Great song with sad lyrics and Dame Shirley shown her sorrow through her vocal power and make us weep!! This is magic. Shirley is still top of her performance after 50 years in show business.
This is NOT the version I remember played on Radio 390 in the 60's. The version I remember could have been interchanged with Vicki Carr's voice. .both versions are great. But i think I prefer Vicki's version. Gosh if I had a woman that wanted me that much, I wouldn't leave home!!!!! KRS
i'm not sure why i liked this Vicki Carr song as much as i did, but it just worked so irresistably well despite, or because of, the unapologetic girlie schmaltz. i mean, what self-loving guy wouldn't want to be so missed? But you know, i find myself smiling at Shirley's crisp and almost cruel enunciation of the lyrics. i think she's doing a sunset boulevard here, as tragi-comedy, and it's quite exquisitely delicious haha
@123KMus....yes, much as I love the Bassey, I totally agree with you: this just doesn't seem to have the truth and vulnerability that Vikki's has. Just my opinion, folks, so don't lose sleep over it...lol x
Interesting interpretation of the song.. I also heard the Vicki Carr version and I love both equally.. Both of them are powerful singers.. I love them both. At 2:12 , the picture looks more like Nancy Pelosi instead of Shirley Bassey , so that's probably the only thing that may need editing in the video..
I was fortunate to see Shirley Bassey in the early 70's at the Empire Room of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. She received standing ovations after each song. Her powerful voice made the chanderliers move. She is an incredible performer and a beautiful lady.
@Rosannasfriend I totally disagree, although I'm biased. Bassey here sounds like she is on 'auto-pilot' and going through the motions (no e!) singing this song that belongs, quite rightly, to Ms Carr.
I love this song! The emotion she displays throughout the song is extraordinary and as you listen to the song you can sense the outbursts of emotion that she is going through as she hopes that the person on the other end of the phone is her guy only to find out that it's not him. Great song from start to finish.
Eindelijk. Lang gezocht naar dit lied....
Thanks!

Nice show by Shirley but VIKKI CARR owns this song! Absolutely no one can bring this song to life except Vikki Carr.

The arrangement does not help. Posh restroom music should not accompany an epic.

Vikki Carr's version is more emotional. This version is ok, but she sounds like Eartha Kitt which is ok, but just not the same.

I think Shirley adds more emotion to the song than Vikki Carr.

Wonderful slideshow. This song seems to be made for Shirley. It goes very well with her voice. 5 stars for the Dame!
