WKW makes the same movie over and over again, but each time cuts the same story a little differently, maybe to gain new insight. I don't mind this. If you've lived a full life, you know what these characters are feeling: guilt when someone pines for you but you can't return it; the longing when the roles are reversed; what happens when it all clicks and you get relief; and what you feel when there's no closure. Good stuff.

WKW is a major artist. Like a painter who continues to create variations within a distinct style, and then moves on. Yes, this film reemploys music and, apparently, set design from 2046, yet it's still a wonderful evocation of WKW's idiosyncatric signature. I can easily picture Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung's character) penning this melodramatic tale while lusting or yearning after a neighbor or old lover.

Wong Kar Wai 's works often contain a consistant style and messages, that is the characters in the stories are often blinded by love, and the attachment of such often leads to misery and suffering. If he is repeating this, well.... many great artists repeat themselves, and what is wrong with that? ,
