fussy for the brits means being obsessive over things or doing things ie. tidying. Or being awkward over things like being a "fussy eater" wont eat certain things. or to smother or make " a fuss" or fussing over someone.
@misskiya People from Barbados are Barbadians. I'd know because I'm Barbadian myself. :) Bajan is a colloquial (street) term, however Barbadian is the official term. It's just like when people from Trinidad and Tobago call themselves Trinis. The demonym for a person from Trinidad and Tobago is Trinidadian, however the colloquial term would be Trini.

@sexylusciousc You can't expect people to know that you can't get mad at someone for asking you that like seriously. That's not other people culture you can't get mad at their ignorance Americans DO NOT learn about W.I.'s all we know and learn is that Carribean black people were dropped off before we were on the boat they don't give history lessons on languages and all that. So instead of being rude about it just explain it I had a Guyanese and Jamaican guy explained the whole(Continued comment)
@sexylusciousc Patois language to me and I never asked again because they gave me a proper understanding of it. So with that being said instead of letting it get you irritated recognize that in school in America there is little to no talk about Carribean people. So being that I'm African American theres still stuff I haven't learned about black history in America let alone W.I. black people. So bare with it and educate people you learn something new everyday just explain it..
I agree with you 100%! Someone once told a fellow West Indian friend of mine "You don't act like other black girls." She didn't know what to tell them. Matter of fact, my dad was mad when he found out about Chris Brown beating Rihanna - my dad said Rihanna should have gotten a nice Bajan man to treat her RIGHT. Truth is, it's just like you say: we got MORALS!
hmm.....i'm from tobago and i feel like i need to say that NONE of the caribbean islanders speak 'broken english'. that's an understandable misconception we have been taught, but its about time we get that right! aryuh a hear wah ma seh?
@leelovefi They just put a little twist to certain words and even spell it different. Plus give things their own name and meaning to it. YAY! Caribbean!!!
I'm Guyanese and I hate when someone asks me to say something in "Guyanese." It is not a different language, just broken English! And what should one say really? Smh. And then everyone else's dumbfounded reaction when they realize they are able to understand if they listen carefully.
@mszRudegyaL Linguistically, it is not merely a dialect, it is a creole. Many creoles are more different than Norwegian is from Swedish. The vocabulary and grammar of creoles is often sufficiently different from English as to be incomprehensible. It is definitely NOT "broken English" (there is nothing "broken" about it) and it is NOT standard English. It is technically an English-based Creole, on the borderline of being called a separate language, but for political power.
@mszRudegyaL Sorry, did I seem aggressive? I didn't mean to. It's difficult to gauge and judge the strength of what you say when merely typing (no stress, intonation or facial expressions to mitigate misunderstandings)...
@mszRudegyaL Anyway, one of my points is that people often disparage creoles as "broken English" or "broken French", even though, but for political power, they could be classed as different langauges with their complex grammar and sufficiently different lexis.
We often forget that world languages like English & French started life as creoles.
English was the language of trade that evolved out of a mix between Anglo-Saxon & Viking traders on the east coast of England, it was further creolised in 1066 when it mixed with Norman French (which was itself a creole of French & Viking).
French was effectively the "broken" way a certain Germanic tribe spoke Latin. It was based on a mix between vulgar "street" Latin & Frankish (a German dialect).
@mszRudegyaL More info: Haitian Creole and Tok Pisin have language status (you learn Creole at school, *not* French & you can even learn them on official Rosetta & Pimsleur CDs)...
...but Barbadian Creole (Bajan) & Jamaican Creole (Patwa) do not. In fact even on these islands the dialects are stigmatised as "bad English" & children cannot learn them at school. In my grandmother's day they were even slapped if they spoke it. I don't know about the situation today.
that female interviewer could only be a retard. i'm sure she comes from an area where they speak some form of creole too. stupes. that's bajan for. 'she could only be an idiot'
jeesh the 2 interviewers are BEYOND STUPID!!!!! Did they not do research to see that Barbados is an English speaking island and the Black girl should know better what an asshat!
Bajan is just what we Barbadians call ourselves and our dialect, but to people outside of our country, it's better to say Barbadian dialect, Barbadian slang. Until you explain to them later about the word Bajan, then you can start saying Bajan dialect, or Bajan slang.
So what the user put in the description is absolutely fine. Of course so many people have said this same thing I'm sure so many times on here LOL. I just felt like saying something :p.
I mean i can understand that the other afro American people don't know where they really are from. So can't blame them to not be able to say that they are proud of . . . But i would even be happy if they tell that they also are african ppl.
I'm loving Rihanna. Her Voice , her accent , her way to be proud of her country.
huh...wtf is rhianna day.....aint no rhianna day in barbados....the day they make her birthday a bank holidah is the day it would be rhianna day..until den stfu

@StrictlyRihanna I know alot of bajans that refer to themselves and friends as barbadians and talk about their barbadian dialect so its not like no one says that. :) I am bajan but I havent lived there for years so dont speak with a strong accent or in the same dialect but yh barbadian is not wrong and is not, not used lol X
wow, that reporter is a ass, she believe that ppl in the Caribbean speak a different language, because am from the Bahamas also and we speak English so u cud understand me, before u report sometime do research plz

In Bajan you could also say "Dah dog cute nuh". Dah = That. and the nuh is like the Canadian "eh" or "Australian aye?" It just means like do you follow/understand?
@khangastain ..actually....Barbadian IS THE CORRECT term..BUT NO ONE SAYS THAT...we just say Bajan,,,but "barbadian" isn't incorrect...the same way we say Trinidadian (trini or T&T) Vincentian (Vincy), Guyanese (GT) etc....and you are 1/2 bajan but 100% YANKEE lol...
We Caribbean ppl don't speak broken/bad English we speak Our Native Caribbean tongue with our own versions of Grammatical Principles that's all. A crack head English man speaks bad English not Caribbean ppl.
So Alyuh cud jus go so it alyuh outta timin self i tried ah ppl always sayin we talkin bad english stupzz
@JanielleAG I am bajan and I dont get offended by broken english, because it is broken english. ie. it is the english language but we miss out alot of words which makes it broken english. xx
@hannah120288 Ok i understand that but that's not what I am saying. As a linguist, there are terms for what the layman calls bad or broken English. It is just a matter of a lack of awareness that this same langugae that is called broken is actually a language.
@ebadavey I AGREE.what is rihanna saying?..Bad english?.....we speak a DIALECT, but we can also speak "proper english)...every West Indian Person(English caribbean) speak English...we just have different dialects and accents...but we can understand each other.....yes me tired ah people ah chat bout we nah kno fi speak...lol...BOOM island people connect
@ebadavey Technically there is no such thing as "Native Caribbean tongue" because almost NONE of the current inhabitants of the Caribbean are natives unless you're Amerindian. Blacks are not native, whites are not native, Asians are not native therefore there is no such thing as "native caribbean tongue" Yes we do speak a broken English, its not bad per se. Each island has their own dialect.
@kemoblue4u I don't think that you could call it "broken english"... I mean Bajan Creole is regarded to be a fully fledged language, with its own grammar and English as its basic lexifier... its different, yes, but not broken
lol shit....black people in america say that. "girl look at dat boy ova there. HE CUTE!" no big difference there. but i know bajans...like all west indians have their little dialect and it sounds WAYYY different from the english spoken here, even the way black people here speak. they take broken english to another level lol.
@khodia16 lol i agree.thats so true-especially when they make parodies of rihanna and the girl sounds like a jamaican. all i'm thinking is wrong country ppl.
@poohkbbear Some Barbadians talk like if they from Jamaica... "Me na gwannnnn" dis and "me na gwannnn" dat and I does have to ask them to repeat themselves....
We say the same thing in America. I'm from D.C. & we never say " He is so cute" we ALWAYS say "He cute". Or the people I know always says that. Shit I say that. She cute, he cute. Whatever.
@asd2wvacbuw so do you all also say: "you cuh onstan wuh i sain?"(can you understand what I am saying?) or, "wuh wunna talkin bout?"(What are you all talking about?) or even "gine on b?"(How are you?) and "da look nasty den!",(That looks really dirty!) "cheese on bread!"(an exclamation which varies according to context), "wuh loss!"(omg), "she ain fuh real?"(she is not being serious?), "she head caan be good"(her mind is not well), "fuh trute?"(is that true?), "part you is?"(where are you?)
@bajanteen212 i am sure he or she doesn't lol but that person has to remember that although they may say "he/she cute" it's not going to be said in the same tone and accent as a bajan would say it
@malimal87 Imma girl. But yea that's what I mean. We say stuff kinda similar to that but we don't have that strong accent & we don't say it in the tone or accent. But we do say " he/she cute" & other slang. But yea.
@bajanteen212 Nope! Bajans got some ironic slang. That's kool tho. But we got some cut up slang but it ain't like yalls. Trust me. U act like I was disrespectin Bajans or something. Btw..I love Rih. But yea we don't say all that. For example our cut up slang is :
" Who is you"?? or " You Wellin" ( You Lyin ), "Kirkin" ( To go crazy or flip out. doing too much), "Hop On" (Copy cat). " Why you hycin" or " Why you hypin shit" ( To make somethin more than it is. over exaggerating) . Stuff like dat.
thank you Rhianna we people in the Caribbean do speak English.. but we prefer to speak it broken.. now people can stop saying people in the Caribbean can't speak English...
hmmmmm, I'm Barbadian, 100% born and raised and I wouldn't necessarily have worded that as 'really bad english'. It's our local way of speaking, just cuz its 'broken' like other forms of broken language e.g. creole etc. dosen't mean its 'really bad'. It's uniquley us! She's been groomed to present herself a certain way to the world and has now become detached from the country which she once called home. Another soul lost!
@mikestamlo I'm Jamaican and we speak Jamaica too...but the majority of Jamaicans see our language as bad English too. I love patwa...dem can gwaan lol. In a sense, the Englishmen succeeded in getting black people (In the Caribbean) to hate themselves, and their culture, and aspire to adopting a "White mentality". As Bob say..."Emancipate yourself from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our mind" A just we now need fi accept our language as a good thing u zeet. So would say i blame her.
@makedijaa jamaica is not a language..lol,that's our country. The language is patois,or as we call patwa.Just addressing what you stated "I'm Jamaican and we speak Jamaica too"
@joefurzton Who cares what you think about my country, your opinion means nothing.I'm not the immature one going around telling people their country sucks.Do yourself a favor & Grow up.
She is so awesome :)

So Alyuh cud jus go so it alyuh outta timin self i tried ah ppl always sayin we talkin bad english stupzz
ebadavey 1 year ago 38
@ebadavey I dont think broken english is offensive because thats what it is but I prefer my own term english with a caribbean twist x
hannah120288 7 months ago
@hannah120288
as caribbean ppl we don't speak broken English... We speak either T&T creole, Bajan Creole, Jam Creole etc...
JanielleAG 7 months ago
@JanielleAG I am bajan and I dont get offended by broken english, because it is broken english. ie. it is the english language but we miss out alot of words which makes it broken english. xx

@hannah120288 Ok i understand that but that's not what I am saying. As a linguist, there are terms for what the layman calls bad or broken English. It is just a matter of a lack of awareness that this same langugae that is called broken is actually a language.
JanielleAG 7 months ago
@JanielleAG ok calm down lol im not bieng argumentative x
hannah120288 7 months ago
@hannah120288 sorry :)
I just get this way when I think about teh rich linguistic background of our Caribbean people :)

16Mind 6 months ago
@ebadavey Technically there is no such thing as "Native Caribbean tongue" because almost NONE of the current inhabitants of the Caribbean are natives unless you're Amerindian. Blacks are not native, whites are not native, Asians are not native therefore there is no such thing as "native caribbean tongue" Yes we do speak a broken English, its not bad per se. Each island has their own dialect.
kemoblue4u 6 months ago 20
@kemoblue4u I really do agree.
And even it's broken or not i love your way speaking it.
KekeDanceTv 4 months ago
@kemoblue4u I don't think that you could call it "broken english"... I mean Bajan Creole is regarded to be a fully fledged language, with its own grammar and English as its basic lexifier... its different, yes, but not broken
ShqiptareMeGjak 1 month ago 3
@kemoblue4u even amerindians are not native, they migrated using the bering strait.

lol shit....black people in america say that. "girl look at dat boy ova there. HE CUTE!" no big difference there. but i know bajans...like all west indians have their little dialect and it sounds WAYYY different from the english spoken here, even the way black people here speak. they take broken english to another level lol.

We say the same thing in America. I'm from D.C. & we never say " He is so cute" we ALWAYS say "He cute". Or the people I know always says that. Shit I say that. She cute, he cute. Whatever.
asd2wvacbuw 1 year ago
@asd2wvacbuw so do you all also say: "you cuh onstan wuh i sain?"(can you understand what I am saying?) or, "wuh wunna talkin bout?"(What are you all talking about?) or even "gine on b?"(How are you?) and "da look nasty den!",(That looks really dirty!) "cheese on bread!"(an exclamation which varies according to context), "wuh loss!"(omg), "she ain fuh real?"(she is not being serious?), "she head caan be good"(her mind is not well), "fuh trute?"(is that true?), "part you is?"(where are you?)
bajanteen212 1 year ago 3
@bajanteen212 i am sure he or she doesn't lol but that person has to remember that although they may say "he/she cute" it's not going to be said in the same tone and accent as a bajan would say it
malimal87 1 year ago
@malimal87 Imma girl. But yea that's what I mean. We say stuff kinda similar to that but we don't have that strong accent & we don't say it in the tone or accent. But we do say " he/she cute" & other slang. But yea.
asd2wvacbuw 1 year ago
Stuff like dat.

hmmmmm, I'm Barbadian, 100% born and raised and I wouldn't necessarily have worded that as 'really bad english'. It's our local way of speaking, just cuz its 'broken' like other forms of broken language e.g. creole etc. dosen't mean its 'really bad'. It's uniquley us! She's been groomed to present herself a certain way to the world and has now become detached from the country which she once called home. Another soul lost!
mikestamlo 1 year ago
@mikestamlo I'm Jamaican and we speak Jamaica too...but the majority of Jamaicans see our language as bad English too. I love patwa...dem can gwaan lol. In a sense, the Englishmen succeeded in getting black people (In the Caribbean) to hate themselves, and their culture, and aspire to adopting a "White mentality". As Bob say..."Emancipate yourself from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our mind" A just we now need fi accept our language as a good thing u zeet. So would say i blame her.
makedijaa 1 year ago
@makedijaa jamaica is not a language..lol,that's our country. The language is patois,or as we call patwa.Just addressing what you stated "I'm Jamaican and we speak Jamaica too"
