it's a song about drug addiction "sunset, everything's fire, but I can't get any higher" Also retrospective about his own addictions and friends lost.
@loveorhateme7 I've heard other people say its about his friend dying, but I dont hear any lyrics that support it, just the voicemails. All the lyrics point to it being a song of admission of him being such a womanizer
Not a stalker or anything but because of my job my mind is like a trap for information. Plus, whenever this happened it was a huge bit of news on the band's mailing list.
It's not a love song. I hear a guy singing about how he is very lost, and only uses women to distract him from being blue. The songwriter supposedly wrote this after his friend overdosed on cocaine.
@kiwinemissus: The voice mail starts with Greg Dulli and long time friend, Ted Demme talking about the directions to Demme's new house that he had purchased. Demme had struggled with heavy cocaine use and had gone clean for about a year. However, On Sunday, January 13, 2002, while playing a game of basketball, Demme collapsed and died of a heart attack which may have been related to cocaine later found in his system during an autopsy. So sad how a huge loss can cause great music. :(
It is sad, but that's a part of what makes art- life. It's a heartbreakingly poignant song, but I am sure it has helped many people in some way or another. For me it helps me disconnect when I get too wound up in something.

This song does something to my soul...I guess because Greg Dulli wrote it from his soul about a close and much loved friend!!!
I just absorb it right through to my soul and pray the feeling never leaves me!!! -3

@LittleMissClumbzie : That is the writer (Greg Dulli)'s friends and Mother trying to get in touch with him once the news broke about Demme's death.
