Oh my goodness, this looks seriously good! Going straight onto my Christmas wish list. I LOVE the book and the 1998 version, but I didn't know much about this adaptation at all.
Jane Seymour looks so young and so gorgeous here. . . and Eugene is so cute - in a Victorian kind of way. And Lizzie looks just how I imagined her to look in the book!
@Karen2L The first one I saw was the 98 and I thought it one of the BBC's best. Saw this one recently and while I cannot call it uniformly better, it certainly has points.
I thought the cast of the '98 one was quite exceptional but I was surprised by Nicholas Jones' portrayal of Eugene surpassing, in some respects, that of Paul McGann in the later version-whose performance I had considered one of the highlights of the series.
As always one wishes the production values had been equal.
Thank you for this video. Some people have a knack to not only match a good song with just the right movie and also take a lot of trouble to attach the appropriate song lyrics to a particular movie scene. I did not like this song before as I found it too slow. But you have brought out the meaning of this song beautifully with this movie. Thank you for your good work.
I own the Keely Hawkes one and love it. I like Stephen Macintosh in the role; he's younger and cuter looking; so I am a little prejudice. I can vouch to say the acting is superb! However, I would like to see this version, too. I think I like the actor playing Eugene in this one better. His performance looks to be very fine and subtle. I love Jane Seymour, also. It looks like a good production.
I LOVED this series when it aired on PBS in 1978. With such distinctive actors as Leo McKern, John McEnery, Jack Wild, Jane Seymour and Leslie Dunlop, and its lack of over-dignified self-consciousness (an off-putting quality afflicting too many more recent period dramas - even of pot-boilin' Dickens' novels), IMO 1976 was MUCH superior to the 1998.
1976 has not been released in the U.S. AFAIK, but I have fresh hope it will be eventually. In the meantime I can enjoy this video. Thank you!

Does the 1976 version have Fledgeby? I saw the 1998 one and it was okay, but they cut half of Jenny Wren's lines, and they left out Fledgeby.

STILL not out in Region 1. Criminal! I saw this when it was originally aired and liked it much better than the newer version.
