Mac Neil and Warren both had more volume then Tibbett and I prefer them both to Tibbett but everyone hears differently and Tibbett has many fans, early he did some great singing sure.
This was the first MacNeil recording I heard, back in 1977, when I was 18, a voice student working at our International House of Pancakes on the third shift -- takes me back like nobody's biz:) --
I heard him in 1973 the met in june he sang with tucker in pag. and it was big, like a warren big voice, very big along with tucker, they where great and Corelli did the cav but was having an off night. Mac Neil had a very big voice.
When McNeil was in good form, it was one of the the biggest baritone voices I ever heard in the theater. Only Merrill rivaled him. What a wonderful sound!
Truly Magnificent,, the Great Cornell Macneil in his prime!!!!! Thank you for this post! Every young baritone today should know this voice,,,, for those of us who heard him live in his prime,,, will never forget!!!!!!
Since you did hear him live in his prime can you describe to everyone just what his voice was like? The size, darkness, squillante and so on? And how does it compare to those singing this rep. today?
My teacher did see him live in his prime and he said to me that the voice was overwhelmingly large and couldn't be lost no matter what volume the orchestra would play, even when he sang low notes. Which I find surprising because on a recording it doesn't sound that powerfull and not heavy at all, and it is far from being the darkest verdi baritone voice also, but grand voices must be heard live to really see their size.
It doesn't sound powerful on the recording? Whose voice do you consider darker and heavier than MacNeil. And by "heavy" I don't mean cumbersome. I mean weight of sound.
@MrCafiero I assume your asking me what it was like to hear MacNeil live, I don't know how I missed your comment. What was it like? it was everything,, Big Beautiful Rolling sound, big powerful middle voice, unlimited upper register ring, ping squillo, Legato everywhere,,a big beautiful force of nature! He changed my life! Thanks for the post!!!
REST IN PEACE

Studio recordings really don't do justice to the size of this voice.

Du beau baryton verdi,épais et brillant à la fois,et surtout un timbre exempt d'artifices!
Un très bel aigu, forgé dans un métal pur, sans aucune scorie.Des nuances maitrisées.Incontournable.

Yes, the voice was really big, but the best thing in MacNeil is the quality of his singing.
Thanks for this recording!

Haha I think Shore and Tibbett probably came somewhat close. Warren of course had that wonderful color, but didn't have MacNeil's lower register.

Nah, MacNeil was bigger and heavier than both of them. Tibbett had a great voice, but not nearly the power of MacNeil.

@MrCafiero Maybe Merrill was a rival to MacNeil in terms of size of voice? --- although after the '50s, Cornell had Bob beaten with high notes.
