this is one of the schools i'm considering currently. it seems to me that, while other schools claim to be Catholic, it's really just like my so-called Catholic HS--a bubble from the outside world. i had rules out all Catholic colleges for the reason that i saw no reason to prolong my inevitable entry into "the real world." but it seems like at FUS, you get to spend 4 years learning how to be Catholic "in the real world" by actually being Catholic on a daily basis.
It is NOT necessary to have Praise and Worship in a Charismatic way. EvodiusTheophile (from above) actually made a good comment about cliques. Please refer to that. God bless. Pax et Bonum
FUS and all it encompasses will affect each individual differently. It is a UNNIVERSITY not THE CHURCH. Even THE CHURCH is viewed and understood differently by each unique person God has created. Please, try to give FUS and Households some lee-way. Nothing, except God, is perfect in every way. Only God is God. If someone does not find a Household they like, get some of your friends and form your own!
I personally think that the households are a very good system. Princeton actually encourages students to do something virtually identical. Are they "cliquey", well yes...COLLEGE IS cliquey. At all universities you hang out with people in your clubs, frat/sorority, or other social org. I met my wife at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at UCLA...because we were part of the same clique.
I don't recommend it. I'd apply to top rated schools strong in your academic interests in addition to applying here. Only if you don't get in anywhere else should you consider coming. The academics aren't very good and it has no weight with employers or grad schools. I went to UCLA and am finishing an MA in theology with a strong GPA, and I've still been shut out of grad schools due to Franciscans bad (and deserved) reputation.
I find it hard to believe that you are having a tough time getting into a good grad school for your MA in theology BECAUSE of Franciscan. It should be the other way around. Franciscan is known WORLDWIDE for their excellence in Theology. Ever consider why Franciscan boasts of hundreds of international students that go to Franciscan just to get their Theology majors? Its because of their international fame. It is among the top ten catholic universities in the states, and possibly in the world
Hundred's of international students? Known world wide? Where are you getting that information? Because neither is true. Franciscan isn't even known well in the sate of Ohio, for theology or anything else. I knew the small student body pretty well, and there were a couple of people who came from the UK and some visiting priests from Africa...but nowhere near the international appeal that you are describing. It is NOT a top ten "catholic university", where are you getting that info as well?!
An MA from Franciscan is meaningless because the program is not really geared toward doing theology at the graduate level or training students in the skills needed to be competitive for placement in PhD programs. It's commonly known that even Dr. Hahn's son has recently opted to study for a terminal masters at Notre Dame instead of Franciscan because of this fact. The truth is, Franciscan professors think we are dumb for not doing the same, and at this point I can see whey they think so.
Dear Bobbrza, I'll be lifting you up in prayer, hoping for the best for you in your discernment to become a Catholic Priest , God knows we need more good men/Priest.
Franciscan University is a Great University, I'm sure you will be happy to attend.
I had quite a few friends who were household members, but I absolutely hated households themselves.
Largely because I never fit into them myself, I suppose, and also because of the fact that individually nice people turned into an obnoxious mob when grouped together with a household.
Households are cliquey, and very intimidating, and kind of scary... However, a new movement is going on here at Steuby U... getting more into the actual histories behind it... less guitars and drums and showiness and more solemn prayer and reflection.
interesting video. I myself attended FUS less than a year ago. Households were a big part of campus life, but not everyone was involved in a household. I tended to stick with a group with my dorm, and everything worked out all right, even though I wasn't a member of a household. I may have joined one, except I'm very traditional in my prayer and worship.
I hope this wasn't a COM project.....

I feel like so much has changed over the past 2 years...
I mean, households are still going on. I'm still in one (for 2 more weeks), but it seems different than it did. This is the end of my 5th year.
