Turkish people seem pretty d*mb. The Ottoman Empire concquered Bulgaria which was torned in three states because of dumb rulers, concquered Byzantium which was crushed in the Fourth Crusade and what else? What else did you do? What did you give to the world? Nothing. You can't possibly compare yourself to Roman Empire, Napoleonic France, the Mongols, Bulgaria and Byzantium at their peaks. Also, modern day Turkey united under Ataturk is a nation-state, not an empire. It is quite stupid to dream of a new Ottoman Empire, or to blame or hail modern day Turkey for Ottoman attrocities or glory in the past.

You could easily argue that under Ottoman rule ethnic and religious minorities (or orthodox/christian majorities in some conquered European land) were tolerated and accepted compared to other empires. Attrocities did happen, just like in every late medieval empire. Constantinopel / Istanbul was a prospering multicultural city and Ottoman culture was rich and educated, although dogmatic with regards to sunni Islam and their interferance with the state.

@esraretin yes the Turks are awesome and I respect them, but the Ottomans were conquering people like most of Europe except not as strong. I don't blame the Turks I blame their leaders. Yes the Ottomans are strong but not as strong as the Europeans, and UK helped Greece in WW2. And by they way I don't think the Austrians would be very happy with the Ottomans after they almost got their capital city captured.

@nemesis962074 That is exactly what I've been preaching... Conquering Mesopotamia, the Caucasus, the Levantine and Maghreb is not the same thing as conquering any place in Europe. The Europeans have always been organised whereas Arabs and other peoples that constitute the population in the Near East has not been and is not organised and most importantly, often quite poor.

They did "good" in Europe, but that's about it. Yes, Europe took colonies, and do you even know what a colony is? It's a place controlled by a governor controlled by a country. Not independent at all.

And a colony has many ways of being controlled, direct control, indirect control etc. But all have in common that a colonies are ALWAYS under their ruling country, they concept of giving a colony self-rule was merely a trick to make people feel independent, if they in any way showed resistance, they were taken down.

But how can you decide whether an empire was successful or not? The Ottoman empire fell together and now remains as small Turkey, are you saying they were successful? At least European nations has gotten more territory than they started with. Such as Prussia (Germany) from the 1700-1900 got over 4x their original size.

No empire conquered half of the world.Mongol empire conquered half of the know world in 13th century, but it is still 22.5% of total land.
British conquered vase lands and countless islands and colonies, but it is still 23% of total land.

I want to go to Turkey, it seams like a nice place. In 1858 the ottomans decriminalised gay people, for that my respect of the ottomans hase gone up a lot. It's a shame you people were so horible to the armenians.
