen? really tell me please because there seem to be a million of people who knows but no one really nows, its like if you are up to a gender that it might be likeable for alot of persons who are "hipster" but really there are no difference

sy its labeling , , really just enjoy the art behind music not only in this one , and im not trying to be artsy as the say , fuck i just like to get high and listen to music

  • @defdeezy @MyLittleHero95 - tell me a place where rent is not rising, taxes are not curbing the majority basic freedoms and life is not a struggle, i live in a place where even a shitty job is hard to find and yet people get by, even better, some people make the most of it and find the time to go out for a walk, play with their kids maybe paint a picture or even write a song.

You live in a beautiful city, full of diversity and culture, that is a good thing...

  • @uytrexf You're obviously not a New Yorker, so you wont understand. This has nothing to do with art or diversity, but with the people (rich suburban kids) coming here and taking the life out of working class neighborhoods. The rent is high because of these people, unless you're rich, then you don't have a problem. These hipsters have ruin the entire city! What makes it sad is that they don't understand how they are ruining the city. I guess they're too busy making art in their expensive loft.

  • this is awesome, the ladies really make the music, gr8 harmony

  • It takes a lot of balls to sing Police Story in front of a cop like that, and he just stares at her the entire song.

  • does anyone know the chords for police story?

  • 5:35 speaking in tounges?

  • He's not only a musical Genius....

    He's got "the girls"

    Longstreth the Pimp

  • I wish they would have done their own songs. THis was cool

  • He is screaming at the Police

  • the blonde girl is soooooooo cute!

  • The girls are incredible. I really have a hard time with the guy though.

  • @slightlyskitso he creates the songs, how can you have a hard time with him

  • @vanillaskynet

Because his voice is not pleasing to me in the slightest.

  • brilliance

  • unique new yorque

  • where did you get that hat? haha

  • VIVE LA BLOGOTHEQUE! <3

  • @cowboyspwn23.......learn to love it man, learn to love it.

  • are these real people?... strange....curious to know if they are musical robots with every melody programmed in their voice boxes sent from another world

  • @ 2:40 unbelievable

  • anybody have the chords to police story?

Its a great song and i can't seem to figure it out

  • That's kinda funny actually, how people keep ignoring them until others start looking at them, then everyone starts noticing somethings going on so they're interested too. kinda builds up like that

  • he plays left handed? that's awesome

  • During Gimme Gimme, I love yet hate how long it took for people to disconnect themselves from their static pace and plug into the beauty of the moment that so many others had passed.

  • 7:54 instant fall-in-love moment. thanks a lot amber...

  • Anyone know the chords for police story? Or where to find them?

  • amen amen....

  • 6:22 All that tape and his strap still falls off. I want dave's sweater lol.

  • I love that sweater too. I'm gonna look in some charity shops for one, lol

  • I don't feel uncomfortable watching this. I think the whole thing is awesome. And the beginning is awesome. Right there in front of that cop and everything. Really fitting for the moment.

  • lol@ the first song. even if their uniqueness and technical brilliance mean nothing to you, you'd have to appreciate their pure audacity.

  • @merdufer The Whole album rise above, which this song is taken from is a cover of Black Flag's Damaged, so most of the lyrics are Black Flag's... check the wiki article on it.

it's amazing that Dave Longstreth did it all from memory.

  • I loved this, but it also made me feel soooo uncomfortable at times.

  • @cowboyspwn23 Maybe that's what they go for in some songs

  • you guys suck, not the dirty p's, the people commenting on this video haha, this video is fucking awesome, the vocals are just amazing

  • man idk how they harmonize the girls' vocals at all but it's incredible

  • That dude is actually insanely prolific. He doesn't have a regular 40 hour job, but he does work like crazy.

  • I'd say listen to the album, tbh.

After reading this comment I was enticed by the group. I've spent the last few days deciding whether or not I like them and I definitely do. At first I was perplexed by the lyrics and harmonization, but now I'm compelled by them. I can't say I'm positive I'd be at all curious by this group had I not read your comment. Thank you.

  • Its a Black Flag song, dumbshit.

  • yea i was hating them on the same sorta lines. following the relic of rage's foot steps. the boney cool guy trying to look mighty and rebellious.

but aside from that. they're speaking the truth. as much as they don't look like a bad injustice has happened to them, they're standing up for ppl who are affected by societal difference.

having a job doesn't qualify you by any means. if anything having a job shows your allegiance to the Queen. we are all slaves at the end of the day. open your eyes.

  • wow you should be ashamed, no you should go fuck yourself

Dirty Projectors are genius please do yourself a favor and check out rise above, or just listen to talk radio for the rest of your life

  • this was surreal and haunting. i don't get the relationship between these three girls and this dude and how it can sustain itself in the real world.

at the end when people stopped and listened. that was beatiful.

AH oh my god it was ACTUALLY happening! haha

  • 2:42 he has an orgasm

  • painfully beautiful, to me.

  • 08:19 is friggin amazing! the rest as well

  • and?

  • ha, the cop standin right over there.... uh hay...

  • When they're singing "Gimme Gimme Gimme" it totally seems like they're pan panhandling.

  • i want that sweater

  • i love his scream!

  • i like how they play police story next to a cop.

  • hahaha the look on the cops face when he says sings the song

  • Wounderfull!!!

  • Oh my god it burns.

  • spencer tricker has become famous!

  • i have no idea how i recognized him

  • P.S.S.--Cocaine ppl will fall for anything.

  • P.S.--"Where did you get that hayut?" @ 00:30 is fucking precious.

  • My dad thought they sucked in the '60s

My mom thought they sucked in the '70s

Black Flag and Raymond Pettibon thought they sucked in the '80s (that's why they did what they did)

Somebody thought they sucked in the '90s

    I think they suck now.

  • Comment removed

  • They are really good live. Go see 'em

  • I was into Black Flag right when they came out with their first album. So when I first heard the Projectors, I was surprised at first. But now I really appreciate their rendition of this fine music. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll do the Sex Pistols or Ramones next.

  • why does he freak out like that?? besides that beautiful music

  • why DOES he freak out like that?

    weird huh

  • Not weird. I can't believe you actually got thumbs up for saying this. It's just what he does. And it's fucking awesome. Go listen to some American Idol bullshit.

  • The music is obviously to challenging for the average pedestrian... lol I love it. I really think this old school 60's style of filming on the street is cool. love that somone has taken it upon themselves to document what's happening and where music truly is today... not the industry but the true passion and genius of the avant-garde.

  • that was a little tense... with the security guard/police officer? When dude goes off... lol! the reaction from the crowed is priceless! It's really interesting how people react to these spontaneous recordings. There is always some level of confusion until the public sees the camera, then they start to react to what's being filmed, up until that point there a bit annoyed and confused. . Half of the people don't know what to do.

  • I love the picture quality in these. Everything dark seems darker. And kinda blurred or something.

  • Incredible

  • This stuff is red-hot. How have I not heard this before. I'm an IDIOT!

  • hot damn. i can not wait to see them play.

  • I agree with most of what iamthepinkylifter said, except the Naivete of the music. His singing is raw and pointed, but his harmonic concept is really advanced and I find nothing accidental about the way Longstreth's singing interacts with the orchestration of the three voices. I would be surprised if Longstreth hasn't devoted a lot of time to some serious musical study.

  • i meant naive in the emotional sense. He is musically trained; he studied classical composition at yale. you can hear it in the way the music is structured and in the chord arrangements and cadences he chooses. guy definitely knows his shit.

  • father figuration

  • Parts of this make me feel very uncomfortable. That is kind of refreshing. I like it.

  • the guy is a freaking genius.

  • i agree that >99% of the music around now is exactly what you've described, but Dave Longstreth is definitely not among that large percentage. He released his first album in 2001, just before the strokes et al shifted everyone's focus to indie music.

Longstreth's music is difficult to tolerate without repeated listening. It's understandable that people write him off. But to me, his albums (especially his early ones) are like museum pieces. They ooze naïve earnestness, far from bullshit.

  • i love it how hes singing right by the cop.

  • i don't know if anyone pointed this out yet, but these are all black flag songs. and i think they are really creative. i'm a fan. and he screams the parts in the first song about police and there's a cop standing like ten feet from him. i thought it was fucking cool. that's just me.

  • your reasoning is so logical and well explained!!!!!!!

  • he writes/composes all the music, except for the lyrics and some melodies of Rise Against, as is well known. he doesn't want attention, it's his music, he's performing it how he wants.

  • new to dirty projectors/longstreth. just wondering how you know he writes parts for Rise Against... i realize that longstreth has had some background in punk music, but i see no ties between him and rise against. just wondering, it'd be cool to know.

  • oh hahah I meant Rise Above, sorry!

  • first of all, it's a cover. second, this song isn't about the war on terrorism or whatever you associate 'fighting a war' with...

  • this fuckin city...

  • it's amazing!

    what a talent they've got!

  • It is right nice that song be sung in Washington Square- box preachin history, nice hat tipping, see ya'll in glasgow

  • The event going on in the back is something that art is known for. The timing of the police officer and the civilians sinking up with the content of the music is flawless.

    -Marques Toliver

  • powerful voices

  • amazing, astounding, awesome

  • i totally have a crush on amber shes super cute and can play guitar like superman.

  • god, so do I.... ughhhh

  • i agree.

  • It is great..... Nobody pays them any attention in the park. What could be better than walkkng around playing a guitar with four beautiful women - Love It, Love Him, LOVE AMBER!!

  • this is absolutely amazing. i've watched it now 3 times and i'm still stunned by it...

  • soooo freakin good. I will never get over the genious and beautiful melodies/dischordance of dirty projectors.

  • <3333333333333333333333333 I need a cd of these people!!! Where can I get one??

  • I guess the police are there so he doesnt get attacked.
