im in Southampton UK and cant ever here ISS on 145.800 (using no RX encoding or whatever)
what am i missing and where abouts are you in UK as im trying to figure out what the differences are, also if im using a radio set to wide instead of narrow will this make a difference?
@darrylip Hi there, thanks for watching my video. Any scanner or handheld would do, as long as it can receive the 145.800MHz frequency and receive narrow-band FM. Elsewhere in my channel, you can see me using the Baofeng UVR-3 (very cheap) and Yaesu VX-170 (more expensive!) handheld transceivers, and the GRE PSR-295 scanner. Search for other videos on YouTube for people receiving the ISS for an idea of what you could use, and the possibilities of using bigger antennas. Good luck!
@rmsproductions33 If you mean the Wouxon, I didn't need to unlock it - it would TX and RX across VHF & UHF already. If you mean the Yaesu, then yes I have done the mod. Not because I want to transmit anywhere illegally, but to make it more "future proof" just in case any new bands become available or any of the band edges move (think of 40m which doubled in size overnight a few years back, for example!) I like my FT-450 a lot and I intend to keep it and use it for as long as possible! 73
@rmsproductions33 No you wouldn't. The major reason is that the E5 won't receive the 2 meter amateur radio band (144 - 146MHz in Europe)... the highest frequency it will receive is 108MHz at the top of the Band II VHF / FM broadcast band. But even if the E5 did receive 145.800MHz, the audio would be very distorted, sound horrible, and you would be lucky to copy more than a few words. The E5 receives wideband FM (as used by broadcast stations), whereas FM transmissions on 2 meters are narrow.
@rmsproductions33 There's an updated version of the Wouxon dualbanderavailable these days, I've no idea what "improvements" it brings over the KG-UVD1P though. I bought the UVD1P in 2010, and it's still working perfectly in 2012 despite many hours' use. I think I paid about £90 for it, and if divide the number of contacts I've had into the cost, then it represents outstanding value for money. Almost everyone reports good audio as well. I would certainly recommend Wouxons with no hesitation!
@G0IFI Well I really like them, and I hear that there is a newer "Mark II" version available now. Mine is still going strong despite two years of much use. I couldn't complain if it fell apart tomorrow really, given its low price... although of course I hope it will keep going for a long time yet! I wouldn't hesitate to replace it with the new version. 73 from Ed 2E0MDO
@G0IFI I own many HT radios. I recently purchased the Wouxun KG-UVD1P on Ebay for $105 USD. The items was purchased from RadioAccessoryShop in Hong Kong and was shipped to my location in Ohio USA in 8 days! For the money this is truly one heck of a radio. There are also mods out there to open the radio up. This is the perfect radio for a beginner HAM or GMRS users. Programing the radio is a breeze using the software and cable. My only recommendation is getting a longer dual band antenna
@Aqlor Because I was much much too far away! The uplink was coming (I assume) from Italy and I am located in Southern England! Sometimes you can work out the questions based on the answers coming down from the ISS. Also, if you do some research on the internet, you might well find the list of questions posted somewhere. Maybe! 73 from Ed 2E0MDO
@fnicoGS Hi,the antenna I use is home-made so you cannot buy the exact model in the shops! It is a yagi design for the 2 meter band, with just a driven element and a reflector behind it. There are no directors, so it is shaped like an "H". I have filmed a video of it, that you can find here on my YouTube channel! If the ISS is above you then you should be able to receive it on 145.800MHz narrow FM. But the amateur radio station is not transmitting all the time, of course. 73 from 2E0MDO
nice recording, strong signal! probably you had captured the moment when a school near Turin (here in Italy) had the possibility to made some questions directly at the ISS italian spaceman in that mission thanks also at some italian radio amateur.
....I've the same radio but what type of the antenna do you use?????
I can't receive any space signal even if the ISS is on top of me!
@Jamieduk999 I don't know why, but the idea of transmitting to the ISS doesn't get me going! I much prefer to receive it. If I do transmit one day, I will need to buy some new and better equipment first!
@smipe2001 Well all is not lost, any scanner / handheld that can receive 145.800MHz in narrow FM can receive the ISS when it is overhead and transmitting. Have a look around elsewhere on YouTube. There are also amateur radio satellites in the 70cms band, I believe, although I have never looked for them. I think somewhere around 435 - 436 MHz. Enjoy your listening - radio is a great hobby!
Brilliant vid this - I have the same radio and have caught this sat on the captive whip outside whilst having a smoke!! I'd be interested to learn more of your homebrew yagi in the loft - I will most liklely do something very similar, based on antenna restrictions etc.
@manoffunk Hi and thanks for your kind comments. I do have a video of it elsewhere on my channel - have a look for "2m homebrew yagi". It wasn't actually made by me; a friend designed and provided the components, I simply put it together. So it came like a kit, but it's not commercially available. I hope the video will give you all the info you need, but if not let me know and I'll try to provide an answer. Good luck! 73 from 2E0MDO.
@iulianiasi OK what language is he speaking, then? It's certainly not Spanish... is it a regional dialect or something? Putting that information in would have been more helpful than typing "it sems that you are not so bright!" ;-)
@seaweedtotter yes you cocksucker indeed is italian , the problem is that that sentence has to be : "lol you think that's not italian :)))) ? " anyway thanks for sucking ;)

Which is best: wouxun uvd 1p or Midland CT-790
wouxun uvd 1p only costs about 90 USD on ebay! :)
Midland CT-790 really costs 300 USD! : (
Both have the same frequensy range, talk range and software. Everything looks quite the same the only difference I see is the price.
I myself have a wouxun uvd 1p with free shoulder mic, usb cable and software do I buyed it on ebay for only 105 USD! :)
And I'm quite pleased with it!
So I would suggest the (WOUXUN UVD 1p)
