Really good prog rock from the 70's.They never got muck airplay here in the states but like Vandergraff Generater they were great anyway. The vocals are a little differant from other prog of the times.
Saw them here in Belgium several times in the early '70. Never saw a singer like that since them. He's really a beast. Thanks for all that joy, Roger :-))
Who's the violin player? Wasn't he also one of The Animals? If so, he's the guy played in the violin in "When I Was Young"...if you watch the black n white video, it's got him in it.
OMG...was looking for Roger's voice ever since youtube started.....what a great find..thanks for posting this video!!!!!!!!!...there was and there is no one like him...was funny to watch his interview with Rick Wakeman...two old brits being polite...what has Rock come to?
They had such bad luck on one of their early tours to the US which did so much harm to their reputation here. First Ric Grech quits to join Blind Faith, Jim King flakes out, problems with US visas and then the infamous "Bill Graham mic stand incident". It's still unfortunate since they were one of the 70's most unique British bands. They were certainly better than Jethro Tull (or at least Tull after 1970).
@thatmuse76 Yep. They would have been. Chappo may have been the frontman, but it was his songwriting partnership with Whitney that made the band. They also were more accessible than Tull.
Nice to spend a few hours listening to "Family" favourites from 40 years ago! This band still impresses. Chapman's lunacy - you wouldn't want to be too close would you? - is still scary and the whole band often sounds ragged and undisciplined BUT: listen closely and they are (were) probably the tightest band around with a faultless rhythm section. Rob Townsend has to be considered one of the greatest drummers in rock.
Gabriel has said that his two biggest influences were Otis Redding AND Roger Chapman. I heard Family before Genesis and could clearly hear Chapman's influence on Gabriel.
Another cracking example of one of the greatest ever live bands. It was always fantastic to go along to all their gigs, especially when they came to the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and seeing them at the Isle of Wight. I've got all their autographs on their albums around the 70s.
Great live version of a Family classic. A studio version was put out as a maxi-single along with remixed versions of Hung Up Down (originally on Family Entertainment) along with another track from that LP, which is acknowledged as Family's anthem, The Weaver's Answer. It made the top-twenty in 1970. A live Strange Band appeared on the Anyway LP (1970). One side was live and the other studio. Note the Anyway T-shirt worn by Chappo in this vid to promote that album's tour.

I might be wrong, but I think it's Ric Grech, also bassist for Family and later Blind Faith.

I still think that if they had the right breaks they definitely could have gotten over in the US.

I agree Jethro Tull sucked in the 70's, was there a significant reason for that or did they just run out of ideas.

@thatmuse76 Jethro Tull got better after 1970.
