One of those great, kick-ass, get-up-on-your-feet, put a smile on your face songs that automatically make you wanna party right from the first note. And a great performance by one of the best rock bands ever. God, when I look around at today's pitiful, lame-ass music scene ( R U listening Bieber ?? ) I am so glad I was there for the '60s - '80s. Amen......
try and get most bands these days to play their studio songs live like this............ the Cards rocked.... professional and true to their fans by bringing the music they love live to their ears and eyes............ RIP Ben
I wish I could go back in time to the 1980's so I could watch The Cars live. I'm 13 and this is my favorite band. The first song I heard was "Magic" and I loved it so much. I cant stop listening to them now
@ricocasekfan Congratulations, almost same thing here! Only I'm almost 17 and I first heard The Cars about when I was born, I remember being very very very young and hearing Heartbeat City, it's my favorite Cars' song. Plus my dad always liked only that album, so it's also my favorite album by the Cars, definitely. Also I always knew what Ric Ocasek looked like, but never new other band members and I never new someone sang some songs besides Ric... :)
The Cars always had a great live sound. I was at this concert at the great Summit, which is now a church.
I was impressed with how clean the sound was. you cold hear every subtle synth line and harmony vocals
On a side note, I can't believe how many concerts from the Summit have made it to YouTube, from the mid-seventies Eagles, America & now the fabulous Cars.
Who opened the show? I saw the Austin gig on what I assume was this tour, with Nick Lowe opening. At the time, the Cars had a rep (from what I'd heard) as being really stiff and sterile live, but Lowe was a guaranteed butt-kicker onstage, so it seemed like a win-win situation. In reality, Nick was dullsville and the Cars "drove it home" with a spirited live set! Couldn't complain!
@1nceBitten2wiceShy >>>who opened??? --- this Houston show in the old Summit(now a church) was opened by Wang Chung.......... I actually still have the ticket stub from this concert......."The Summit" was a great place back in the day ,but now it's occupied by John Olsten the TV evangilest................
I need one of Ric's jackets....Lol. (Halloween costume, ftw. Have to look good for my school so they can continue to stare at me funny. XD) Got the glasses...I'm ACTUALLY debating getting two little black studs in my ears just to be Ric...Lol. But I'm a pain-o-phobic. Oh well. Lol. Gawsh. He's goooood. o_o *stares at Ric, re-plays the vid*
That little dive bomb string bend Elliot does @ 2:01 to kick off his solo is magic!
Gotta say it again...he has all the skills & the natural ability to know when to trigger my guitar riff "shiver button" without ever overplaying!! LUV the CARS!!
The Cars were known for doing bad recreations of their albums since they were so heavily produced from "The Cars" album to "Heartbeat City." The one exception was "Door to Door" since Ric Ocasek took control of the last album as producer, and it did badly compared to the rest of the albums. In any case, they sound unusually good here as the music only slightly off and the lyrics are very close to the original. At about 2:52 the "You Might Think" chorus is a little off - I think it may be live.
It IS live and it is a great live performance! Instrumentals and harmonies are exceptional for a live performance. Just purchased an old VHS tape of this concert and it was well worth the price!
Hi, you `re right! The Cars were an awesome band! They sounded live maybe better than in studio. Is it possible to get this concert (in Houston) on DVD?
Thanks, and I WISH it were available on DVD, but alas, it is not! I found my tape on amazon and i know that there are a few old rental tapes still available for around $20 and one"new" for $85.
Lucky!!! I never saw them live. At the time when I was in HS I was more of a metal head. Now I'm rediscovering all the 80's bands I didn't like at the time. Hindsight is... well, you know
This what killed the cars, sounds pretty good now, but after candyo and the cars albums, this junk came and killed a great band into a techno disco dance thing. A shame, I asked Benn Orr about these songs and said it was a sad reminder of industry dictating music.
Notice how drummer David Robinson frequently wears headphones? He is listening to the "click track" so he can always follow the sequncers tha Greg Hawkes has programmed. that way he's always in sync with the sequqncers and the rest of the band just have to follow his drumming. Result - perfect timing. Great band wish this video was on DVD!
100% right -this concert was way better than the German concert on their special DVD and should've been converted from VHS to DVD. IMHO it is The Cars at their peak - magnificent
in my opinion this is the best song that he sings. i know if i say ONLY song he sings well ppl will start yellin over here. and teh new cars do suck without him.
If he could just be a little bit more enthused about the show, that would be cool. Might as well grab a chair and sit down and play. Give this guy a red bull or something.
No way, its live baby! They rocked, I saw them on this tour, it was a great show, they hardly ever spoke to the crowd, they played only about 1hour 15 minutes, and took about 2 minutes between songs to setup.
