well actually this performance was in DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Rpublik) Ex Soviet part of Germany. clapping hands wasnt really prohibited but in general soviet people believed that expressing emotions in a *wild* way (like shouting during the performance, vigorous clapping, slamming down into the viewers areas off the stage, dancing too energetically and shaking your head) is something inappropriate for the soviet audience =)

Anyway the Russian stages were very big and beautiful according to the standards from the 80's.
