It was when the music generation was taken over by the Rock Generation who decided to jettitsson all music associated with their parents. Out went "functional music". Only problem is there are some of us from the same generation who understand and appreciate the benefits of both Beautiful & Functional music. I'm usually out the door within minutes whenever I visit a store that plays that loud, distracting creppe! Bring back Muzak...the way it ought to be!
This was used in the '70's in a sitcom where Jack Klugman played a gay crack addict and a young tom Hanks played his computer nerd sidekick who invents the internet.
I've been searching for a such a long time for some real Muzak elevator style music like this... I know we're supposed to hate Muzak but for some reason I like this one. I even made a beat out of it (on my channel, but I seriously don't mean to spam)
IIRC, this song is Lady Blue by Leon Russell, given away to me by the first six notes of the melody. Nobody could drawl quite like LR, which made his, er, high notes sound pretty funny.
This beats the crappy background music that is played these days in supermarkets and the like! I fondly remember Muzak! Please dump the current stuff and bring this back! I'm convinced it'll curb shoplifting, because the turds that shoplift will either fall asleep listening to this or they'll run screaming from the store after they hear this! All kidding aside, this is really good music to me!
Thanks for posting these tracks. I'd been reading a 1980 interview with Jane Jarvis, a former VP of Muzak, and was curious to hear the atrocity that was muzak. And it sounds innocuous and inoffensive. Odd! Actually, the carefully plotted mix of popular songs that assaults current retail and restaurant shoppers ain't much better! I'd almost rather listen to this. At least there's some nostalgia value in the 70's orchestra and the Fender Rhodes!

Thumbs up if you hate comments where people say something bland, followed by "thumbs up if you agree with me"

@musclen2phat you are right.. I am a professional shop lifter and I am always amazed how the people are hypnotized when such a music is in a loop
