How's the shift quality? People always wax on about how much better a manual is but if the linkage is sloppy with long throws, id rather have an auto.
it is the 1.8. i got the strip model '09 with the 1.8 and five speed and it pulls the same as this car. fun car to drive but gets really lazy after about 65-70 mph
naaaaa i dont get cut off because a bought a performens ship and it can reach the top speed, you get cut off when you have the stock ship in your car .
compare to many nowadays, 5speed is just so-so, i drive the 09 corolla S which only has 4 speed; however, toyota has excellent transmission quality so even though it's behind on the number of gears trend, i know it's reliable for 300,000km (typical numbers for driving instructor cars that uses corolla)
Same powertrain, but gearing on the TC is tighter, so I would give the edge to the TC, although i have not been in the new corolla yet so I am a little biased.
nice, yeah we could start to expect see more corollas and matrixs hit the 300hp+ mark with 2.4 then now come with. sucks that toyota took out lift but atleast we got a bigger motor.
yeah, totally. i was dissappointed test driving the 09 XRS after 4 years driving a turbo'd celica GTS (same 2zz-ge engine as old XRS). but, the new 2.4 has more torque at lower RPMs than the 2zz, and will easily make 300+ HP once u stick a turbo in it. i still like my turbo GTS tho ^^
yeah the 2.4 is a great platform for modifications....get a tc supercharger kit and you got 200+ horsepower and more torque.....2.4= 158 hp/162 ft.lbs, 1.8(corolla xrs version)= 167hp/127 ft.lbs
speaking of which, my friend just got an 09 matrix XRS with the 5 speed. he dropped a garett turbo in it and has about 280 HP at the wheels. and i tell ya, that thing feels more like an MR2. hes modding it more with custom parts from my cousin in japan, and should have 350+ HP soon. my celica GTS still smokes him, tho wit 497HP at the wheel. suprised my motor didnt blow XD
i have the 05 xrs and it is faster then the 10th gen.stock to stock, but from what i have seen the 2az can make more hp in the long run. you can drop a turbo and make 300hp on stock internals for around 3000$ stil its upsetting that lift is gone
it sucks that they got rid of lift :(..it was like vtec on Crack!! lol
luckyranadey775 1 year ago
why didn't you stick to the 6 speed?
chlee09 1 year ago
Toyota should just use the 2.5 in the rav-4 in this. it makes 179 hp. 172 tq.

Shifting without a shiftknob must've sucked ass! Hey is that a hydraulic clutch? Sounded like wheelspin.. or "wheelsqueal" going into third!

the lift is what made the corolla better than the others...

the odd part about it is toyota still makes the 2zz for the exige. why couldnt they have put it back in here?

tommieboi707 3 years ago
2009 corolla is kool, but I prefer the 2005 XRS. the 2005 had the celica GTS motor which is the 2ZZ motor, more potential then the 2009.
XxSuperAdamxX 3 years ago 2
i heard that the previous xrs motor is too polluting so they replaced it with the new 2.4L engine.
lowincash 3 years ago
the 2.4L engine isnt new. its just a camry motor which has been around since 2000 or 01
bdub215 3 years ago
yeah its not new but has been redesigned with new technology. so in a way it is a new motor
armando2004 3 years ago
yup.
armando2004 3 years ago
well for power yes the previous xrs is faster, but im sure a newly developed corolla engine will have a longer life span than a celica engine

I heard that "shift-knob" story before ...
FlySwoony 4 years ago
Dealers remove the shift knobs because people steal them.
Shifting with a shifter the girth of a pencil does affect the way you shift.

does it have the vtec that kicks in all of a sudden like on the civic Si? sounds like it...
