  • Wow! At least as good as the studio version!!!

  • Seems odd that we can't get a full length live version here ..must be one out there somewhere.

One of the all time classics ..top ten in R& R history amd all we can see is an abbreviated version ???

Maybe some one out there has it ???

  • It still one my all time favorites when I was young and even now. It such a kick ass song with nice beat. But if you listen to the words we're rockin to a song about Billy getting murdered.

  • I remember when I was young I use to dance with our refrigerater to this song ,this song was such a great song to dance the swing to ..

  • Once again solid white backup singers/chorus for an African-American performer.

  • Really? After a week of practice, homechick in the back couldn't keep the beat!?!

  • awesome

  • Love this song - classic. Lloyd Price and Matt 'guitar' Murphy could be brothers.

  • Probably the best song ever!!! God love Lloyd Price!!!

  • sweet to see the ones from the 50s and 60s still sounding good =)

  • I like

  • there are a lot of great versions of this classic song

  • I am sorry to rain on this Stagger Lee parade. But I am a BIG fan of Stargger Lee. And it just KILLS me that, back in the day, when a black entertainer appeared on TV, he was FORCED to "adjust" the rhythm of the song to the point where it's SOUL was ripped out! They did this with all black entertainers. They TRIED to do it with James Brown, but his stuff was so funky that it didn't work!

The 1959 version is better, and Tina turner's version is the best [in my opinion]

  • @schism4291 I don't beleive he adjusted his rhythm unless on his on, this was not a regular TV show. It was a Public Station and they had no reason to change Lloyd's rhythm. They were trying to gather donations and they had no commercial or corporate money backing them up. Thye were also trying to sell the DVD of the show. I remember this show on public TV.

  • @schism4291 This is a recent show and the DVD is still available thru your public TV station. I don't doubt they did what you said they did, but I believe not so on this concert. If it is slower, it may be that Lloyd is a bit slower as he ages. This has always been one of my favorite songs.

  • I am a huge metal head and I would listen to this over most of that stuff any day. And I'm 18.

  • Notice how many Afro-Americans on stage?...and they're using charts for chrissake,,,Huey and the boys did not use charts

  • Who would beleive a song about a pimp by the name of Stagger Lee Shelton in St.Louis Mo. would be a Rock and Roll classic.

  • My Home boy from New Orleans, Kenner...

  • Oh so many memories I had to get up and dance lie the good old days thanks..

  • @ccasia2008 i'm assuming you use the term "nigger" to just show color.i have the deepest respect for the music we have from the guidence and contribution of our black brothers and sisters.i'm also a big rock-a-billy fan.so thanks to the change to rock in the 50's

  • Only Billy gave this two thumb-downs.

  • Great artist!..I just love his enjoyment of his own music, after all of these years. I'm so glad he is still with us and performing so well...Love his energy!

  • my brother used to sing this to me ;) it's tough to have a name that rhymes with Stagger Lee ;) lol

  • He and my brother were friends in the Army way back in Korea (Special Services). I met Lloyd when my brother promoted a concert with him in Baltimore when I was kid (and a novice drummer). There was a tiny turnout but - what a show! I still remember his drummer's name: Tommy Dillon.

Lloyd Price - a lot of soul!

  • i luv this song i heard this when my mom played it in my grandmoms house i luved it i can sing the whole thing now by myself talk about the best music in the world it reminds me of home

  • Lloyd still looks good and has that bubbling personality he had when I saw him in the 60's. Great singer and showman..

  • Still has a good voice. Amazing

  • Yeah, that's Rock"n"Roll

  • Oh, the memories are flooding my Soul........................

Happy Birthday Mr. Price; may you enjoy many more.

  • I found this song on an old jukebox 18 years ago and have loved it ever since. When I think good old rock and roll, I think Lloyd Price's Stagger Lee. thank you thankyou thankyou thankyou. Huey Lewis did an awesome remake but this video shows that there is nothing like the original cat. I raise my glass and toast you Lloyd... You are the man!!!

  • This is a marvelous song. A beautiful voice.

  • Every bar in the USA, musicians want to play this beautiful song!!!! Why? It is becouse, was written to make people happy when they are dancing it!!!! Arica, CHILE

  • magic song

  • Lloyd Price is "Priceless."

I first heard him sing this song in the 50's and everytime it came on the jukebox, everyone in the room got up and danced.

So, get up off your seat everybody -- and DANCE. :)

    Dr. Don

  • Part Three

When his victim fell to the floor Sheldon took his hat from the hand of the wounded man and coolly walked away. He was subsequently arrested and locked up at the Chestnut Street Station. Lyons was taken to the Dispensary, where he eventually died of his injuries. Shelton was tried, convicted, and died in prison in 1912, of tuberculosis

  • Thanks for sharing that... it is fascinating.

  • Wow thanks for that info - never knew that!!!!

  • Part Two

Lyons and Sheldon were friends and were talking together. Both parties, it seems, had been drinking and were feeling in exuberant spirits. The discussion drifted to politics, and an argument was started, the conclusion of which was that Lyons snatched Sheldon's hat from his head. The latter indignantly demanded its return. Lyons refused, and Sheldon withdrew his revolver and shot Lyons in the abdomen.

  • Part One

The events depicted in the song took place in my home town of St. Louis Missouri. In fact it happened a mere few blocks from where I now live.

    St. Louis Globe-Democrat article:

(Events took place on Christmas Eve 1895)

William 'Billy' Lyons, 25, a levee hand, was shot in the abdomen yesterday evening at 10 o'clock in the saloon of Bill Curtis, at Eleventh and Morgan Streets, by 'Stagger' Lee Sheldon, a carriage driver..

  • This is a great song and singer. Love this and him singing Personality.

  • Damn he still rocks

  • When this concert please ? Date ? TY :)

  • Yes, it's a story about Sragger Lee, a cab driver who shot a man Billy at a bar in the 1890s

  • Did they have a cabs back in 1890 ? I think he shot someone on a stagecoach.

  • great , but to fast

  • wow great one of my favoite songs

  • tv started the gang wars should have left it in cali

  • do you have an mp3 of this song please

  • it this a true story

  • What year was this from? Mr. Price aged very well!

  • It's from 1959. Price was 26 when he recorded it, and he's 76 now.

  • He must be taking care of himself.

  • Original originator indeed

  • this is the version I remember, and thanks again for the good info.

  • still sounds the same.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY Lloyd ! Never lost it !

  • His 76th birthday will be here in a few days.

  • thanks for posting this I have been looking for the words to this song for a long time.

  • There are different versions of this song. There is the version where Stag shoots Billy and then there is the version where Stag makes up with Billy. I think Dick Clark had something to do with this. He didn't want anything this violent sung on American Bandstand so Lloyd Price and Harold Logan rewrote part of the song where Stag makes up with Billy.

  • wow I've never heard the tame version. I'd like to. thanx
