Timbuktu was no Athens, Alexandria, Florence or whatever. Timbuktu is famous for its mud-built Islamic schools and mosques which originated (together with knowledge of Quran and Arabic ) through invasions from the Moors (Amazigh people and Arabs) It was also famous for its huge slave market. West African rulers would start wars, obtain prisoners, transport them via middlemen to owners of "storage" areas and then sell them to White traders, who were often Jewish. I am Korean. I feel very sorry for Africans that were enslaved by Europeans. But then, that is exactly what happens to you if you are weak. When the Europeans came over to East Asia, we kicked their European asses so bad they never came back. Chinese people captured, enslaved, tortured and killed Europeans as they came to their land. That is why China, Korea and Japan stayed independent and free from European colonisation. Sometimes, you just have to kick ass. If you lose, you become a slave.

I'm tired of reading that Africans sold each other into slavery, during wars they did take slaves but they were not treated like we were in America..my ancestors were 'ripped' from loved ones, kidnapped. Africans did not treat their slaves badly. Of course a slave is a slave, we are talking about treatment. Did Africans beat their slaves, worked them from sunup to sundown?
