You are amazing man! Very nice set of vids. Wondering if you can do a tutorial on the song Cathedral from Van Halen's Diver Down album? I'd really like to learn that. Thanks!
It's a shame when a professional guitarist gets negative comments in any manner on what he is teaching, for free and on his own time. I bet some of you would criticize Eddie himself if he did his own tutorial and it wasn't exactly like the studio version on the CD. Thanks for the lesson Pete, your vid is what I am using to learn this. Much appreciation.
i would also like to suggest that Peter erases both my last message AND fucharab's negativity as this is not what I would like to see on the comments page of a great tutorial, I dont like it when people focus on the negative, I wish I wouldn't have given into my pride and commented back, I apologize Peter :(
The best tuition i've ever seen anyone doing for this Pete. Also your version sounds exactly like Eddie's original, impossible to tell the difference, great stuff, inspiring.
When I tremolo pick I tense up, but i can tremolo pick 21 notes a second but i get tired very quickly when i do it that way. I heard that was actually not the way to do it so I tried doing it the Eddie does it. I don't ever get tired but i can only play about 14 notes a second that way. is tensing up while tremolo picking really as bad as people say?
great videos man I love watching your videos cause they give alot of help, most people dont even say the fret number or the string they just play it and expect us to know, but yea you have really great videos and your a big help to me so thanks
Amazing! I was at that live where you played with Chris Cornell as well. The I enjoyed Dave Mathew Band. Best live concert in my life! Thank you for sharing your extremely wide knowledge with people that are just guitar lovers
Thanks for sharing the knowledge you've worked so hard for. You da best. You play this piece very well. To me it sounds like Sinasl1 Van Halen. Maybe you're Eddie's brother er sumthin'. :) Maybe when Eddie retires you can take his place.
Pete, first off, thanks a ton for the time you've put in here... very unselfish of you. It's obvious you love what you do. QUESTION: how often do you practice? I've been playing for 22 years and I practice every free moment I get. It's just something I enjoy so much. Sometimes I think I need guitar rehab when I'm ignoring my family to learn new licks. Anyway, much thanks.
great video, wish the quality was a little better though :( as a side note @ 5:06 you say one thing and do another and the notes sound correct but you say 3rd string 2nd fret and instead you play 3rd fret 2nd string - made me laugh - the notes you play are definitely right however, perhaps another annotation is in order? cheers
@satriani32 yeah i did this a few years back, I'm more adept at making vids now. But it's a bitch to explain a whole solo like this note for note, detailing every fret number and string of every note played.... there's bound to be a few errors, I wasn't getting paid for my time or anything, and no one was there to edit, just me and a mac with a built in camera, ya know? So it is what it is.
Hey Pete you fuckin rule man. I had no idea you were with one of my favorite bands (SoundGarden) would of been awsome if a few weeks back you would of showed up with them during their performance on the Conan O' Brian Show. I just wanted to stop by and make a quick request. If you ever have time, can you give us more Van Halen tutorials?
@sinasl1 yup i know what you mean about details, there's only so much you can describe without cherry lane :) and every transcription of this is slightly different anyways, but i really enjoyed your videos not only for how thorough the content is but also for how you teach, you have a very natural and fun approach and hands down the most comprehensive and detailed video on this song that i have ever seen, and thanks for the response, i feel honored :) you are very skilled player, happy holidays
@satriani32 I hate guys like youtube user 'satriani32.' You have to always throw in an insult and make it sound like you are complimenting the guy. So you 'wish the quality was better?' I WISH you would pay this guy some cash or say THANK YOU for giving your stupid ass a free lesson. Oh yeah....it 'made you laugh' when he said 3rd string 2nd fret and instead played 3rd fret 2nd string?' God youtube is so full of fucking douche bags. I bet you were one of the 7 who hit 'dislike.' Why r u here?
@fucharabs You bet I was one of the 7 who hot dislike, wow! Thats a confident statement. Im going to say that before you go any further, you just joined youtube, what, all of 2 weeks ago, and you are already insulting people. Please don't, don't create bad vibes, calling people douchbags, why are you on youtube, hmm? Why all this pent up anger for a complete stranger? To clarify so you understand I did not hit dislike I hit like, this is the hands down best lesson on Eruption that I ever seen
It's taken me a month, but I've finnaly 'bout got it. (And I've been playing for years!) I think this is the hardest 'note by note' lead I've ever learned. Thank you for all the time you've put into disecting this lead and making these videos, man. I would have never learned to play this the right way without you.
dude... alright ur insanely effin good at guitar i gotta say lol... and wow... ive never had lessons and ive always looked at a song like this to be hard... ive taught myself for about a year now.. and i can play like the first half of the song clean... i owe that shit to u lol... honestly.. im amazed i can play it.. but lookin up the tabs did really help all that well.. like how u explained the picking and shit.. thanks alot dude
amazing lesson mate, my eruption is actually 100 times better after watching these videos, i used to skip out alot of the details which you have have explained.
Dude... awesome. Very easy to follow...after one time through... I nearly have the whole thing... Love it... any more lessons by you anywhere? You have made learning this pretty easy... I had a lot of it already but you disected the details to a fairthywell. Nice lesson and very functional. Thanks bro... jam on.
Hey man thanks a lot for takingyour time in making these awesome vids the have helped me a lot! I have just a question, How many times do you hit each note on the tremolo piocking part??
Thanls a lot and hope you can answer this question...
helo there i wud just like 2 say i realy apriciate the fact that you took your own time 2 show us all this if it wasnt for people like yourself i would not be able to progress in my guitar playing so thanks loads for that .I think you are really tallented musician and you are a great teacher many thanks sinas1 excellent eruption cover .andy . AWESOME LESSON PETE!! I can see you really pay attention to detail! I'm almost done w/ your lessons. Just gotta get it up to speed! The only way to do that is play it a million times!!Driving my wife crazy!!! It's worth it though!! THANKS for the lesson!!
Yeah really man...He must be a down to Earth dude given his success to take the time to do this for us hackers...no offense to anyone that's not a hack, but I am. Working on it though. Thanks a lot for taking the time to do this. I always wanted to work on eruption, but I sure as hell couldn't figure it out myself and who knows what kinda crappy tabs are out there. Kick ass playing as well as a lesson. Thanks Pete.
Hey Pete wow... I was hoping you`d catch that. I wanted to tell you you were missing those notes, but you caught it . I just want to say that you really are a regular guy, being who you are, and still teaching on here. I`m sure alot of people on here don`t know that your a real rock star, playing with Chris Cornell, and don`t have to do this... but thanks for taking the time. We appreciate it man.
sinasl1 i just wanted an experts opinion. whats your opinion on the line 6 spider valve 212 tube amp? i was thinking about getting it.. its 500$ on musicians friend.
you were the guy who were playing with Chris Cornell in lisbon-portugal right???is funny that im taking here some corrections with eruption and i just realize that i saw u some months ago(5) playing life, was a great concert man.
to redslownight oh yeah im 8 months old i just stopped breast feeding and i have been playing guitar for a couple hours and just learned this song by ear yeah it was pretty easy. (sarcasm)
Great lesson! Not all good guitar players can explain how to do what they're doing. Do you have all 4 lessons on a DVD or CD? What other lessons do you have?
Excellent playin! Great tone also. Nice and clean. Wish I saw this vid when I learned it lol. Woulda saved me alot of time and I know now that I have to re-learn a few parts lol. Always good to see someone with well above average skills making great teaching vids.
i dont know EVH never moves his index and thumb when playing, need to work on that dude! and for all of you shred fast players never move their fingers on the picking hand, its all about the wrist.
around 3:32 he's playing e dorian starting on the d string, 11th fret c#. runs up that "box" and then descends with a sequence of 4down/up three pattern...ends on the b string with a bend up from d to e...just a quick analysis...
at first the hammeron patterns around the end confused the hell out of me and the notes arranged in that order didn't make any sense, but i got it now and I'm practicing fast. thanks these helped allot =p
even though you say all the steps in your video, tabs under more info would be extremely helpfull. dont have to be complex tabs, just some numbers and at what time in the video your playing them. like the whole pull off sequence was a rewind/play session of like 10 minutes for me lol.
hey man thanks for the eruption lesson. hey on part 4 when you are eplaining alternate picking... you let this lick rip, it was quite fast, after you are describing loosening up your arm. can you post a lesson on that? if you have time
Great lesson!!! Only one question so far: what is the exact lick you suggest we practice right before the super fast segment? 17(4th str)--drop-drop--14(4th str)-drop--0(6th str)--drop--12(1st)15(2nd)bend?????
And with any cover, getting the feel/vibe is key. That's why some note perfect versions are still just "meh".
And that is why the vast majority of covers on YT stink. Be they Vai, VH, ACDC or whatever. And it is always clear if they guy playing is influenced by the artist or whether he is just attempting a popular solo.
i know what you mean. i pretty much copy angus youngs style so whenever i cover him at anything i sound very similar if i have the right tone. i put so much work into doing everything he does the same. i do the same with any srv i happen to cover. but everything else i just whizz through the notes and dont throw in any rakes or anything like that.
When you hear "it's in the fingers" - this is what is meant. Attack, vibrato, the way notes are played. I sound like Vh as he is my biggest influence and I copped his style. This guy clearly does too.
There are countless renditions on YT. Some good. But even they aren't right because they lack the vibe and feel. Vai is a monster but he couldn't play Eruption as closely as this guy as his way of playing is so different to EVH.
That sloppy bend that you're talking about is something that Eddie wanted to redo. I read an interview with him in GW where he said that he wasn't happy with it, but they only did one take of it so thats how it ended up.
all 5 lessons are excellent dude!!! Just one thing I have not been able to pick up.... Where is the bend right before the tremelo picking starts????? strings? frets?
relax and pick lightly.... use a metronome and run scales etc. to get your pick chops together as well... I recommend the Paul Gilbert "Intense Rock" instructional video to get your alternate picking really happening
You are amazing man! Very nice set of vids. Wondering if you can do a tutorial on the song Cathedral from Van Halen's Diver Down album? I'd really like to learn that. Thanks!

gunsnroseswttj 2 years ago
at first the hammeron patterns around the end confused the hell out of me and the notes arranged in that order didn't make any sense, but i got it now and I'm practicing fast. thanks these helped allot =p

sick tutorials!
but if i could suggest something..
even though you say all the steps in your video, tabs under more info would be extremely helpfull. dont have to be complex tabs, just some numbers and at what time in the video your playing them. like the whole pull off sequence was a rewind/play session of like 10 minutes for me lol.

He does doesn't he? I like it. I could listen to him talk all day. He should go into radio and sooth our minds with relaxing stories.

hey man thanks for the eruption lesson. hey on part 4 when you are eplaining alternate picking... you let this lick rip, it was quite fast, after you are describing loosening up your arm. can you post a lesson on that? if you have time

And it is always clear if they guy playing is influenced by the artist or whether he is just attempting a popular solo.
nemesisrogue 3 years ago
i know what you mean. i pretty much copy angus youngs style so whenever i cover him at anything i sound very similar if i have the right tone. i put so much work into doing everything he does the same. i do the same with any srv i happen to cover. but everything else i just whizz through the notes and dont throw in any rakes or anything like that.
dbikeguy 3 years ago
When you hear "it's in the fingers" - this is what is meant. Attack, vibrato, the way notes are played. I sound like Vh as he is my biggest influence and I copped his style. This guy clearly does too.
There are countless renditions on YT. Some good. But even they aren't right because they lack the vibe and feel. Vai is a monster but he couldn't play Eruption as closely as this guy as his way of playing is so different to EVH.

ii love the little riff at 3:31

hey show us how to play those little improvised licks there awesome
blurpy123 3 years ago
That sloppy bend that you're talking about is something that Eddie wanted to redo. I read an interview with him in GW where he said that he wasn't happy with it, but they only did one take of it so thats how it ended up.

Thanks man !!! Very helpful and cool !!! Obrigado !!! Finalmente vou conseguir tocar essa musica

The cool licks you improvise(?) when explaining the tremelo picking technique, could you please learn us that too? ;)

joebag2319 3 years ago
yeah, that's really amazing...can you pls tell me how did you practice tremolo picking ? on what should I concentrate when picking that fast etc.
bronyaur123 3 years ago
relax and pick lightly.... use a metronome and run scales etc. to get your pick chops together as well... I recommend the Paul Gilbert "Intense Rock" instructional video to get your alternate picking really happening
sinasl1 3 years ago
also use jazz picks, they help alot too
