  • I was there! Saw them 2 nights in a row!! Houston...1984:-) wow...

  • @momof4hs Woooow I envy you !!!!!!

  • THAT'S REAL MUSIC! EVEN MY 10 YEAR OLD KID CAN NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE!

80'S MUSIC JUST TO INSPIRE YOU TO GO AHEAD!!, MOSTLY OF TODAYS MUSIC MAKES PEOPLE A MESS!! PLEASE MEDIA!!! STOP GIVING PROMOTION TO CRAP MUSIC!!

  • not only did they have real bands back in the 80s, they also had real women.

  • Elliot absotively rocks. He's tied to that guitar, to every lead note that he plays. Beyond category.

  • Since The Cars are back together again I can prove that one.

  • OK, here's my opinion. The Cars version blows Weezer away. However, let's not get nuts about this stuff.

  • @ShadowDemon3663 the weezer one will never come close to being better than the cars

  • Comment removed

  • @ShadowDemon3663 fuck you

  • Back when the cars were BEATLE!!!!

  • who here came looking for this song because they heard it on the CARS the movie trailer XD

  • @Ushionai They should have had The Cars sing it. After all it is the movie Cars 22

  • @Ushionai I meant Cars 2

  • That guitar sound on the lead is awesome.

  • I kinda miss the 80's and the clean look. The 90's grunge was not for me. I hope it comes around again.

  • great show

  • The Cars were the Beatles of the 80's!

  • Some white Texans getting the fuck down..cool!

  • Excellent chemistry between audience and performers. Everyone into it totally! CARS take a BOW!! way to go Ocasek and drivetrain!

  • Catholics do not follow the teachins of Jesus, and his other half, God.

  • I love the CARS.

  • @elisamia84 The cars love you too.

  • Is it just me or does the lead singer look like the alien from American Dad? Awesome band and music though, I love em.

  • One of those great, kick-ass, get-up-on-your-feet, put a smile on your face songs that automatically make you wanna party right from the first note. And a great performance by one of the best rock bands ever. God, when I look around at today's pitiful, lame-ass music scene ( R U listening Bieber ?? ) I am so glad I was there for the '60s - '80s. Amen......

  • I love this band.

  • The Cars have reunited and have a new album coming out soon.

  • That snare drum sounds awesome.. love that tone

  • wow, what regrets i never seen these guy's live...grew up on these great songs

  • NIIIICE!!!!

  • Awesome!

  • right now i'm wearing EXACTLY the same clothes as what Ric is wearing in this vid !

  • Benjamin always made me weak in the knees

  • try and get most bands these days to play their studio songs live like this............ the Cards rocked.... professional and true to their fans by bringing the music they love live to their ears and eyes............ RIP Ben

  • this is great

  • I wish I could go back in time to the 1980's so I could watch The Cars live. I'm 13 and this is my favorite band. The first song I heard was "Magic" and I loved it so much. I cant stop listening to them now

  • @ricocasekfan Congratulations, almost same thing here! Only I'm almost 17 and I first heard The Cars about when I was born, I remember being very very very young and hearing Heartbeat City, it's my favorite Cars' song. Plus my dad always liked only that album, so it's also my favorite album by the Cars, definitely. Also I always knew what Ric Ocasek looked like, but never new other band members and I never new someone sang some songs besides Ric... :)

  • Yeah, I like the Beatles stuff on ukelele Greg does. Nice.

  • greg hawkes is the man check his youtube vids haha hes awesome

  • that would be nice if they released this out on DVD as a tribute to Ben Orr and the pancreatic cancer foundation!!

  • supersport22

M - yes..., judging by your reaction - Howard Stern - is more terrible than world nuclear threat ;-)

Video is - the great live version

  • The Cars always had a great live sound. I was at this concert at the great Summit, which is now a church.

I was impressed with how clean the sound was. you cold hear every subtle synth line and harmony vocals

On a side note, I can't believe how many concerts from the Summit have made it to YouTube, from the mid-seventies Eagles, America & now the fabulous Cars.

  • @kirbygene

Who opened the show? I saw the Austin gig on what I assume was this tour, with Nick Lowe opening. At the time, the Cars had a rep (from what I'd heard) as being really stiff and sterile live, but Lowe was a guaranteed butt-kicker onstage, so it seemed like a win-win situation. In reality, Nick was dullsville and the Cars "drove it home" with a spirited live set! Couldn't complain!

    - 1b2s

  • @1nceBitten2wiceShy >>>who opened??? --- this Houston show in the old Summit(now a church) was opened by Wang Chung.......... I actually still have the ticket stub from this concert......."The Summit" was a great place back in the day ,but now it's occupied by John Olsten the TV evangilest................

  • he looks like Howard Stern

  • This is really good live.

  • 80's BEATLES !!!

  • god do I miss the 80's. Look at the look of the crowd!

  • elliott easton rocks!! so does leftys!

  • agreed - elliot is one of the very best

  • This was a stellar live performance. Everyone did their part perfectly without a hitch. Great band, great sound, great song.

  • Esto es un Cadillac.

  • los automoviles--buen grupo

  • You go Cars fans!

  • 80's girls :)

  • I wish they invented the time machine!!! lol

  • wow...I was at this concert up in the cheap seats...great songs but they were boring to watch...very mechanical and barely moved.

  • Comment removed

  • all i wanted was Ben back then.....seriously.

These guys were SO Great 'live'!!

  • Ben Stiller from Zoolander????

  • well I see the comparison. It's Rick Emo. Rick Ocasek.

  • yeah man the 80's!!

  • Somethin you might think about: I'm not enjoyin this in the 80's, I'm enjoyin it now.

  • veddy cool fo sho

  • I need one of Ric's jackets....Lol. (Halloween costume, ftw. Have to look good for my school so they can continue to stare at me funny. XD) Got the glasses...I'm ACTUALLY debating getting two little black studs in my ears just to be Ric...Lol. But I'm a pain-o-phobic. Oh well. Lol. Gawsh. He's goooood. o_o *stares at Ric, re-plays the vid*

  • The Cars were BEATLE !!!!

  • Good Luck Chuck2007 soundtrack...

  • Thanks for putting this set of live performances up, GREAT BAND!!!

  • These guys are insane live. WOW.

  • yeaa cooler than the albums!

  • @mattmckeown That is so sad. They are insane. How unpleasant, in the lon runnin, not to be sane.

  • That little dive bomb string bend Elliot does @ 2:01 to kick off his solo is magic!

Gotta say it again...he has all the skills & the natural ability to know when to trigger my guitar riff "shiver button" without ever overplaying!! LUV the CARS!!

  • Man, Iwish I was around when they where.

    Fucking 20th cen.

  • The Cars were known for doing bad recreations of their albums since they were so heavily produced from "The Cars" album to "Heartbeat City." The one exception was "Door to Door" since Ric Ocasek took control of the last album as producer, and it did badly compared to the rest of the albums. In any case, they sound unusually good here as the music only slightly off and the lyrics are very close to the original. At about 2:52 the "You Might Think" chorus is a little off - I think it may be live.

  • It IS live and it is a great live performance! Instrumentals and harmonies are exceptional for a live performance. Just purchased an old VHS tape of this concert and it was well worth the price!

  • Hi, you `re right! The Cars were an awesome band! They sounded live maybe better than in studio. Is it possible to get this concert (in Houston) on DVD?

  • Thanks, and I WISH it were available on DVD, but alas, it is not! I found my tape on amazon and i know that there are a few old rental tapes still available for around $20 and one"new" for $85.

  • I WAS THERE !!!

  • Lucky!!! I never saw them live. At the time when I was in HS I was more of a metal head. Now I'm rediscovering all the 80's bands I didn't like at the time. Hindsight is... well, you know

  • The backing vocals are 100% pre-recorded in this performance.

  • No, there really was a time when vocals were not sync'd believe it or not.... There are quite a few band that can actually sing backing vocals live.

  • This is a good performance, but I suspect that the backing vocals were prerecorded. They sound exactly like the record.

  • Luv Elliot Easton's playing... in particular his cool right-to-the-point solo..he never over plays!

  • up there witj freddy mercury no doubt!

  • they dont make music like before

  • This what killed the cars, sounds pretty good now, but after candyo and the cars albums, this junk came and killed a great band into a techno disco dance thing. A shame, I asked Benn Orr about these songs and said it was a sad reminder of industry dictating music.

  • lol they look like such freaks but great music :)

  • Ric wears sunglasses at night...LOL.....somebody get the guy a large cheeseburger!! He looks like a cadaver!

Great musician, though and a hugely under rated group!

  • Anyone remember Ric Ocasek in the film Hairspray playing that beatnik? He was funny. Good song by the way.

  • Such a rush from this song! What a great band.

  • I wish I was there...

  • This is an amazing song.

  • Maybe I am crazy, but I am crazy about you...I love you!!!!!!

  • Lookit Ric-- HahaaaHA! Such a style god. These guys were the best at everything 80s.

  • Ahhh, frenzied white people... god love 'em

  • It is criminal that this fantastic concert isnt on DVD. still one of my favorite bands after 30 years.

  • @mpres47

    i'm agree with you

  • @mpres47 it's on DVD, the Cars: UNLOCKED

  • @mpres47 the cars-unlocked. it has this same concert but with different camera views and clips from their rehersal

  • @mpres47 Ive been saying this for years. How hard is it to put this show out with all of their vids on it too????

  • @mpres47 it is on DVD

  • Very talented band, all mmembers. It was such great music. The current music isn`t worth a damn.

  • "Hello Again" was obviously the first song at this show. It was at The Summit,on September 12, 1984

  • I suspect there were some studio overdubs in that recording but who knows and who cares. Excelent song

  • coool!

  • wow...this sounds so good..found this live version today and love it..cool deal mode101wpb^^

  • top band,

  • I agree with other comments, they are note perfect!! That's remarkable, its not a simple song when you really listen to it. Wow!

  • there good

  • How can I get this on DVD? Awesome show!

  • live they played it in perfect tempo very talented band thats why I love them!!!!!!!!

  • The reason they has such prefect timing...

Notice how drummer David Robinson frequently wears headphones? He is listening to the "click track" so he can always follow the sequncers tha Greg Hawkes has programmed. that way he's always in sync with the sequqncers and the rest of the band just have to follow his drumming. Result - perfect timing. Great band wish this video was on DVD!

  • 100% right -this concert was way better than the German concert on their special DVD and should've been converted from VHS to DVD. IMHO it is The Cars at their peak - magnificent

  • one of their best tunes & a landmark MTV video

    a classic on mtv now..

  • wish i was alive back then to see them :(

  • COMPLETELY MAN!!!

  • yeah :D

  • hehe :D

  • yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

  • woooooooooo! xD

  • Roarrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:D> XD

  • MEOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:) O.o

  • American Beatles but better than them

    no offense :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D :)

  • RIC AND BEN ARE AWESOME!

  • Fucking awsome!

  • you mean greg hawks your right

  • its with an E buddy

  • yahhh..! im crazyy..

  • greg hawkes

  • the cars were known for not being overly animated

in there minds they chose not to patronize the crowd with bull like "Oh we love you"

    And all that rubbish

Nirvana and groups like that would follow suit

  • yeah we know, we saw the interview

  • in my opinion this is the best song that he sings. i know if i say ONLY song he sings well ppl will start yellin over here. and teh new cars do suck without him.

  • you might think it's hysterical

but I know when you're weak

you think you're in the movies

    and everything's so deep

but I think that you're wild

when you flash that fragile smile

  • If he could just be a little bit more enthused about the show, that would be cool. Might as well grab a chair and sit down and play. Give this guy a red bull or something.

  • don't say such thing about The Great Ric Ocasek :P

  • He just sings seriously, and I kinda like that

  • Sure is, I love it! :)

  • Nice hair.

  • DUH it's live -_- The New Cars Suck. Without Ric Ocasek.

  • He is, didn't ya know? -_- I love his 1982(Beatitude) and 1986(This Side Of Paradise) If to take Ben, I only like Stay The Night...

  • We miss you Ben.

  • Is this Playback? Very close to the studio version ...

  • No way, its live baby! They rocked, I saw them on this tour, it was a great show, they hardly ever spoke to the crowd, they played only about 1hour 15 minutes, and took about 2 minutes between songs to setup. I don't know if they ever cared where they were at half the time, I saw them in Richmond, VA and I think they thought they were somewhere else. But they still sounded great no matter what.

  • Oh.

    We got a fan here.

If that's really live -as I'm inclined to believe you-it's stupenduously well done.

    (Hope I spelled that correctly)

  • Hey, what can I say, they were very real musicians, Ric and crew were very technical about it all. They rarely, and I mean rarely, deviated from a songs sheet music as written. They did very few improv's on their own music. I wish Ric would get his head out of arse and get back out there with the remaining boys. The New Cars are just not the deal for me.

  • the backing vocals sound very much like they're off tape - live vocals just don't sound like that! the rest sounds live

  • I think you're right. The drummer is wearing headphones in this one, but in other videos from Houston he's not, which indicates he's syncing up to something. During the breakdown you can hear him keeping the tempo on the hat. It doesn't matter, they were a great band. Benjamin Orr was one of the coolest dudes ever.

  • Sure do, without Ric Ocasek

  • can someone tell me what happend to the cars i hate those wanna be new cars they suck

  • Well, they broke up in '88 I think and Ben Orr passed away in 2000. Ric is doing solo works and producing, I believe.

  • you might think your wild

  • Ric Ocasek IS the best

  • this is a incredible live version as good as the music-vid...except where is the doll model...she was missing in action..this band is very underated...thanks for posting.

  • ONE time I was at a concert that got so WILD that the bass guitar player actually got impaled by a human foot!

  • RIC OCASEK IS INCREDIBLE!!!!

  • I like how Ben and Elliot share a mic like the Beatles always did. The Cars rock!!! We miss you Ben!

  • i meant Ric Ocasek in the photo ;)

  • pause at 1:35 - nice photo ;)

  • i love this song

  • "MTV needs to play these oldie videos"

MTV needs to play videos, period.

  • Excellent! Turn back the clock ready:)

  • AWESOME

  • One of best songs of all-time.Live version is also great.

  • Agreed. First time I heard it was in the early 2000s. Never heard of the cars in China.

  • They are a great group and their animated video to this got them the MTV Video of that Year. MTV needs to play these oldie videos. They were great.

  • where is this available - eg on DVD from anywhere? very cool

  • Dang! I was born that year (84) it doesn't look as old as I expected it to be.
