John wouldn't know to look for a 'planet' to live on at the end, because he doesn't know what a planet is. He only had the postcard of 'Shell Beach' to go on... & so recreated it.
Love the directors cut! A much smarter & more subtly insidious film. Alex Proyas' crowning achievement!
Really great film. Rufus Sewell, Jennifer Connelly, Kiefer Sutherland, William Hurt were great. The 90's had so many overlooked & underrated SCI-FI films - this one, FutureSport, The Time Shifters, Virtuosity, Tha Lawnmower Man, Alien 3, Space Truckers, Strange Days, The Arrival, Mimic, The Apocalypse (1997), Virus, RoboCop 2, Them, Body Snatchers, eXistenZ, Sphere, Judge Dredd, Demolition Man, Anaconda, The Shadow Men etc
The era implies the 30's and 40's, specifically, the 1930's RIGHT BEFORE WWII. It would have been an ideal time to abduct people, with all the chaos and people distracted by the "great war." John Murdock wins in the end of course but, gosh, the ending was still depressing. Sorry but I don't think I could live on a space station the rest of my life, I'd look for a planet.
In all honesty, the year on Earth is irrelevant if they are creating people's thoughts and identities. It could be any year and it could only be stylized in the form of film noir. Just playing devil's advocate, I don't think there is a right or wrong answer.
Also agreed, I wouldn't want to live on a space station for the rest of my life, but I guess my opinion might be swayed by the choice to keep or lose Godlike powers (If it even is possible to leave.)
Yes and no, did they not use the device beneath the city to help them tune? Murdoch may not be strong enough on his own to maintain those powers without any assistance. He is only one man too, not collective hive mind.
The device merely magnified their powers, it did not give it to them. The device was used because they were all dying; The Strangers needed to discover what made humans human, and they needed to find out in a big hurry, so everything had to be altered quickly. That device is useless to any creature without that ability, only a tuner can use it.
If the head stranger was drawing his power from all of them, apparently Murdoch was strong enough to take them all on; the movie strongly implies that Murdoch's humanity, is what made him gain power so quickly. Dr. Shrieber (Kiefer Sutherland) even said it "he's adapting to survive, maybe you found what you were looking for, and now, its going to bite you, in the...." Low odds and all though, I'd still look for a planet.
You already have Keifer and he kinda sucks already. His face is perfect for the role but that hammy acting isn't working. I believe the director cast an unknown in the lead role purposely, but I'm not sure.
That's called bad acting. If you don't like marlon brando movies just because marlon brado is in them then you're thoroughly missing out. Maybe you should just say "i dont like bad actors in big movie roles"
And a majority of major motion pictures have terrible acting, it's just 99% of americans don't care and continuously shell out money to go see them.;\
I was a huge fan of the original cut of Dark City, and I always thought it felt like a couple of episodes the classic Twilight Zone, in that it had a twist in the tale.
I just bought this version and I gotta say, I liked the original cut a lot better. Alexi Proyas made things a little too obvious in this version and some of the conversations don't seem very natural. I will say though my Dad had a much easier time following this cut than he did the original so... maybe the director was trying to address issues some people had following the story of the first.
Anyhow check this verison out and I think you'll agree with me man.
@AkimboJoe That was the reason for Ridley Scott putting the voice-over on 'Blade Runner'. In the end it killed the movie, slowed it down too much. Every now and then a movie is made that challenges us to think. I think most of the general public leaves their brains at home when they go to the movies.
@stardingo747 "SPOILER ALERT!!!"

Y'know, I really think Dr. Schreber's unusual...speech...patterns add to his mystery as a character.

Tuning is a skill that has to do with altering the very fabric of space; Murdock would not lose his powers, regardless of what planet they went to.

One Man > the largest collective.
When we lose our belief in the individual, we will have lost our humanity.

they needed a bigger star in the lead ... ah well ...
a Christian Bale type ..

I like unknown actors. It's less distracting. The trailer for the film was attraction power enough for me.
Any time a big name actor steps in to a role, the character becomes the actor instead the actor becoming the character.
