its pretty common for the vct solenoid to stuff out. try unplugging the v.c.t plug and see if the noise goes if it does replace with new one if not it could be a numbe rof things such as timing chain or lifters
this is deff timing tain rattle one prob snaped off. it always happends on the sr's and ka24d's. i have had four comb s13's s14's all with the same prob. open it up and remove it depending on which one it is you can run with out it. cause it will happend again if replaced. thats why i run rb's and ca's now.
same thing was going on with mine i removed tube that went to turbo and checked propeller shaft on turbo min was worn and moving a little had to replace turbo
the metal piece broke off of that along time ago, and I have had it ziptied together. I checked it today and it is very sturdy. I got under the car and had someone keep it at the rattle noise and it didn't seem like it was coming from there at all.

turbine bolts start backing themselves off over time. check it out. some of my friends have tack welded the bolts to stop the problem further.
