I am from Pittsburgh, but I bled Whaler green and blue. I listened to Whalers games on WTIC AM 1080 for years. I wore the Whalers' 93-94 jersey. I was disgusted when Karmanos moved the team to Raleigh. Memo to Bettman: ignore that idiot from Hamilton, let Hamilton enjoy the AHL Bulldogs, and have the Coyotes move to Hartford, and have the Wolf Pack move to Glendale, Arizona. I WANT MY HARTFORD WHALERS BACK. BRING THE PHOENIX COYOTES TO HARTFORD!
They couldn't the then Charlotte Coliseum did not have the ability to hold a hockey game. They would have played at the original Charlotte Coliseum which was built in the 1950s. Although that would have been a very interesting venue the years they would have played there.
the whalers ceremony was just a joke so the wolf pack could get people to see hockey and start to come watch the games to get atendence up, but it didn't work, now did it?
I guess now you have to retire Pat Verbeek and Mike Luit's numbers and maybe then the wolfpuke will try to mend fences with the bitter Whalers fans from the Whalermania of the late 80s. The wolfpuke need to leave Hartford.
I miss the Whalers. I would like to see the NHL back in CT., but not at the expense of the Hurricanes. Right now, I support the Columbia (South Carolina) Inferno (ECHL) and hope we get our new arena soon. The USC GameCOCKS (yes that's their real name!) are throwing us out of their arena. Be grateful for the Wolfpack. It's better than no Hockey at all!
You are 100% correct and one of the reasons that they hated eachother. If the Whalers fans were more dedicated, the Whalers might've still been around, but then again, I doubt it. But don't tell "Captfransis" this, he has the Whalers so far up his ass about the Whalers he avoids this fact.
Whaler fans never supported the team, their attendance was almost always dead last in the league. I don't blame Karmanos for moving the team out of Hartford. Hartford is a tiny market people, in other words, it sucked for trying to run a hockey team.
Take a look at the attendance sheets since the Whalers came into the league, they are dead last or near the bottom almost every year. I didn't say they didn't have their loyal, diehard fans like yourself, I am saying that your type was far and few between for most of the Whalers exsistence.
Before the new Boston Garden/Fleet Center/whatever was built in Boston, the sarcastic slogan was "Who needs a new Boston Garden when we have the Hartford Civic Center." The fact remains that during home Whalers games against the Bruins, there were more fans cheering for Boston.
I'll have to agree, somewhat. But, if it weren't for the Atlanta Flames, we wouldn't have the Calgary Flames. Raleigh, NC. is a multicultured city and far from "hick" I live in South Carolina, and I can tell THIS is where the hicks are. With that said, I support our Columbia Inferno ECHL team with all my heart.
As far as the NHL is concerned, I like the Hurricanes, although most people down here never have heard of them! Columbia SC, is actually closer to Atlanta than Raleigh. People here are too hung up on friggen college football to care about hockey! I appreciate all the efforts involved bringing hockey south so a CT. yankee like me can go enjoy the greatest sport ever!
Yeah. Note how the video stops before you notice that there are now about 12 or 15 Wolf Pack Division, Conference, and League banners in the same rafters.
I was a fan of the Whalers. I had no problem becoming a fan of the Wolf Pack. Then I moved outside of Allentown, PA . . .and there is NO hockey. I have to drive 1.5 hours to Philly or 1 hour to Hershey. Ick.
2 of the retired numbers ironically were traded to Pittsburgh in 1991 (Francis and Samuelsson)
Bring back the Whalers, Jets, and Nords (but mostly the Jets)

Why don't you want them back? Hartford Deserves more than minor league. just ask the 20,000+ who bought season tickets at least once in their life.

Heh, Funny how Hartford can't wait to get a NHL team back, and could give a shit less if it keeps the Wolfpack or not...
Actually it's not so much funny as it is sad.

I was there too, if you don't want the NHL back in Hartford you should be shot in the head.

Wow. That looks like a great ceremony honoring the Whalers. It's too bad they're not still around.

The arena itself must have cried with Brass Bonanza being played; the jerseys going up and people belting out "Lets go Whalers!"
