I always thought that Hellfrost sounds very cool. I was waiting for the complete 3 volume set to hit stores before I give it a try. Now that they are released I'll try and talk my players into this.
One of the dozens of other systems about... Shadowrun, some GURPS products, the new Dragon Age game, the Age of War BETA... I know he has a hard on for Savage Worlds and that's okay for him as a player, but as a reviewer you can't just review one system and every single supplement and adventure to come out for it.
He might as well change the name of the program to "Savage Worlds Geek" and be done with it.
Try not being so hard. Just ask and he will probably listen if you give constructive comment. When you say Dragon Age, you mean the RPG on computer? I think the point of this channel is to talk about pen and paper RPG.
For the Savage World thing, I agree that he should review something else now. Its clear that this is one of his favorite system. But we don't need a review where all you see is the same system always reviewed under different names.
@PsyckoSama I think it was appropriate to review these adventures now, as two new Hellfrost hardbacks (Hellfrost: Bestiary and Hellfrost: Gazetteer) have just been released, so the interest in the game is on the rise.
What I would really like to see is a review of the new Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Core Set from Fantasy Flight Games. It's a fabulous game.
@PsyckoSama By claiming it is a board game you are showing your ignorance on the subject matter. It's one of the brightest new roleplaying games on the market, and provides a great infrastructure for roleplaying-intensive sessions.
Its 100 dollars of easily lost periphery items based around a central gimmick dependent on even more easily lost periphery items that due to its structure is unplayable online.
To play an RPG, ideally you should only need a rule Book, dice, a pencil, and a note book. Splat books and nicely printed sheets help but you can theoretically do without them. This fails that test. Its a board game.
Just like OD&D? If you lost the dice you could not play the game. You would have to buy a whole new set.
Or that roleplaying game that uses a Chess set for resolution mechanics? Is it a roleplaying game or a board game? It's obviously a roleplaying game. While I'm not a fan of the game or the business model, I have a hard time believing it's not what it says on the box.
So Savage Worlds is a card game, because it uses game cards for initiative resolution? And the cards don't even come with the game (nor does the dice). With the new Warhammer you get everything you need to play the game inside the box: dice, character sheets, character standups (no need to buy miniatures or paper cutouts) and, of course, 4 gorgeous rule books for players and GM. The price on Amazon is $62.97, as opposed to D&D 4E set which is $66.12 (and doesn't include dice or miniatures).
A standard deck of playing cards is acceptable as you can buy two of them for dollar in most places and if you happen to loose a card you can can just buy another deck for the price of a candy bar and don't have to shell out another one large (the suggested retail value) for a replacement boxed set.
Tell me, do you work for fantasy flight because you sure as hell sound like you're trying to sell a product.
No, I actually work for a well-known video game developer in Europe, and we've been really enjoying the new Warhammer at the studio. I've been playing roleplaying games for 23 years now and have a wide base for comparison when I say that Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd edition is a really good roleplaying game.
Regarding replacement parts - I'm sure that Fantasy Flight Games will make those available through their website at some point soon, at least in digital printable versions.
Palladium isn't mainstream anymore. They have not significantly changed the system since the early 90's, and are not the major players they once were. That being said I liked Palladium fantasy back then.
Shadowrun isn't much more mainstream, but does still have a loyal following.
At the same time, I want reviews of stuff I haven't heard of, this place is where I find out about lesser known RPGs I can get later.
Well, in the 80's it was D&D, king of RPGs. Quest driven, and with a system almost entirely based on combat.
In the 90s there were 2 stages:
1. Systems to do everything: Rifts, GURPS, Shadowrun.
2. Character driven games: White Wolf was the undisputed king of this.
In the 2000s, it was all about d20 making everything comparable and open licensed on one side, and with more "indie" RPGs with very narrow focus on the other.
We have more big production games than before, like Eclipse Phase, CthulhuTech, Rogue Trader and Dark Heresy, nWOD, Warhammer FR 3e, maaaybee Alpha Omega, we have a new Shadowrun edition (and since i haven't played Shadowrun ever, i like seeing the game more streamlined and modernized, and I'd like it reviewed), CthulhuTech, Eclipse Phase, Burning Wheel/Empires...
the thing is, there are so many games out there and Kurt is only mostly reviewing Savage Worlds when there's a lot out there.
I do not disagree that he does a little too much Savage Worlds. I'd like to hear what he has to say about Gumshoe, or Mortal Coils, smaller run stuff I can't browse at a game store.
Yes, maybe both things, because here in Mexico i don't have a Gamestore to browse at, I can buy things at Amazon and then pick them up in the US but in the end, reviews is all we have, and the more diverse the better.
Hellfrost is a great setting. Wiggy thought out some great differences to the standard fantasy campaign. The different cultures presented in the player's guide are pretty rich as is, but then get added on in the Gazeteer. I am going through Lair of the Vermin Lord as a player and will be able to review it more later. So far, having fun.
I just ran these for my group, they are a great introduction to Hellfrost and Savage Worlds.

Seriously Kurt I want to enjoy your show.
However, if you keep endorsing such obscure games and ignore the mainstream (Palladium, Shadowrun, etc.) I will completely loose interest.
