I assume a lot of material goods/resources came from slavery and colonialism. Technological innovation (the scientific method) had made our lives better. Inequality creates both poverty (=lack of) and wealth. Some people may only want what's best for themselves, but most people aren't psychopaths/corporations. Most people want what's best for their family, friends, nation and some even want what's best for humanity as a whole. Even less about all sentient beings. A lot about their pets though...
