Im watching this on my samsung galaxy note (super amoled) and i can tell you that the blacks are amazing and the blues are great aswell. Cant wait for an oled laptop.
Personally I prefer the CRT HD to LED HD. The OLED is too bright and no warmth. I wonder if organic screens will decay over time since organic does decay?
@1diamondboy Yes OLED do decay which is one big reason its taking so long to make OLED TVs, because their life span is lower than LCD. That is why they came to phones first, because if your phone screen only lasts 1-2 years few people would care, but if your HDTV only lasted a few years you might be rather annoyed.
I get how OLED is going to be the future since its combining the best of plasma and led technology but once we get to 4k resolution for the price wouldn't it be much better to get a 4k projector since you would actually want a 150 inch screen for ultimate experience?
Once we get 4k material coming out projectors are gonna be easily the best because it's gonna take forever for huge 100 inch+ oled 4 k tv's to come out for 5 k or less...... which is what you need basically for 4 k resolution
@smack9923 no, imagine OLED becoming so cheap it could be used as wallpaper, touchscreen wallpaper. You could customize the position and shape of a "light bar"(light source) and make custom picture frames and instantly choose the size, crop and position without ever going to get film developed or hammering one nail into your wall. Hell, you could have a new mural everyday. This is not crazy considering that they all ready produce OLED today with giant modified ink-jet printers.
1.) OLEDs are only expensive right now because they're new. It has nothing to do with the manufacturing process or price of the components that make up the display. The manufacturing process itself is actually known to be much cheaper and easier than LCD, so the prices will eventually drop below the current LCD prices.
2.) The lifespan of OLED at this time is very short (14,000 hours at half brightness vs 40,000 hours for LCD).
3.) OLEDs have a much faster response time than LCD
Ok, I'll do a swap. Here's a question in exchange for an answer.
Answer (see wikipedia)
The organic name is from the chemical technology derived from bioluminescence technology takken from things like jellyfish. Vaguely similar research has made glow in the dark cats, mice etc. (but via genetics).

Thank You Chris For Pointing Out The Pros And Cons Or OLED'S To LED'S, You Have Now Explained What This Was, Sorry For Calling It Organic, But Was Trying To Remember What It Was,
Apart From The Laughing, I Now See It Myself, Or Perhaps It Might Have Something To Do With The Solar Lights, As Gasses Put Into The Device Itself.
@crazy40906 retina displays use higher pixels per square inch then standard displays... So you do not see each individual pixel like you can on larger TV's and almost every phone before the iPhone 4... Look closely at the iphone 4 screen and compare it to any other screen and see if you can see individual pixels from about 6-8" away :)
"organic" in this context is a chemistry term. It simply means that the compound that makes the pixels contains Carbon. For example, organic chemistry means chemistry involving compounds containing carbon. LCD and LED uses crystals that don't contain carbon.
Organic in this context is referring to carbon containing materials rather than non-synthetic materials found in nature that we would often associate with plants and animals.
White leds are UV leds coated with phosphors. Blue is also the hardest to produce un naturally in lighting. This is why when anything screen burns, its usually the blue going first. It burns the first in DLP, and LCD projection, marks the quickest in RPCRT and OLED displays, and before the violet was used in bluray, it was actually blue but only had a life of several hundred hours. Its the doping that causes the violet color and long life. Blue leds also have a sucky life span.
@iDirtyMx An AMOLED is an Active Matrix OLED. The active matrix is the how each pixel is addressed. By using an active matrix rather than a passive matrix, you eliminate the high currents required, which allows you to make it low on power consumption, as well as easier to manufacture larger OLED screens. I believe it is also cheaper to produce than passive matrix OLED screens as well, but I am not sure on that one.
@iDirtyMx they're the same thing :P the AM only specifies the way in which the screen is lit by the processing, its stands for active matrix, and thats really the only way to light them, so AMOLED is the same as OLED really.
So, in this case, the LED design IS the screen, and vice versa.
I have theories as to the Organic portion, but I won't post, in fear of Wikipedia proving me wrong.
All I have to say is this: It's ironic that this technology, basically, acts identical to a CRT, where the screen elements ARE what produces the light.
Oh phosphorous coated vacuum tube... how I love you.
@kurisux Oh, wait, just saw a thing on TV about it: Organic uses, as I was thinking "organic compounds" between electrodes, which creates what is fundamentally an LED, but it has color capacity, etc.... :D
does he have an iphone app that gives you lots of tech information? It would be awesome if he had one so we get all the information he knows right in the palm of my hand :-)
@ClinchMovies I believe it does use less power because if you recall, if its going to display black, the OLED will turn off totally, thus consuming less energy. So say you're watching a widescreen film where you have black bars on the top and bottom, the OLED will be turned off for the bars. Quote me if I'm wrong, but I believe that's the concept on how OLED will consume less power.
Sweet Jesus, i just checked the price on LED outdoor flood lights, they want $60.00 per light and it says it replaces a 100 watt incandescent bulb, the back yard alone has 4 flood lights, the side has 2 on each side of the house so 8 x $60.00 = $480.00 for 8 bulbs i can get for about $36.00 using regular 100 watt halogens .... the ones in place now have been working for 5 years. why would i spend close to $500.00 for LED, sell me on it ?
@yellowgroove reason LED lights are so much is they consume less power... They are not popular at this point and the idea of wanting such an expensive price for LED lights is just as unpopular...
The way my DAD explained it is the LED light should be around for last for 100+ years.... He said that it would outlive us more then likely. But since people can't make more money off of it breaking they want you to pay for its longevity up front... Yes you can buy halogen lights for far less.

@iTech004 Super AMOLED is amazing technology. However the retina display has a higher PPI than the Samsung Epic 4g. Also, the early Super AMOLED's have lots of defects such as yellow tints or blue tints.
The iPhone 4's retina display (IPS) has more realistic colors than the Samsung, and the Samsung is has really high contrast.
In all honesty, they're both great however I'd like to see a Super AMOLED Retina combined.
straight from wikipedia: An organic light emitting diode (OLED) is a light-emitting diode (LED) in which the emissive electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compounds which emit light in response to an electric current.
I think (Just guessing) It's called organic LED because the fact that it's not being used with an LCD. It's by itself, nothing added, organic. Am I right?
until then, I'm happy with my IPS NEC monitor. I'll save my 5k for something more useful.

@0501701 organic doesn't refer to "grown in your backyard" but it refers to the use of carbon atoms in the pixels.

Then what is AMOLED?
Aljoshin12 6 months ago
I think (Just guessing) It's called organic LED because the fact that it's not being used with an LCD. It's by itself, nothing added, organic. Am I right?
