i've been looking 4 a song i heard on the radio in late '94. acoustic guitar, singer sounds just like Juliana, but NONE of her songs so far have been the 1 i remember. lyrics(sound like): i'm doing very well by myself, mother, get out of this house...? any help identifying this would b greatly appreciated(already tried scanning discographies & used every search engine) i got nothing.
@mouthofknives it was The Sundays "Don't Tell Your Mother", which was a B side to their first 12" single ("Can't Be Sure" along with "I Kicked A Boy"). Awesome band from the UK. I saw them in London supporting Throwing Muses in (I think) 1990 and they very nearly upstaged Throwing Muses.
I'm sure then that you have never listened to Brena Lee's song... How I know this???... Because this has nothing to do with Brenda Lee's song, this is a completely different song
It's worth noting that this track is from the same album as her song "Ugly." Juliana has always said that her songs are not necessarily biographical, but it's still been pretty clear that, at least then, she was unaware of how pretty she was. Then, we're all our own worst critics, I guess. In any event, I suspect it was her decision to somewhat obscure her face - see the album cover also - which is somewhat distorted.
Thanks so much for posting this! It means a lot to me and other fans too I'm sure. The 90's were it, and now there so so gone. But we still have videos for evidence.
This was a really good album.

@mouthofknives I believe the song may have been Tracy Bonham's "Mother Mother" It was also covered by The Veronicas in 2005

Juliana is an incredible songwriter, puts on a hell of a live show, and her book is not bad, either.

This has absolutely nothing to do with Brenda Lee's song except for the title of the song.

don't think she likes being the center of attention. songs stand up for themselves anyway, especially from this remarkable album.

this is such an underrated song!

Why did they obscure this beautiful woman's face during that video? Same thing in a couple of her other videos as well.
