@importedmusic Even Margaret Thatcher subscribed wholeheartedly to the notion of free movement of goods and services. Consumers should be able to purchase goods whereever they want in the EU at the optimum price. This is one of the fundamental freedoms enshrined in the Treaty.

reduction in the taxes on alcohol and tobacco would put a stop to smuggling and booze cruises, would also increase the total tax revenue and give shop owners more income. reduction of taxes is a win, win situatation

@750triton Not for consumers. The foreign products would still be cheaper for British consumers (even if the taxes were reduced by 25%). See the analysis in the December 2008 edition of the Economist.

@1957Rotu. I have worked in over forty countries and have lived in five European cities. I now spend nearly seven months a year from Spain commuting to destinations throughout the EEC. As a result I know how busy and booked the Eurostar can be. Sadly you have little experience of travel. You live on an island and like Alcatraz it is surrounded by water making it expensive and difficult for you to leave !

@lopzilla I've been on Eurostar at times of peak travel. Once used it to travel back from Paris to London the day after one of the Rugby World Cup matches in Paris. No difficulty in securing a booking. Also travelled in Summer and successfully made my booking a few days in advance.

So please, lopzilla, do not let the facts get in the way of your twisted logic.

The EU is over regulated, undemocratic, corrupt, profligate and hugely damaging to commerce, international trade, Justice or progress.

The EU's ONLY achievement is its own failure merely destroying fisheries, food output a failed airo industry, Gallilleo project a joke, net importer of food, huge export of jobs and over priced good - The EU is an outdated concept & a failure JUST WAIT!

@wtfjaftw Hi, sadly how right you are - 234 vs. 23 British MPs vote against accepting EU law on the nod but then do NOTHING for the British peoples & accept an EU FUDGE to settle the con.

As for immigrants turning on us. I understand some 40% of ALL Murder charges in the last year quantified were non British born individuals. The EU has forced a huge body of its social rejects on us from France, Poland and elsewhere in the EU - I have no problems with immigrants of any type when WE control it.

Also, look at the education standards of todays youth leaving our schools and universities, the majority of them wouldn't be able to understand Hannan's speech let alone spell some of the long words in it. Who is it hurting if a guy pays £60 quid on petrol to go on a booze cruise to France, 80% of that going towards tax of course, and comes home with an extra bottle of wine or two.

If the Government spent less money on policing British Citizens trying to get alcohol/tobacco/other goods at a reasonable price from mainland Europe into the UK they would have enough of the taxpayers money left over to not charge ridiculous taxes on these goods made within the UK.
